View Full Version : "Cost of Glory" Rd THREE CMAK Tourney
The battle for Olympus Pass is about to begin!
Stand by for further details.
We're down (or up now as is the case) to not 14 but 15 of the original 22 players. :crosseye:
What do the remaining players want to go with this mirrored round: POD's or 1 vs 1 matches? We can still do 1:1 but with 1 POD.
The round will start Friday June 9th.
No beaches to invade but plenty of rocks.:p
1 vs. 1 is the easiest and best way to proceed with just 14 (or similar even number) playing.
Rd3 Matchups
Take your pick either the POD or 1:1 format.
1. Boff / Full Monty / Gunner-C
2. Joebob / RangerBooBoo / Tripps
3. Bruce / Magoo/ Triaxe
4. NiG / Victor Charlie / KG-Panther
5. 2054172 / Doodlebug / KG-Jag
Boff vs Full Monty
Gunner-C vs Joebob
RangerBooBoo vs Tripps
Bruce vs Magoo
Triaxe vs NiG
Victor Charlie vs KG-Panther
1 POD
2054172 / Doodlebug / KG-Jag
There has been no contact with BigMik1, if he pipes in by WED we'll have 16 & still go with either format.
That's the last time I express my preference!:(
Well I did just go "down" the POD list to get 1:1's for simplicity, and to make sure no one was repeating a match vs the same opponent yet.
But if we go that way I'll randomize which group remains in the POD. :)
If so why change it? Or is it a POD of 1:1?:smoke:
Well... maybe just for a change of pace & variety. :D
But it looks like we'll stay with the POD's due to the odd # of players.
However- This time all side one setup files will be sent to me & I will send them on as a group once I get all 3 opponents initial files. That way the POD starts out even. Players will have 1 week for the Axis setup, though it's fairly straight forward. The Allied setup on the other hand is quite "involved" and may take a week to do... :halo:
If you enjoyed the gullys and hiding behind the slopes in SoHR or like to get down & dirty & play from level one you'll "enjoy" Rd3. :whist:

Is this some kind of KG inspired plot to sow unrest in the ranks of 'Monty's Mob' (formerly known as 'Boff's Bandits' )?

See above: this time we're on your side!
Hey Monty did your beard grow that long waiting for our TST opponents to process & return their game files??

Yes, and not just the beard!!:bite:
Sorry to hear that you folks and your TST opponents have such a dysfunctional relationship. Nig's boys and mine are into turn 38 in our game.

Good.:)
Ours has been a deeply frustrating experience which is showing little sign of improving.
With 15 players we're going with these POD's.
1. Boff / Full Monty / Gunner-C
2. Joebob / RangerBooBoo / Tripps
3. Bruce / Magoo/ Triaxe
4. NiG / Victor Charlie / KG-Panther
5. 2054172 / Doodlebug / KG-Jag
I will be getting the files to you soon, it will be the AX setup.
Read all the information & briefings sent as special scenario notes are included throughout.
Most important note- all Axis setup files MUST be sent to ME not your Allied opponent. I will hold them until I have all Ax setup files for your POD then I will send them on at one time.
You will have 1 week to get the German setup done although they should not take but a few hours... or day to complete. The real "fun" & tactical skill will come with the New Zealand setup, thats when you'll need the week. :whist:

I've just had a quick look and both the map and the briefings look superb Kerry, well done
A great looking map indeed. Looking forward to both fights.:bandit:
Truly impressive map!
And kinda skeery....
First move is out.
Thanks, I hope you like it even more when I post the FULL map that I designed when I thought this was going to be a morning battle (no fog).
Further research however just showed morning recon & no real action / opportunities. But that map was designed for a 60+ turn scenario in mind.
Just a note- your allied setup now goes to your opponent not me!
Good Hunting.
The Round is off & running (well 3/5ths anyway). :)
Good Luck to everyone!
Kerry,
My German troops are feeling a bit nervous here. They were promised thick fog, but instead they've got lines of sight of more than 600m. Is the weather likely to change? :OHNO:
The weather is set at "fog" which does allow @600m of LOS. It will not change. Some "Thick Fog" tests revealed to be too constrictive to the defenders. Reports were that normal visibility in the Pass was cut in half not totally obscured, much to the relief of the NZ'ers.

Any news on my pod and when we're going to get started? The delay is starting to reach the point where my short term memory loss is stretching out to meet the long term memory loss with the result that I can't remember what the heck I was planning to do.

