Seeing the Elephant- A new/inexperienced player event.

This event is open to all registered SZO CM Ladder members with the following restrictions/requirements applying: (they are still subject to change).

Event Moderators have the final say in who plays in this event.

1. You consider yourself to be new to CM (CMBB will be the version played).
2. You consider yourself to be inexperienced at playing CM.
3. If inexperienced you'd like some “instruction” on how to play a better game.
4. You have played 5 or less “Ladder” games anywhere (and still feel inexperienced).
5. Your only opponent up to now has been the A.I.

Tutors will be provided for players to ask tactical or game play questions- but not questions concerning the scenario being played.

It is scheduled to begin in mid/late July.
There will be 4 games played and all will count on the CM Ladder.

Anyone who believes that they qualify for this event should post below indicating that they would like to participate.

Edited to say 'If I can't play  is there any other way I can assist / be involved?'

Unfortunately Neils 10+ ladder games is more than the "5 or less" we'd like inexperienced players to have.

But as mentioned if we don't have enough "newbies" signup we'll expand the requirements as needed.

so then us "Newbies" would be playing veterans, that doesn't seem to fair.

Trust me I know what you mean!

But we really need at least 12+ new players to make a decent event.
But don't worry with only 4 games being played we should be able to match up players of the same skill level/experience. And if you hear some of the lower ranked players talk they need as much help as a new player!

Btw, Did I foget to WELCOME you & Neon to SZO the CM Forum?

No one jumped on this, so in a nutshell:

It has to do with the first experiences of a soldier & deals mainly with the first time a soldier comes under enemy fire /or fires at the enemy it's called "Seeing the Elephant."

The phrase could date back to either Alexander the Great's men seeing elephants in India or "Italian" soldiers seeing Hannibal's elephants along the Alps. But the phrase became popular in the American Civil War I believe, used by the green recruits after their first battle, "I've seen the elephant" (= now I've seen it all).

I figured why not use it for the first "CM Event" of the new players.

Not a big rush to sign up, which is a concern.
Might be that the really new players don't know we're here.
One way or another there will be an "inexperienced player tourney."

"Perhaps you should post an announcement about the "Elephant Tournament" on the Battlefront web site."

I was wondering if it would be okay to play "warm-up" battles with other members?

Maybe TCP/IP, so that it's done by the time the tournament begins? I don't even know how long PBEM takes . . . anyone?

If anyone is interested, JasonC on the battlefront.com forums has posted a series of training lessons using Russian forces. The scenarios are on www.blowtorchscenarios.com.

Don't worry guys. Kerry will fill you in. I knew almost nothing about computers and had never played against another human at the time of my first tournament--CMBO in those days. If I could figure it out, it will a breeze for each of you in no time at all.

I do suggest that you read the manual. It has a great deal of useful information, including about playing by email [PBEM].

Don't know if it is too late to join the tourney (I think I qualify as a noob). I've played a total of 4 PBEM's with CM (3-CMBB and 1 CMAK) and would love to learn and join in. I have never played in a ladder or tournement. If you need another member for an even number of contestants...I raise my hand.

Hi Palantir, guys...

I don't know if I'm on time, but before jumping in I would like to ask what would be the turnaround for the games. I mean: are we speaking about a move per day? Or is it more flexible, so you have enough time to ask your instructor before moving?

And... What about the size of the scenarios?

I bought the game a month ago, and I have only played the first tutorial, as I don't like to play against a computer. I would rather to discover the game slowly, while I'm being beated again and again ;)

Thanks in advance for the info,

miguel.

Welcome Swing. A turn a day is about normal, you can work it out with your oppo.
Not sure how big the rounds will be but 20-30 is about the norm.

Good luck and hop[e you learn lots.:salute:

30 Aug 06, 12:13
Dan--I would say that a file per day for each player is about the high norm. That is except for Kerry's giant tournament battles for experienced players. In those he expects about 2 full turns per week.

Of course Kerry (Palantir) will let everyone know the expected pace for the "Elephant" Tournament. I'm sure it will be fast enough to keep all involved in the games, but not so fast as to make it chore. Remember that consultation with more experienced CM players will be available for the players in this tournament. So that factor might slow the pace just a tad.

The scernarios will be "small" overall, about 20-30 turns each offering a variety of units & the use of different tactics in each. They will work their way up in complexity.

Turns as of now will be 3+ a week as the Rounds (once began) need to be quick and completed in a short time (or no one will be Newbies when the tourney ends). We may be running 2 scenarios (rounds) at the same time but that has not been finalized.

Players will be matched up randomly: you will not be playing the same player twice.

I NEED all players on the list to send me an email/PM with whatever Email they wish to use for this tournament. Without your email I can not send you the game files.

