I have looked through the manual and can not find the answer to this one.

A game I currently have going at the moment my opponent sent back return move along with the question of.......

"how did you close assault my calvary? I thought you couldn't do that when they were on horse back??"

My initial thought was you can't. Then I got to thinking in another game the same thing had happened to me. So I set up a test remembering that in both occasions the mounted cavalry had been in the same hex as infantry in line. Tried meleeing with infantry and low and behold the melee occured and won.

Is this due to other units other than cavalry in the same hex negating the effect of the cavalry being mounted??

Yes, that is correct...to prevent the melee from anything but other mounted cav you must keep them in their own hex.

I have also found that you can melee attack isolated Mounted Cavalry with Infantry.
