Hey Norm? How's the credit card / download problem going? You are killing me here! I MUST HAVE THIS GAME!
;-D
Just kidding of course....also, do you plan to announce the follow up soon?
How long does it take to set up a Paypal account Norm ? We give you the cash, you give us a download link - could it get any simpler :stirthepot:
I will mail you one of my kidneys to be able to play this soon.
Seems like development has just creeped along the last few months.
I know there's an element of professional pride in there, but why not work out a deal with Paradox to have them sell it through their gamersgate.com site.
They seem perfectly happy to distribute games that are simultaneously sold directly by the developer, and let the developer retain full control of the property and future development. I'm sure there are lots of other venues to explore.
Something like that would also give a bit of instant exposure, since I am sure there are lots of people who would love this game, but they will never know about it.

Waiting got all the recomended books Massie etc from Amazon sent to New Zealand .... looking forward to this one ......
I know this is slightly off topic but has there been any discussion on cost for the game?
The loyal fans have spent so long waiting for this apparition of a game that I think Norm should adopt charitable status and give it away free for causing us so much grief
If it were just a Credit card problem I think it would be out by now.
Concern is they have found a problem bug..

I wish...
A bug I could handle much more rapidly than all this merchant setup stuff. Except for dropping the final set of damage geometry into the game (a ton of models) and cleaning up a couple of alt-tab related things, almost all of our time lately has been devoted to the merchant side of the business.
Should not this have been done in...the last six months that the company has been founded?
Im not trying to be one of 'those' people and I can fully understand delays from a small team.
But it seems to me this sort of things should have been worked on to conincide with the last touches on the game.
Its things like this that gives wargame companies the reputation from slowness and never looking like they know what they are doing.

Damn I hate the last couple of weeks waiting the anticipation is killing me ;) Tho Im sure it will be all sorted shortly and the wait will have been well worth it. Keep at it boys kick a few butts and get it out to us :)
With no anoncement of having gone gold, the offical web site doesn't show anything new beyond April, no new previews, no new review copies out, I would guess this game is still 30 to 45 days out. :upset: Think end of July or mid August. :OHNO:

Personally, I'm tickled pink that they decided to make this game and I can wait until they're ready. Just think - a naval simulation of the Russo-Japanese War. No developer with a lick of sense would touch that. Naval sims are widely known as bombs, and who ever heard of the Russo-Japanese War? This is a labor of love, laddies, and it will be a-bornin' in its own good time. I would advise against too much kvetching, unless you want to emulate the flight sim fellows who managed to practically kill the genre.
Take your time, Norm. We'll be around when you're happy with it.
Managed to open a bank account yet Norm ?
Norm thanks for working so hard on the project. We all know you are trying very hard to get her out!!
Afterall I'm sure you really want a paycheck for the past few years of effort!!
TOAW III is a blast by the way from Matrix!
How much Norm for this baby anyways? $80-100 US?
Take care and have a great July 4th (July 1st for us Canucks  ) weekend!!
How much Norm for this baby anyways? $80-100 US?
Please, don't put such ideas into his head :-D. That's over 40% of my monthly income.
£40 - £50 pounds is way over the odds for a 3d strategy game. I would not consider anything over £30 ($60).
Norm - we need an UPDATE on how far off the release is and how you are solving your fornt end merchant problems.