The following players are not yet registered on the CM Ladder:

Blade91
Redbear415
Irishwop67
Simonsezdie
Weags2

Also- if you have not sent me your Email address please do so ASAP.

This one should be kicking off on Sept 8th.

Players have been randomly assigned to play either the Allied or Axis side.

There will also be a "Seeing the Elephant" Help Thread for each side labled: StE Axis or StE Allied. Only players playing on that side should look at that thread. (If you are playing the Axis side DO NOT look in the StE Allied thread & visa-versa!)

If you are playing and have any game-play questions please post them in the appropriate thread. Scenario "detail" questions will not be answered (ex. does my opponent have any tanks etc.) A type question that will be answered is: "I see I have have off-board Artillery (mines/flamethrowers/etc) how do I move/use it? Will be answered.

This of course is an honesty issue- if you feel the need to cheat by looking in the other sides thread please go back to just playing against the A.I. as it doesn't care if your are a cheater- we do.

One question regarding the forums:

Won't having these forums possibly spoil the scenario for other players playing the same side?

For example, if I'm on turn 15 and ask a question but someone else is still on turn 10, won't that reveal the later content of the scenario?

Besides for the above "missing" player info we are good to go for a 9/9 start date- this 1st round will end in 11/4/06. Players will have 8 weeks to get in 20turns. The scenario / unit count is small so this should not be a problem. :halo:

If you have any game Setup / PBEM / File questions etc I will be home on 9/9 so send me a PM or email & I will get back to you as quickly as I can. If you have any "in game" tactical or unit questions post in the appropriate StE side thread. The threads will be checked daily.

I'm posting this here since it applies to both sides. Thi is first time I've played CM PBEM. The file naming seems confusing to me. My opponent and I have exchanged a few files. I started the naming convention using the 001, the second file I sent to him, I named 002 thinking that would make since, but actually, it was still turn 1, and in fact when he returned it to me still using the 002 name which seemed right, it was the turn 1 action phase, I watched action and returned to him for him to watch turn 1 action and plot his turn 2, manual-wise I just completed step 5 in PBEM sequence, but the file name I used was ....002action.

This doesnt seem very intuitive to me. I feel like this should have been named 001final or 001action or something.

I read your doc about file naming, but could you go into a bit more detail on file naming conventions commonly used?

I've also invited my opponent to let me know if he has a better way to do this.

Also, I tend to be pretty cautious, so I tend to save all of my files (both recieved and sent). Is there any benefit to this? i.e. are thes of any use in event of file corruption?

Sorry for questions that probably seem pretty obvious to veterans.

There is no one correct way to name files.

However, allow me to offer some suggestions from experience. Don't worry about turns; instead use a "numbering" system that allows each of you to identify each file in its order. I have found it easiest to use a numeric based system in which the files numbered (in smaller games--in larger ones [not applicable here] I start with 001) XXX_game_T01, 02, 03, 04, etc. in order. I have also found it easier for one and only one player to also use a letter designator to further identify each file he creates. For example, 01, 02a, 03, 04a. So if I am the second player I can instantly recognize each file I have created by knowing that it has an even numbered file and ends in "a". If I am the first player, I know that each file I created has an odd number and no letter follows that number. KISS! This is especially helpful when you are playing more than one game.

Palantir
12 Sep 06, 16:30
I just use the next number in order 001/002/003 etc.
Example: Allied move 011/Axis move 012/ Movie file 013...

When playing PBEM's I normally keep the last two full game turns or about 6 emails. That way I have the latest turns "backed up" but don't have 110 email files on my computer. For those of you only playing one game that may not seem like much...wait until you have 7,8 or 10+ games going.

And as far as returning game files I check my emails to see which ones I have sent return emails to. Helps me not skip over anybody.

Good Luck and Good Hunting.

OK, antoher general question, now that I'm actually playing an email game, for me at least, it seems to be easy to lose track of what pahse of a turn I'm getting from my opponent. I've adopted a naming scheme where we simply increment numbers, to keep things simple. But when I get a turn, I have a hard time rembering if I'm going to just watch, or if I'm going to watch and plot.

The computer takes of it for me of course, but I'd like to know ahead of time so I can budget my time better. I'f I'm just going to watch a replay, I can do that and zip that file back to my opponent in nothing flat, but if I'm going to actually have to think about what I'm doing I need a little more time (I'm not one of these 3 minutes and I'm done movers, I'm old and slow).

So, question: Do you vets use any chklist of current email games to keep track of phase youre in (or some other aid?)?

And, on a related note, can you save an email turn in middle of your phase, then load it later and continue on (i.e, if somthing like well supper interupts it?

I'm not sure how you vets manage to not get confused when you're playing multiple email CMBB games. I have to admit, I am looking forward to getting a turn in the mail (though that will probably stop quick when it means I'm getting shot at).

