No - we won't be starting until probably After July 8 - we're getting organized and getting everything set, so what you are seeing is preliminary support and an attempt to keep everyone posted as to how things are proceeding.

I'll fill in wherever you need me - either side or turns per week :D
Edit - camping ie bug food next week - can start in earnest 3rd week of July!

I might be available to offer some tips to the Allied team. Given that General Staff is coaching the Axis, the Allies can stand with a bit of help...;)

LoL. Especially after he's tinkered with the scenario, it seems only fair.

But I do feel we should maybe postpone the start until everyone gets their new shiny toy. For those who've played ACOW I think it's important to understand changes and play hotseat with the changed scenario before we either discuss or hand out advice.

@Mark

Just want to tell you and Becker that i probably can't start at July, 8th. Depends on how fast matrix ships my toaw3.

Don't want to complain about having no * at my name, guess this is because i didn't play toaw3 yet.......

I'll offer my poor advice to the highest bidder, but I am also forced to dry swim at the moment as I have no TOAW3, not yet arrived. Don't know how critical it is that the instructors will have to train the recruits on new weapons based on what the know about the old weapons... :o :)

Anyway I'll be around to help most days. If anything I'd prefer the Allied side.

Yes - a quick note that we'll probably start *** with discussions *** on July 8th, but hold off before starting the scenarios until those expecting the Matrix shipments for their contributions receive them - fair as they helped produce the game and starting without them would be...it would be... blasphemy, heresy, and treason.

At this point, to - we're still in the organization process and new players are still signing up. Registration will be open to the 22nd, too - so the delay in "not jumping right in" doesn't hurt. More notes to follow...soon...

Maybe your avatar compelled Mark to put you in command of one of those *cough* elite *cough* ad-hoc tank killer battalions with superior French equipment. Like your choice of car, some people never learn! :p :bite:

Lol. But taking a Tiger II with Porsche turret as an avatar would be too plump..it's also true that i don't drive a Porsche..

Anyway no problem with that. And thanks to Mark for his work with this all and for waiting until everyone has his "new toy".

No, probably an error or misread on my part - the more veterans involved the better, so...you'll get a star by your name in the next update,  :D

bedtime for now...oh and no worry, game play - will start after the 8th, we'll just get everyone in the rooms to talk...

"Um...yeah, Hi! My name is Mark...and I'm...um, a TOAW addict...and uh...I was out with some friends the other night having dinner and I had to...um, go to the bathroom...at least that's what I said...so I got some TP and started calculating the kill spread for a standard nearly full strength Pz38t regiment 81% proficiency, 45% supply and readiness on ignore losses, limited attack with one flight of 26 Ju-87's with 92% prof, 60% S&R, in hazy weather, and assorted artillery in support, against an early Soviet tank division with early T34's and T-26's entrenched on the opposite side of the river in light woods estimated at 50% proficiency, 100% S&R, overstacked in the orange with two rifle divisions both in the orange, with at least one supporting artillery regiment. I um...ran out of....toilet paper..." :upset:

Here, here. Big thanks to Mark for his work on organizing this. And thanks to all you others who have posted helpful links and contributed in other ways. I'm poring over the wealth of OOBs, AARs, scenario notes, etc. in eager anticipation!

Ok...updating now...

Heinz57
07 Jul 06, 08:52
Roster is updated and is about the size I anticipated - 15 per side. Consideration might be given to capping the roster at 40 players (20 per side) - welcome feedback on this.

Three players are unassigned as I haven't heard anything from them since their initial interest which didn't cover side/rate of play.

In the next couple of days, the team forums will become restricted to the respective rosters. Anyone having difficulty getting into their assigned forum should e-mail me at yazidee (at) aol (dot) com - and we'll try to take care of it. Please note that you may not receive an immediate response, I live in "fuzzy time" with a highly variable schedule.

While we will proceed with discussions on July 8, actual play may be delayed. There is word of a possible new patch and I'll keep everyone appraised of this and other specifics.

I think it is probably appropriate for players to go ahead and initiate contact with their Axis/Allied counterparts and exchange e-mail addresses. If someone does not hear from their counterpart say by July 11, contact me via e-mail and we will attempt to resolve or reassign as is appropriate.

In some cases, some players may play faster or slower than you like - optimal matches aren't always possible. For the sake of players having the time and interest, mirror play is possible. After we get going and you feel you have time for more, a thread will be started for players wanting mirror matches. These will be more informal and won't be tracked by teams.

After the 10th, I will likely be frequently available in the chat room for players with questions to provide some real-time support. It is appropriate for all players to understand that the veteran advisors are totally doing this on a volunteer basis and it would be an overbearing request to expect them to provide everyone with the same level or amount of attention. In a team environment, everyone is free, welcome and encouraged to jump in.