This is starting to get very frustrating....
Phil
Is this how it is going to be for patches and sequels?
Sadly this is just about the most active community on the net for this game. It would be nice if Storm Eagle had a dedicated forum.
It has been nearly three weeks since Norm stated they were working on the buisness side of things.
Add that to the six months that Storm Eagle has been a company. Surely it cannot be this diffucult and time consuming to find a company to handle CC processing and set up an account with them.
Maybe they are still getting servers together to handle the distribution of the game and patches?
The wait is annoying... what I find more annoying is the hyperbole in the statemens that they do make... done in 14 days, definite news next week, best game ever, etc.. and then nothing for months.
The game looks totally awesome and I want it last year, and I really love most of Norm's other games... but this is getting ridiculous. It's their game and they have the right to do whatever they want with it, but if this goes on much longer they're going to have a market of about 5 people.
As a total geek and a programmer myself I totally understand the desire to do everything my own way, but I really think that the game (and their wallets...) would have been better served with trying to distribute the game through one of the established wargame distributers like Matrix, Battlefront, HPS, Shrapnel or Paradox. If you're going to go your own way, you'd better be prepared to spend the time that is needed to build a successful distribution channel. A website that promises a revolution in gaming should be updated more than a few times per year.
I dont see why they cannot use E-Liscense
I have used them before for a half dozen different reasons and they offer great servers and their customer service is excellent.
I usualy get a responce in 12 hours or less.

Thanks for your interest. Nobody wants to ship Distant Guns:RJW more than us. We have been working on this engine and delivery system for (5) years now. There is nothing like it anywhere.
My aunt, god rest here soul, said it best. She had a burger and ice cream place long before Dairy Queen ever showed up.
At the bottom of the menu were wise words indeed:
"Great food takes time to prepare, so please be patient and wait!"
We are testing release candidate 1 now and putting the final touches on!

Steam oh my God the worst ever IMHO.
Really I wonder is heavy copy protection necessary for these types of programs. Its a very small niche and from some studies I have seen have the highest per capita income of all the PC gaming categories. Lets face it wargamers/naval sim types are not your typical "click fest" pirates. I wonder how much $$$$ Norm has to sink into for this copy protection. I would have rather him improve the product even further and have a killer release. I have D/L'ed several of Matrixs wargames and to my knowledge they have not copy protection. If I need to make an extra copy (lets face it they get scratched to hell) I can. I hate having to install a game then when one wipes the HD or uninstalls the product you have no way or re installing it to another machine or your laptop?? arrggh.
How is TOAW III being released by Matrix?
My two cents :)

I am looking forward to this one as well. I still need to pick up Massie's "Dreadnought", but I received "The Russo-Japanese War 1904-1905: British Naval Attache Reports" in the mail today from Battery Press. At some point I will get "the Tide at Sunrise".
I also picked up "Jutland 1916" by Steel and Hart, Halpern's "A Naval History of World War I", and Massie's "Castles of Steel".

Greetings Storm Eagle Fans!
We are testing release candidate (1) of Distant Guns: The Russo-Japanese War 1904-05 as this newsletter goes out. That means we could be releasing our debut title at any time!
It’s been a long road for us and the results are spectacular to say the least! DG:RJW is set to turn wargaming on its head. This game will set all new benchmarks for sure. The ship detail is absolutely astounding!
We truly appreciate your patience, which will be rewarded at anytime now…….

And next and next and more two or three days ... never ending story ...
So, it looks that some issue was found in the first candidate for release and we are now waiting for n+1 candidate ...
So have a good time, see you on September ...
I would be nice if they could send out a newsletter or brief website update when they run into these delays as well... certainly would keep me from salivating all over my keyboard in anticipation and pretty much mounting a DOS attack on their webserver from constant refreshing around the announced release dates... I'm really looking forward to the game, and being set up to expect something soon, and then disappointed, over and over, is starting to burn me out on the whole thing.
I feel the same as you guys. This game looks great and it is frustrating.
From the developers point of view they are damned if they do and damned if they don't give us information. I would think that if its not available this weekend then there is an issue that needs resolving. I for one will stop coming here every few hours to preserve my sanity. Maybe once a week so that I will be pleasantly surprised in the near future
OK then see you in a few hours ;)

Yeah, those summer colds can be nasty, is that achy joints I can feel in my legs ?:D
It's been almost 2 weeks since the "2-3 days, any time now" announcement... starting to almost wish that I could NOT buy the game, just to show my dissatisfaction. I don't mind delays (ok well I do...), but the fact that they can't just pop in and tell us when it becomes clear that they won't make their announced dates is driving me batty.
I already booked August off.........I figured that would be the month. Getting closer
Personally I would book the next 5 1/2 months off just to make sure you hit the real release date. Even August seems optimistic now
They must be having some serious problems with this game. I just hope
they can solve the problems before the release:mad:

If they are having serious problems, and I must admit there does seem to be something wrong, then there wont be a release.