Thanks

Rick

Every PBEM game goes in a three phase cycle. Where you start within that three phase cycle depends on who began the game. and of course depends upon when you start counting them. The three phases are:

1. View movie and return the file you generate to your opponent
2. Plot orders only (there is no movie to watch) and return
3. View movie, then plot orders and return

You will generally see that the phase 2 files are smaller than in the other two phases, as it does not contain a movie. All other things being equal (meaning a rough equivalence in movement and combat), the phase 1 & 3 files should be roughly the same size.

After the initial force placement files, the first player (who also did his initial force placement first) will plot orders only--this will be the third file exchanged in the game. The second player will then plot his orders, hit go and generate a movie file that the first player will get to see when he receives file number four from the second player.

WHAT??!!! Even with all of my excellent tutoring?!! :p

That is interesting. During playtest BOTH sides complained bitterly about this scenario being unbalanced in the OTHER SIDES FAVOR!!! It was quite funny actually but very hard to balance that way.

The results are actually historical since the Romanians did win this fight but I would have thought that the Soviet gamers could have done better in six games than to only win one of them. I'm assuming that the big difference in the games played here and our playtests is tactics. These scenarios were playtested using veteran gamers and it is hard to determine what inexperienced gamers will do. Or how a scenario, or QB, will play between a group of gamers at any level.

In any event, I'm surprised to see the dominance by the Axis gamers here. I would have though that the more experienced gamer should be Axis in this scenario, with the harder task to win, being placed on the Axis gamer. That, of course, depends on what the Allied gamer does....

Very interesting.

Good Hunting.

According to the tournament webpage there have only been two results reported for the second scenario 'HSG AM First Clash (http://www.xtreme-gamer.com/forums/wfhq-ld-ladder-games.php?ld=on&ladder=&scenario=6309)' with one victory each way so far, so fairly well balanced so far as MR predicted.

A quick question regarding the scores. I entered my own score but used the battle points that came up in the ladder report rather than the percentage at the end of the game. Is that right? I assumed so but I notice that the other allied minor victory is down as 62 rather than the 23 I got. One of these must be wrong mustn't it? It looks like one or two others might have used the percentage instead of battle points too.

Mangus. What do the numbers in the parentheses mean? Just wondering.
They are the points spent by each winning team, so 1409 is what was spent on the Axis force and 1362 for the Allies.

Antonius, regarding the difference in points. I'm not too sure how Palantir was doing the points for the StE, i'll get back to you on this one:o

Tried to send this via e-mail but my message was returned:

Dan,

My Rd2 game with kineas is on turn 19/20+

Rd3 game with Rickie has recently started--one turn played.

I saw on the forum that you have me listed as playing cwsommer in Rd1. That's news to me. I started against Timu24, but he dropped out early on. I later received a cc on a message from Kerry to cwsommer asking him if he'd like to play me, but never heard anything further. I'd be happy to play it, but would prefer to play as Allies, since that's what I was assigned originally. Never had any enemy contact in my original game.

Thanks for taking over the chore of managing this beast of a tournament. Happy New Year!

Just to keep you all updated on the current situation regarding players involved, point allocation and Passwords.
We have Setanta and RedBear on side so hopefully apart from cwsommer we have a full roster, if not please bing to my attention!

I have emailed Kerry to see how he was allocating points, am gonna give it another week or so and if no reply i will do an over-haul of the points.

What i will be doing is taking your scores as reported on the ladder for your points. For example Blade91 (21) vs Kineas (79) AXIS (1409) Major Victory will then read Blade91 (8) vs Kineas (30) AXIS (1409) Major Victory
I hope you find this fair but if you have any concerns then feel free to voice them to me.

With regards to the password problem Redbear bought to my attention, as above i have emailed Kerry and hopefully he can update me on what they are aswell.

Once again apologies for all the confusion.

I don't know about 1st Clash!

1st Clash isn't all that tough. The Soviets have numbers and the Romanians have something far more important...intelligence. This should allow the Romanians to concentrate their firepower wherever they want it.

Either in a big block of firepower or in smaller blocks that outmaneuver the Soviets.

An all across the map advance, with no concentration anywhere, will get you cut to pieces by this Soviet tank force. The Soviets only have T-26's. The armour is like paper. So is the R2 armour. Then what is the difference? The Romanian reaction time! To put the Soviet armor in a position that it has to defend multiple threats from different directions at the same time.

A mass of Romanian tanks coming over either the left or right flank of the Soviet position will give the advantage of having to deal with only a portion of the defenders immediately while the R player has numbers in his favor. Once the S tank force starts to deteriorate the game is on it's way to the history books. Especially if there are some tanks on the other flank to take advantage of that initial OMG knee jerk when the S player sees his forces being hit on a flank with the concentrated R tanks. Once his tanks turn to face the concentration a delayed attack force moves over the ridge and then hits those tanks in the flank as well since they turned to face the concentration. At this point no matter which way a S tank turns it is being hit in the flank.