Great appreciation is extended to Jean-Luc Der Wander Moderator and Cyber Ranger for their assistance and support of the workshop; and for General Staff, Jamiam, Dicke Bertha and Foggy for jumping in as advisors.

I was planning on producing several HTML files in support of the workshop, but am hesitant to add to an already very substantial amount of information available - so will simply catalog what I can find and summarize the nature of each link. Given possible changes in the game engine, and the likelihood that your questions may be very different from what someone else might think they are...development of additional support materials will be done as needed.

Sorry to be long-winded...trying to cover all bases...

Re: capping the roster at 40 people would depend on

1) your available time to administer, to accomodate new players into the structure, assigning them to teams

2) Speed of progress once we start: at some point pretty soon once we've started, newcomers cannot join since they will be hopelessly behind the flow of things. Still some people might drop off, so maybe best to not shut the gates too early

3) I hope this initiative will work and prove effective and successful; if so ideally this workshop idea could be iterative; restart once we're done, and be something ongoing as soon as sufficient amounts of new fodder/aces-in-spe report in. With the turn rate indicated in the roster, the slowest parties will still be done within one month. Maybe we could have one workshop per month for some time (speculation). That would mean better to close the recruitment office say one week after the start, and then immediately start setting up the following workshop (with another scenario). Apart from helping new players learn quickly, it might also actually atract new recruits, if they know there is a place to train before going to combat...

4) I assume this won't be ladder play, but perhaps some medal could be given for partaking. As a diploma...

Also, maybe a short order of conduct and game settings should be set up.

General Staff
07 Jul 06, 13:53
All good ideas. Especially the diploma, but you've got to complete the course- all 12 turns. I'd encourage new players to try the game out in hotseat mode for all 12 turns (we're all waiting on patches anyway so exercise is good). That's playing both sides so you get an idea of what each side is capable of. Also gives you an idea of whether you have the time and commitment to play through.

Drop-outs are a perennial problem in PBEM play in any game, and anything to help discourage desertion is welcome. Including being shot. There's nothing more depressing than having an opponent just totally drop off the radar. Even if you're losing badly there's always the option of offering a surrender and I've done this, but only once (he says wincing, hands trembling and with a marked tick in his left eye). It's disappointing for your opponent but it's a courtesy gesture that's usually appreciated.

I've surendered once too, at least ;) (New Yorkers and Danes will be the end of me), and I must say being part of the General Staff Execution Shooting Detail might be preferable, I hear Schnapps is liberally distributed! :toast::D Where do we sign up?

An idea for spice: The team advisors fight too vs each other? What if the rookie Allies win, despite the hints given to them by their crappy advisors, being undressed by their German counterparts?

Larry Faulkerson* 6+/wk------------- vs. ---- Telumar* 3-5/wk

Members with an * by their name are known to have experience and/or (ahem...insider knowledge) of TOAW who can be considered qualified to assist new players.[...]. I don't want to presume that they will assume the role of assistant or advisor (i.e. volunteer work for them) - so it will be up to each to specify their level of involvement.

I think me and Larry surely will give some screenshots and/or movies (Larry) and explanations on what we're doing and why etc. Haven't contacted him yet, but i am almost sure he will post something in that direction..

Shoot (disband) every tenth battalion, then the rest know it's serious. Another morale trick TOAW yet fails to model... :smoke:

Disband ALL units, than write your opponent that you are so happy that you finally received the invisibility cloaks you requested from your science office (hint that it's a random event at 2% propability), and immediately applied them to turn all your units invisible. Tell him that you are on your way to Paris now, and that he might try to catch you if he can. :clown:

Next, pester Dicke Bertha for his coalition tournament turn, Operation Ketchup has to continue as planed :shy:

It ain't called hotseat for nothing. Apparently at least now that Elmer is holding your ass to the fire.

Late Edit: Obviously Elmer and hotseat are different, though they may have something in common. And don't forget, in hotseat, you're always your own best friend or worst enemy.

Just a bump to this thread - newly assigned players should read the first post of this thread.

Also make sure you download the revised scenario for the workshop (attached below) and the latest patch from the Matrix Games Members section (v. 3.0.0.17). Contact your opponent via PM to acquire e-mail addressed.

You should be added shortly (1-2 days) to your respective private team forums, which will appear above these public open threads.

I wanted to alert everyone that I am liljim, but am listed in the initial team listings as N9ZLU. That is my HAM radio handle. I am registered on this forum as liljim

That should be of particular interest to carvinaxe, my opponent.
