Cobra's catching enemy open terrain?

Just curious (new to SB) - In the few limited scenario's I've played thus far....I've found Cobra's to be somewhat ineffective and killing the enemy (even when catching them in open terrain).

Is this simply how the game is modeled?....or perhaps I'm doing something wrong -

I'm sure distance effects effectivness.....but what is the optimal distance range?

I'm not sure what the optimal range is, but I've torn some squads up pretty good with them before. Be careful though, helos are pretty easy to shoot down...