If there is going to be a serious delay I imagine Jim and Norm will let us know. Just because they haven't released yet doesn't mean there are serious problems with the game. They just started testing release candidate 1 the other week and those things do take time.

Maybe its been the patch for TOAWIII that has been taking up his time lately :(
"Norm Koger and the TOAD group has been hard at work perfecting their latest product, The Operational Art of War III, by releasing yet another patch shortly after the game's release. The one month old turn based strategy game is now up to v3.0.0.17, which includes 14 significant changes.
Among the alterations are a speed improvement for supply calculations which allows large scenarios to play more quickly and additional improvements to the computer opponent. Also included is a new scenario and updated briefings for the existing scenarios to note their suitability for PBEM or AI play. Fixes include an adjustment to Anti-Aircraft fire, a reduction in rout and reorganization frequency, additional sound-related fixes and a fix for event upgrade issues."
If there is going to be a serious delay I imagine Jim and Norm will let us know. Just because they haven't released yet doesn't mean there are serious problems with the game. They just started testing release candidate 1 the other week and those things do take time.
True... 2-3 days from the start of testing to release did sound a bit... optimistic. I wonder if they would let a prospective fan do updates to their website or something like that, so they could just send any updates to that person for posting on the site.
The point is they went from rather optimistic 2 weeks ago to no news at all, that suggests a glitch. I am sure when it comes out it will be worth all the waiting :D
Phil

Probably. Missing a self-imposed launch date by at least 2 weeks without any kind of announcement of aknowledgement that it happened is still kind of bad for customer relations.

We are currently testing release candidate (2) of Distant Guns: The Russo-Japanese War 1904-05, having implementing a number of small changes suggested by our test group after a thorough review of candidate 1. This finally looks like the long awaited release build. It’s branded v1.0, so if final test goes smoothly this is the very same build you can expect to be evaluating on your computer before the month is out.

off topic but how is TOAW III? Is it any different than TOAW II. Just a windows remake?
They've added some refinements that Norm was working on, as well as some improvements to utilize the capacity of modern machines (less restrictions on numbers of events, supply points etc).
Some routines, notably supply calculation, have been changed to execute faster at the expense of using more memory (apparantly, they can skip a lot of calculations by using more temporary storage of computed values... a luxury Norm didn't really have with the system requirements of the day).
The most important thing for me is that they are commited to working on the engine for a while longer.
Oh... and they're incorporating some features to make it possible to package modded graphics resources with individual scenarios, so the scenario designer can change icons and GUI elements to suit the scenario, and not impact anything else in the game... pretty neat.

