BRUSILOV OFFENSIVE 1916

Todd Klemme

Version 1.0

Date: June 4, 1916
Map Scale: 20km per hex
Time Scale: One Week Turns
Unit Scale: Divisions
Formation Scale: Armies
First Turn: Russians
Length: 13 Turns

The scenario can be found at: Brusilov 1916 (http://www.wargames.warfarehq.com/forums/showthread.php?t=199)

The 1916 Russian offensive, planned and commanded by Russia's best general in The First World War, Alexai Brusilov, was meant to be a supporting attack for the main 1916 offensive against the German army. The main offensive was never launched, but Brusilov's attack became Russia's most successful operation of the war. It would also lead to her eventual defeat.

I played this scenario as the Central Powers with Sheik Yerbouti taking the Russians. After 13 hard fought turns the game ended in a draw.

I've attached a quick map of the game. I think both of us enjoyed this scenario because it was very well balanced. Although the game doesn't have a lot of turns or units, if you don't carefully think about the placement of each unit, you could be in for trouble. Each unit makes a difference!

Our game started with the Russians attacking along the entire front. After a few turns, my center was blown almost wide open. However, I'd decided to let it get opened up, closing it with reinforcments from the north and south as the game progressed. By turn 7 or so, I was able to mount a strong counter-attack from the north, shore up the middle, and secure the southern part of my line.

I had hopes of really pushing the Russians back in the north, but my plans hit reality. Fearing that high casualities would throw the game into a Central Power defeat, I called off the attacks and fought for a draw.

What makes this scenario a winner:

The turns can be played quickly - 15 to 20 minutes
Each side gets a chance to attack
The balance is great

I'd recommend this to everyone as a great way to fill the slots between the monster scenarios!
