View Full Version : When did this game start looking so good?

I found out about this game last fall and have kept an eye on it since then, however by the start of the year it fell out of my memory and I only recently have picked back up on its development.
And wow, I must say the game looks 500% better since I last saw it.
Not only graphicaly (I will touch on that latter) but the entire game looks like more detailed and looks like a wargame that will actualy be intuitive to play.
The interface and 'pop outs' look like an inspired idea and are something wargames despertaly need.
And then there are the graphics. At first I could hardly believe this was a hardcore wargame. The ships looks almost as good as SHIII and the water does not look half bad either (SHIII takes the cake for water graphics as well, maybe if you asked nicely UBI Soft would let you borrow them :p )
When I first saw the game it looked like the 3-D engine was typical wargame fare in the sense that is looked like it was tossed out there to try and be 'different'. The polygons were few and the textures looked very drab.
But now! I must say everything looks first rate and looks like it game from a big time company with years of 3-D experience.
That is as high of a compliment as I can give.

About the only worry I have with the game is just how fresh the gameplay will be knowing the outcome.
The Russians even on paper never had much of a chance and were completly worked over by the Japanese.
Some scenarios are going to have to be historicaly liberal in order to make them interesting.

But to get to my point. Very nice work so far and this is yet another title I am looking forward too.
Maybe it is just me, but this summer looks to be the best season for wargaming that I can yet remember in my young life.

I also have one question I hope can be answered.
When the game says 'any resolution is supported'
Does that really mean any or just up to 1600x1200?
And does that include widescreen rezs?
My screen native rez is 1900x1200
Is it possible to model the 3-D world in this rez?

There is no game limit on resolution. None. If your system reports to DirectX that it has the resources to handle a given resolution, you are allowed to select it. The only caveat here is that you need to be aware of the limits of your hardware and drivers. It is not at all uncommon for drivers to report very high resolutions, anti-alias capabilities, etc. without taking into account that the hardware can't actually hit all of the targets at the same time. That is one reason many 3d games impose arbitrary limits - to avoid customer service calls when gamers try to exceed the actual capabilities of their systems. In Distant Guns, we decided to allow you to select anything your drivers report as possible. If this causes problems, you can always back down a bit. I generally play at 1600x1200, 32 bit, with 4x anti-aliasing.

I am running an AMD 4000+ OCed to 2.78 GHZ
Two Gefore 7800 GTX cards running in SLi
2 GB of LL Ram
Three HDD in Raid 0

I do not see frame rates being a problem.
I should get some postcard quality screenshots with a game as pretty as this :) and a rez that high

Do any of your testers have an SLi capable system to ensure the game has no weird graphical errors?

Thanks. One of my pet peeves (in any field of endeavor) is being held to the level of the lowest common denominator, rather than being allowed to reach and set my own limits based on my own abilities.

So when will we be able to order the game? :D

That's a manly man system there. :smoke:

That's a good question. I don't know. In theory, DirectX and drivers take care of that kind of thing transparently. To the API, an SLi rig looks the same as any other. In fact, (I was curious, so I just checked) a search through the online DirectX 9 documentation for "SLI" produces no hits.

Send me a copy and I will test it all you want ;)
