Hi guys,
as most of you have seen by my earlier posts, I'm quite new to H3. I still struggle often with the game, but I enjoy playing it and I guess that's what counts ;)
While playing during the weekend, I thought that maybe some people would be interested in reading how a newbie approaches scenarios in H3... so I picked a scenario that didnt sound too complex and tried to write down what happened during the mission. It turned out to be quite satisfactory (my first succesful scenario I think).
If any of you would be interested, I would appreciate suggestions how to better approach the situations I faced during the mission.
I zipped up three saves (A, B, C) that are mentioned in the aar, in case anyone would like to look at the scenario.
I hope you guys enjoy the aar, once I figure out how to make screenshots in h3 (for mac) I'll put up some screenshots, too.
Enjoy!
Air Lane Raiders – After Action Report (Russian Side)
Initial Strategy
The russian SAG TF001 is ordered to intercept a scheduled transit of 4 US Starlifter A/C from Enietwok to Andersen Airbase in Guam. A US SAG is believed to be in the area. Open confrontation with the US SAG is to be avoided.
The Russian commander has a total of 31 aircraft at his disposal. Basic idea is, that while the US commander is free to plott an evading course for his AC for most of the distance, the AC will eventually have to close in to Andersen Airbase on Guam. Therefore, easiest area of intercept is near Andersen Airbase.
Air patrols will be set up in two half-circles, Inner Circle (IC) and Outer Circle (OC). These two patrol ares are divided each into three patrol areas, North, Middle and South. Each area will be patroled by one AC at all times, so regarding the 1-3 role, three AC are assigned to each patrol area.
The SAG will be ordered west to offer support for the air patrols and to minimize risks of conflict with the US SAG.
(Basic Setup, see File Air Lane Raiders Russian Side A)
1800 – 1830
Several Air contacts registered, none identified. Contacts lost and reaquired constantly. Probably recconnaissance helos from US SAG.
2000
Forger AC proved not suitable for patrol flights due to insufficient operational range. Forgers are recalled and Helos assigned instead. (see File Air Lane Raiders Russian B)
2000 – 0900
**no new developement**
0930
Worn down by over 15 hours of waiting and „new contact“ and "contact lost" messages, Bogie-149 almost went unnoticed. Seperated from the SAG, the unidentified AC is on a direct course to Guam Airbase.
The unidentified AC is marked as hostile and an air intercept mission is plotted. 3 Forger AC are assigned to intercept the target.
0940
Bogie-149 is positively identified as Starlifter AC, Forger interceptors on route to target. Intercept mission doesn’t seem to work as planned, Forger circles SAG with Loiter speed. Manual intercept ordered, speed increased to full. Forger closes in on Starlifter.
0945
Starlifter is taken out. Forger return to SAG. (see Air Lane Raiders Russian C)
1025
Unidentified AC observed with strange course in direction of Guam. Designated as Bogie-160 and kept under close surveillance.
1030
Bogie-160 penetrates outer circle. 2 Forgers ordered to launch and intercept suspected Starlifter.
Forgers on course to intercept AC.
Bogie-164 registered, with suspiscious course to Guam.
1038
Forgers identify Bogie-160 as Starlifter and succesfully take it out.
1100
New probable Starlifter registered. Helo confirms Starlifter. Some mistake at the launch order sends Forgers up almost too late. Forgers slowly close in on target. Fuel is becoming critical.
1150
Forgers catch up with Starlifter and takes him out.
1200
3 down, 1 to go. Several Bogies present themselves as likely Starlifters but always turn around and head back to the US SAG. 20 minutes later one bogie emerges from the group heading for Guam. Two Forgers receive orders to intercept the contact.
1238
The Bogie is identified as Starlifter and the interceptors receive their confirmations to take out the target. Two minutes later the Forgers have reached their targets and destroy the Starlifter.
Another AC seemingly bound for Guam emerges from the US SAG. The Helix, patroling section OC middle, is ordered to approach the Bogie and identify.
5 Minutes later the Helix identifies the Bogie as Sea King Helo. No aggressive action is ordered to minimize the risk of the situation becoming hot with the US SAG already operating too close for comfort.
1303
Another suspiscious AC moves away from the cover of the american SAG towards Guam.
1310
Without any further action the mission is declared a succes. The Russian side suffered zero losses, and spent 7 Aphids, while the US Navy lost 4 Starlifter AC.
**end of after-action report**