Kerry has my setup file.
And you are......?
See! told you this would happen.
:hmmm:
Lets see, Doodlebug & KG-Jag's files are in, now who's file are we still missing?
I'm thinking of a number... :whist:

But I barely know her.
But I barely know her.
Just to make up for it Wayne I'll send the POD your PW so they won't have to wair for your responses! :p
Although... it sounds like David is happy with just the gift you're sending him!
On turn 24 w/RangerBooBoo, and doing my best to take Petra as Axis. Boy is that town in BAD shape!
On turn 17 w/Tripps. Petra is once again the site of intense combat with lots of artillery raining down everywhere most of which (hopefully) is landing on those Axis boyz...
A note: in play tests vs the Allied AI it did a wonderful job of defending Petras and with startling timing & accuracy using it's Arty. It shut down the entire area.
Not to mention the occassional AT gun ripping thru a tank or halftrack! Youch!!!
We are also experiencing intense mini-battles for Point 702 in both games.
Update: 3 games have finished.
Allies 3-0:
Major-1
Tactical-1
Minor-1
Any word on the others- how are they going?
Recently Dave (Doodlebug) and I completed our two mirrored contests set in Greece. We ended up with the Allies achieving a major and a minor victory.
Is there an emerging, if not surprising trend here?!
Thanks to Dave, who is both a quality person and CM player!
Full Monty and I have about another 5 turns to go and it's looking like a mould-breaking German victory. Unfortunately GunnerC appears to have dropped out, neither of us has heard from him for a couple of months..

Did anyone inform me about this? :o

Ah.. :OHNO:
Possibly not, sorry Kerry
Anyone else had problems with bogging as the Germans? I've had two Pz IIIs bog and go immobile in the rough stuff off road, and then this Pz IV which bogged and then went immobile on the road! I know one track is slightly on the verge but I still can't believe I lost the use of one of my two precious Pz IVs so easily..
I had a Pz II bog on the road for a short time. Three Pz III's bogged off road with one going immobile and another remaining bogged at games end. My opponent, Doodlebug had a Pz III bog or made immobile on the road. I also had a HT immobilize on the road near my set-up zone.
Overall I was surprised that I did not have more problems.

Yeah I had a PzIV bog and immobilize on a road as well!
both games are over now.
the game with Tripps ended with an Allied OV because he chose to capitulate on T17.
and the game with RangerBooBoo ended at 40 turns with an Allied minor victory as my last ditch attempt to capture the big flag above Petra simply ran out of time (darn, thought i had em!!!)
here are some thoughts about the scenario that i e-mailed to Kerry earlier...
"Fun game, although a LOT of work in the early turns. I think it would have more playable for tourney if it was about half the size."
"Looks like the Allies have the advantage in this one. Don’t know the full historical context, but if the NZ'ers didn't have a lot of time to dig in, then you might want to eliminate or limit the trenches, and the cement MG pillboxes (maybe wood instead?) Maybe reduce the force levels too, as line after line of dug-in infantry make for some SLOW going. :-) You can also make an argument that heavy weapons like AT guns wouldn't have been able to set up in the steeper sections of terrain. I know some of the ones I placed in my game as Allies had to have been helicopter'd in! ;-)"
all in all though, an intense gaming experience especially toward the end with the frantic rush for flags, and some fun breakthroughs with some of my Pz II's.
The historical context is accurate, the ONLY thing that didn't happen was: the Germans attacked. It was called off at the last minute.
For tourney play (as explained in the briefing) the setups areas were changed to allow players freedom so everyone did not have exactly the same setups (units, dispositions etc). The NZ'ers were dug-in (in detail with time to do it right) so that had to be modified for the tourney.
The terrain was modified for game play but the "overall" flow is correct. And with the terrain as rugged as it is I suspect some unique locations were found for those NZ ATG's! (But they did have the time to lug them around piecemeal & put them back together).
As far as "half the size:" as I noted the map is already 1/2 the actual size I designed for the battle. But the weather & LOS determined the final map size. (But man, I love the original full MONSTER map!!!)
The scenario could have been (could be) 2 seperate scenarios however: there was absolutely no feeling what-so-ever of the HUGE undertaking the NZ'ers were asked to handle when taken seperately. The few units on-hand to defend that entire stretch & the desperation they felt I determined required that it be played as one long undertaking. Historically the Germans would have had about 4 hours of daylight left to take the ridges so the pressure they are under to take them is heightened via turn limitations.
And- there is always a trade-off with tourneys & how long players will stay around to complete them.
<(But man, I love the original full MONSTER map!!!)>
And just where could one find that monster map....? :whist:
Safely tucked away on my PC, for now.
I need to update it to match the smaller scenario I sent out for the tourney.
What's happening with this tourney now that Palantir has left us? The other two members of my pod appear to have bailed out, how many are left playing now, and when, if ever, will round 4 commence?

I suspect there's been a foul up somewhere in the points awarded in round 3. Looking at some of them they add up to more than 100% which is a clear no-no. Have ladder points been entered rather than the final % split?
Dave is correct--ladder points and tournament points are apples and oranges. The ladder has a handicapping system built in. That should have nothing to do with points awarded in head-to-head tournament play.

There is a small problem with the points.
Thats why I sent out an email a few weeks ago asking for the % points of all who had finished rnd3.
As far as i can tell it's the Boff V Fullmonty and Magoo V Triaxe that i need.

I still have the file but can't for the life of me remember the password, I did send the full result to Palantir at the time..

I have exactly the same problem. If Kerry can remind me of the password I'm in business.
Dave, a couple weeks ago I sent Dan the results of our games .

Good work. Don't suppose I could persuade you to lend me a few percent governor? Family and tournament to support.

Guess you haven't heard about the drought down here in central Texas.
If someone needs the passwords for their game please email me as I still have them. :)
Good Hunting!
What's the status of the games still underway?
The fourth round scenario is still on the books to be played.
