Can someone give me a few tips on how it works when you have units building breastworks? Do units automatically build breastworks when nothing else is going on or must you manually order this in each situation?

How do you know when they are completed? Do they show up as an icon on the maps?

Can they be built on multiple hex facings? For example, if I build them facing north, can I about face and also build south-facing ones without losing the north-facing ones?

Once built are they permanent or do they vanish once the building unit leaves the hex?

I can't find much about breastworks in the documentation, other than the fact that they can be built.

All right, lots of things here.

First of all, to build breastworks, you need an infantry or Cav unit in line formation that has spent no MP that turn. You toggle "build breastwork" (it's on the top icon bar, looks like a tiny split rail fence). From that point, the units will build a breastwork on the hex directly in front of them. It can take a variable number of turns. At the beginning of each turn, you can look at the command report and it will tell you what units built them. You can then "turn" a unit and build on another facing if you want.

Also, they are persistant, the'll last as long as the battle does. Now, the last point, I'm not 100% positive of, but as memory serves, they only exist on "one side" of the hexline. In other words, if you build a breastwork, you're behind it, but the guy on the *other* side of it gets no benefit.

On the map, they'll show up as a darker line on the hexline (in 2d, I don't play 3D, so I don't recall how they look)

3D looks like logs and sand bags, etc. stacked together. It's a small image, so it's seen better in zoom in.

Thanks for your efforts Gary!! :salute:

Thanks a lot for the help guys. I didn't know what I was looking for, but I'll check next time I play for the darker hex lines (I too find myself using 2D most of the time). If I don't see the darker line maybe I can just fiddle with my resolution a little bit to see it better.

While we are on the subject of breastworks can anyone answer my question.

My men are in the process of making breastworks. The enemy is moving in and therefore I want to abandon the construction of the breastwork and retreat my men. Is it possible to have my men cancel construction so that I can retreat them? I have found out that firing at an enemy unit cancels construction of breastwork. But I have been able to cancel construction otherwise.

Vangse,

Select the unit and go back to the menu, selecting "make breastworks" again, and this will toggle the process off. You will also have full movement points for that unit.