If you play PBEM mostly, I would hold on purchase at this moment. I may get it sometimes in the future after I finish PBEM that I started.
As dogbert said there is some good improvements and AI is now better. But, I never play against AI.
Other than that it is very sensitive matter to mess up very much with the engine of such a cult game because TOAW was a game that we loved and tend to forget some small problems that it had. It have big problems as well but it must be changed seriously and with good approach.
Maybe in 6 month we will be able to decide is TOAW 3 worth a purchase. For example they have changed somewhat how AA units fire on planes and made it too powerful and now they toned it down... Other than that they also mess up code and lot's of units were going into reorg after attacks (they wanted to tone down ant attacks with this) but nobody likes that whole armies goes into reorg and not be available for play so this also is changed I think...
There is also some minor things changed but no major overhaul. So, I think that is better to wait and see. Certanly it lacks Norm spirit ;), maybe if they made a spiritual seanse to get him during development but Maestro Norm is Maestro Norm - they will found out this by themselves soon enough (cough, cough).
And last, privately I think that they are skinning wargamers and charging 40 US$ for this game. That sums it pretty much into this: TOAW is alone worth like 10 of garbage games that they have in their catalogue.
It's interesting how someone see logic. It is logical for them to send press releases to Game Press (it's web site for game journalist) and in that case wargames ARE part of game business and there is no difference but when they price the game, they price TOAW at 40 US$ which doesn't have example into games industry. HPS is not model to follow. Let me get this thing straight, wargamers moan and ***** how wargames hobby is too small, there is no fresh blood but then they don't mind when their cronies Matrix charge for an old game 40 US$ (which in fact is price for new game). That is no way to bring fresh blood into this hobby. That's why I have stopped posting on wargaming Usenet ng because I don't have time to teach all those Matrix cronies lesson in logic. They were fast however to attack SES. Let them be, they can defend wrong principles as much as they want. I will support companies like SES with all my heart. In fact that is where innovation is.
Mario
EDIT: http://www.gamespress.com/
This is the web site that I was talking about. So why would just Matrix cronies (I love this word hahaha!) use it...
So, Norm and Jim, just a tip, you can send press releases and SCREENSHOT there and lot's of game journos will see it!!! I hope that you would find my advice useful. We cannot leave everything to Matrix Pepsico Corp. hehe.
Personally, there are lots of little things that have always irked me about the game, and I am glad that there is now another chance at getting a version that is more to my liking. I had already bought the game twice (TOAW1 and ACOW), and it's given me years of fun, mostly just by messing around with scenarios and playing against the AI... so why not invest a lil more to give it a new lease of life.

Yeah, but developers must have a vision. I very much doubt that they have a vision, would like to be proven wrong. I am talking about TOAW III developers...
TOAW is all about PBEM. That is it's magic... I have already proposed what could have been done to bring it to new, better level. That is dynamic control of ZOC's - so that division don't pay movement points to battalion so much like when division have pinned them.
OK, but most important, what I would do is good leader system. As AAR's are popular in TOAW that would be really cool. Something like HoI 2 but better and different. That could bring a good RPG flavor into TOAW. Now, you have infantry regiment, bland, all have 100 heavy rifle squads and there is no real attachment and difference between one or another. There should be some way to make it much more colorful.
That's certanly I would love to see in TOAW.
Mario
Oh I certainly agree with that... I would love to see something like that, and I have lots of ideas of my own... but I don't think it will be in TOAW as we know it. Perhaps in the long run, if they manage to realize their plans of moving the various parts of the game into an object oriented structure to facilitate a more flexible approach to redesigning certain parts... but for now, the game components seem far to tightly coupled to allows such drastic alterations. Meanwhile, I'm happy with what we are getting.

Yep... great! :D
Eh? Don't say things like that! Unless it's true, of course :p
I wonder what "Going Gold" means, in a game that is sold by download only. With games that are sold on CD it usually means they have the final "master" and will then duplicate it. In a case like this, do you thing Going Gold means it will be hurtling down the telephone lines pretty soon?
Cheers,

Greetings Storm Eagle Fans!
“I hear the mutter of distant guns, which call and call to me,
Singing: "Come! The day is here for which you have waited long."
From the poem Guns at Sea, Imtarfa, 1917.
The words of this great poem are so perfect for today! Storm Eagle Studios is proud to announce that our debut title, Distant Guns: The Russo-Japanese War at Sea, has gone GOLD, and will be available for sale on July 28th, 2006.
The release of this first installment marks the beginning of a new chapter in historical gaming! Built on the Next Gen 3D Distant Guns engine, The Russo-Japanese War at Sea delivers all the action you would expect from a top notch 3D simulation combined with all the detail you would expect from a serious historical simulation. The result is an engrossing blend of both that lets the gamer have as much or as little as they choose.
Jim Rose, Kapellmeister of Storm Eagle Studios, said “Our efforts have delivered very large dividends. We have labored long and paid very close attention to all the details. This combined with our new Direct Delivery System have resulted in a whole new approach to historical gaming. Distant Guns: The Russo-Japanese War at Sea is just the tip of the spear. In the coming months, we will be introducing exciting new titles, designed to deliver the ultimate in 3D gaming.”
Norm Koger, Maestro of Storm Eagle Studios, said “At long last, the Russo-Japanese War is receiving the treatment it deserves: a no-holds-barred, cinematic quality, play experience. As our first offering, Distant Guns: The Russo-Japanese War at Sea says a lot about the direction in which we plan to take computer wargaming over the next few years. So expect fresh, new topics, exotic names and places, and of course: the call of Distant Guns.