This is basic warfare. Demonstate in front of them to get their attention then hit them in the flanks. This map will allow that.

Hope this helps.

Good Hunting.

I have no idea...I wouldn't be attacking you would. There will be no Soviet "crushing like a gnat" to any German with Tigers unless you have something that can take them out at range.

In this scenario the Soviets are tasked with keeping the village not Tiger hunting. You keep the Tigers back at range they are safe. Question is can you do that? Are the Germans strong enough to keep the Tigers back out of harms way or do they have to come on in? Can the Soviets keep the village under their control?

You can ask anyone that has ever played me that I am a very conservative and cautious player that is very timid...both on attack and defense.... :lier: :crosseye:

I can guarantee an experience that you will not get with another player. I won't take advantage of the fact that you are new and do outlandish things to you...just ask Mangus...but wait until you finish Black Pigs, the last scenario of the tournament...he'll have an insight or two of how aggressive or passive I can be and what kind of an opponent.

You call. We can still keep trying to find somebody else.

Good Hunting.

If you are referring to playing against me, not bad at all....I'm routinely beaten.

I had a playtester beat me on both sides of my own scenario once during playtest. He beat me both as the Germans and the Russians. I just went ahead and released it after that. I knew it could be won from both sides and in a H2H match that is all I was trying to determine.

My email is:

sro_cm@yahoo.com

I always answer questions, comments or other CM issues for those that email me as well. Just make sure you put something in the title of the email that shows it is CM related.

I haven't recieved responce from Gen Schmaeter since Jan 14. I suppose our game was nearly at end. I can e-mail my last turn to you.
In fact, it's a second time I've almost finished round 2 scenario :D First as Axis, now as Allies, opponnents dropping out of tourney in both cases.

Did you get my return email to you? I sent you a reply and am now awaiting your attack with my men hugging the bottoms of their foxholes....

Just so you all know, Mangus has played, or is playing me, in all four of the tournament scenarios. So that he has a good idea of the kind of scenarios that are in the tournament. Since he didn't set it up, he thought it would be good idea to play them.

He will tell you that I am a mild mannered and meek commander....

Starting over is fine. Actually it would probably be better because otherwise you would be tied down to a set-up that you might not want.

Your choice. If you want to start over send me your setup. If you want to wait we can.

I'll take his setup or use one of mine. If you think about it the default setup is MINE!!!

Our Round 3 game with Setanta has just ended in Axis (me) major victory.
He was very good at killing my infantry as I got 24 casualties, but Tigers are Tigers.
Anyway I was surprised by 2 things - the bridge wasn't mined at all!! And I lost a lot of time moving tanks through all this scattered trees along the river . Another surprise was that Mark didn't try to sneak by river bank with his horde of T34s and rush my Tigers.

Ok guys...if you're ready to start talking about this one then I'll open the thread. Let's don't discuss it in here.

I have opened a thread called: Eye of the Tiger...Let's Discuss Surprise! It doesn't go to the top of the page. Look for it down the thread listing.

Mangus, did you guys notice, that you have so many sticky threads here in the tournament section, that a normal thread almost doesn't make it to the front page? There should be enough posting in the tournament threads that they don't roll off the front page don't you think?

As usual, I posted my thoughts on the scenario and the strengths and weaknesses of each side. What tactics will win and what more than likely won't win.

This thread is open only to those that have finished the scenario...MANGUS KEEP OUT until we finish....lol....

Why can I never find the tournament results????

Is there some plot to keep the tournament results so hard to find?

You guys have tons of tournaments shouldn't you have a simple way to find the results?

Or am I the only one who can't see the tree for the forest?

Joe Cz reporting an Axis minor victory (woohoo, that's me!) over the Soviet hordes (that's Rickie). I'll go look for the scenario thread and post some hindsight over there. Final score: 58-42.

Is there a round 4 to this tourney? How many of us are still left?

This has been fun so far (though it wouldprobably have been more fun if I wasn't on the bottom of the ladder.).

Thanks for taking over on this MR.

I haven't taken over. I'm just the supporting staff. Mangus is the one that took over. All credit goes in his corner.

There is a 4th scenario. The tournament was planned to have 4 scenarios and I have heard nothing that indicates that that has changed.

The fourth scenario is going to put everything you have learned in the first three to the test. You will feel abject horror or elation as the scenario moves through it's different stages of battle. It is quite different than the three battles before it and should prove to be quite instructive for those still wanting to be involved in the tournament.

You mean I was supposed to learn something from these defeats??? (other than losing gracefully, I mean) Uh oh. I'm in trouble now.

Thanks M.R. You did the scenarios though didn't you? Haven't seen many posts from Mangus lately.

thanks
