can captured supplies be used by any unit in the vicinity of them, or are they just considered captured and thus unusable by the enemy?

as a side note, i dont know if im spoiled by the PZC/MC games, but this game desperately needs some hot keys for sight lines and for available movement.

You can use em :)

Isn't it nice that they use the same kind of ammo you do.

The highlighting is only for organizational structure, not who can actually use the supplies. Any unit in your army can pull ammo from any supply wagon in your army, as long as they have an unobstructed path to it within 5 hexes.

Are supply sources the same in range as wagon trains? Also, can they be depleted? And I take it they are capturable and usable too?

Supply sources do not help with replenishing ammo. Here's some good quotes:

Ordinarily, units are declared to be "isolated" if they cannot trace a path free of enemy ZOC to a map edge. Normally, that happens on "close" situations. For instance, two enemy units, one on each side of your unit. However, you can also isolate larger groups of enemy units, especially if you are able to pin them against a river or the like.

Anyway, a scenario designer can put a supply source on the map, and that serves as an alternate place to trace the path to. For instance, a supply source in Fort Henry means that even if the fort itself is entirely surrounded, the garrison will not be considered "isolated", because they can trace to that source.

As a rule, supply sources are placed in forts and an occasional town. I believe there was discussion of putting one at Pittsburg Landing in Shiloh, but I'm not positive if that was added in the last patch or not.

One thing to add. Realize, that Supply Sources have NO effect on units being low on ammo. If your unit is running out of bullets, only wagons can resupply them.

There is a way to check sight lines. You can click on the "crosshairs" icon while you have a hex highlighted and it will show you all the hexes visible from that location. It's a great tool for planning defensive lines, artillery positions, or unseen movements. Also great for finding spots for your scouting cavalry to sit to get maximun coverage.