Halleluyah!
At last we shall see this beauty!
Wonder what the realistic system requirements will be, in order to play the game in all its graphic wonder. I suspect "Minimum Specs" won't be very helpful as a guide. Anybody got any inside info?
I think that only guys from StormEagleStudios know about Minimum Specs.Awaiting release.
It runs well on my 1.9 Ghz, 1 Gig Rm, old nVidea 128 MB system.
Do you know if the game requires any sort of pixel shader support in the 3d card?
I think its not require. It will be works witout shaders. The graphic in DG not to hard.

What is that?
And 5 dollars off what? What is the price?
The price is right and the time is nigh. Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition  I'm ready for action !
I have the same newsletter, it is good news indeed :D
Phil
(micky mouse marketing) Pricing?
I'm not sure it's good marketing, to offer $5.00 off this, $24.95 free that (you can't buy it without the campaign, can you?), yet have no price listed? Sounds like some bad late night TV add (buy now and we'll throw in a free set of ginzu steak knives, free for just $14.95 shipping)! :(
This would be like Matrix Games, saying Witp at $69.00 includes a free $30.00 editor, give me a break.
The offer does seem quite odd. If I am reading the newsletter right there is no stated price for the main game yet which I assume includes single missions and the campaign. We can download a trial version of it for free which will probably (I am guessing here) include a tutorial and at least 1 or 2 missions then we have to pay the full price to unlock the whole game. If we sign up early for the main game we get a $5 discount, but we also get a whole new expansion for the main games campaign that we have never heard of before ??? Quite why they would offer an expansion so early for free beats me and seems like financial suicide, but hey, if they want to give us a free expansion I am all for it :)

