Q: When the C.S.A. Congress authorized recruitment of volunteers in May 1861, how many were wanted?
Let's see . . . to use Confederate math, since Lincoln asked the northern states for 75,000 volunteers early on, and since the Rebs considered one reb could whup ten yankees . . . that means they would have sought to enlist about 7,500 men, plus maybe ten or twenty for good measure.

Confederate Congress wanted 100,000.
That's correct, 100,000 for six and twelve month enlistments.
Some info on Conscription for both sides through out the War.