I can hardly wait for the copy protection
Excuse me for my english, but i think that you understand the meaning of the replic. The game will start to sale from 28 July, but i can`t find any information on the StormEagleStudios site.Maby its only somebode joke about date of release.
They are horribly slow/forgetful about updating the website, but they sent out a newsletter stating that it will be released on the 28th.
Yes, release will be at 28 July, but its also date of sell. I thought that demo must appear earlier.
That would be awesome (and by awesome, I mean totally sweet)... but I wouldn't count on it.
I`m interesting-there are many peoples would like to copy demo version from Storm site. What about connection speed. And maby demo version will be accessible not only at the Storm site?
Hi guys, some of you know how to buy it?
In the store link of the site there's only a pop up asking for user and password....but user and password for what that i haven't still buy it...?
Thx.
We assume that the store will be open at some time... you are using the correct link, but they are still working on the site.
Dogbert, you think its correct link?I think demo version will be accessible from the download link.
Oh yes, demo version from the download link... but to buy the full game I think you have to use the store... when it opens.
Oh yes, i`m agree with you.
I think that we may start countdown quickly. The time to 28 July has expired."To be or not to be".I`m tired to waiting release.
The problem is that is still 27....and the "store" link don't work :)
Yura - because of the difference in time zones you probably won't hear anything about a download until very late on the 28th in Russia. It is still early morning on the 27th in the US
Why in the meantime they don't put up online the demo?
Even if the store link and all that is behind (ssl, checkout...etc.etc.) is not ready...a simple link to a downloadable demo could be made....or not?
The Storm Eagle team and logic do not really go that well together.
I am just happy we are going to get something tomorrow (I hope) after 9 months of being told the game is just a few weeks away.
Our next battle can be trying to pry patches and new games out of them.
All they said yesterday was that the Trial/Demo version (I believe they are the same thing) would appear on popular download sites "over the next few days". I guess they will put up a list of mirror sites in the Downloads section when the demo is released, but no-one has any idea when that will be.
I do not think there will be a demo version.
My understanding is that the trial version is the battle of Ulsan and lasts something like 30 days.
There is an option to buy the game right from within the game.
I am guessing you can go ahead and buy the game outright as well and just download an unlocked version right away.
Only things im curious too are what is the price for the game and what in the hell is that 'expansion pack'?
I guess we will have to find that out tomorrow, at this point it would not suprise me in the least if tomorrow and the entire weekend went by and the website still has not changed a bit.
They have shown in the past that they have no problem with letting deadlines pass with no word from them on why or what a new deadline is.
My main concern is that they are not very experienced with or interested in website development, so that a problem in that department might take a long time to fix, for instance if they can't make get the online store to work. I do believe that they are slightly obsessed with doing everything themselves, instead of using off the shelf solutions or asking for help, even if it's outside their area of expertise.
I do not think there will be a demo version.
As I said above the trial/demo are the same thing. They actually call the 30 day release a "Trial Demo" on this page http://www.stormeaglestudios.com/public/html/se_downloads.html
I think the question was if the trial/demo would be the same executable as the full version, and all you have to do is purchase a key for it, or if they are two different programs entirely, and you have to download both separately.
I got the impression the trial demo included the full game which would only be unlocked on purchase of the key. This allows you to check if your system will run the game to your satisfaction without having to spend a lot of money up front.
There also appears to be a version of the full game which you can buy immediately if you are confident your system will run the game.
The only question now is: Will the Storm Eagle Studios web be able to handle the downloads?
Guess I'm in a pessimistic mood... I see plenty of questions :p
Maby somebody from StormEagleStudios will appear on forum and we can receive any information. There are so many questions and we can only surmise in answer on them.
What I can't figure out is that despite the long time between the initial announcement, last year, and this eventual release, Stormeagle doesn't actually seem to have said much substantial about the game, what it can do, and the stuff naval wargamers would tend to want to know about. There has been a REALLY hard sell on how brilliant it is, "The Boys Being Back in Town", how interesting the revolutionary engine is, the fact that it focuses on a neglected subject and is therefore special, but does anybody actually know anything at all about the blinking thing, apart than it's pretty. It may be really fantastic, and I'll wait to see what people make of it, but there has been very little of the sort of information that you get from a lot of developers. So far, all we seem to know is that it's "amazing". Anybody know any more? It's Norm Koger, so it'll be good, doesn't quite do it for me. I hope it's going to be as brilliant as everyone hopes, but I still feel a little in the dark. We don't really know anything even about price or copy protection, or what happens if you decide to play offline, and the automatic reference to the homepage can't be made, or even why it should be made at all. Sorry if I'm hopelessly confused.
I agree... actually the rah rah is a big turnoff for me... seems very unprofessional, especially when you contrast their lofty claims with the low update frequency and slightly amateurish website.
The whole thing is really frustrating because it seems to be a totally amazing game, but how is it going to sell if they keep this up?
I am not so bothered by all the razzmatazz on the DG website as I am by the sheer lack of updates on the content and mechanics of the game since April and the fact that they could not be bothered to implement community forums on their own website. Community forums can act like free PR if they are done correctly and have enough forum sections to cater for all interests. They really need some help on the PR front as trying to do everything in-house is already proving to be quite counter productive and simply looks amateurish.

Did you sign up for their newsletter? Got one two days ago saying it is for sale the 28th. A copy is included:

The trial version of Distant Guns: The Russo-Japanese War at Sea should appear on your favorite file download sites over the next few days. Try the game out, and let us know what you think. We look forward to hearing from you.
