What would be the western counterpart to the SU-35 in term of capability and mission types?

If we are speaking of near-term aircraft, I think that the EF-2000 Eurofighter is likely probably similar in role.

The F/A-18 E/F is also a possibility, but I think that the range of the Hornet is somewhat shorter. It still carries a variety of weapons to fulfill the multi-role requirement, though.

Rafale might be a good French equivalent.

The Su-35 never entered service as intended. The technology items destined for it where instead used on the Su-27SM (modernised aircraft for the RuAF) and on the various export Su-30xxx variants.

The closest western equivalent would be the up-engined F-15E, or the F/A-18E/F.

Airframes such as Rafale or EF-2000 represent a leap forward in aerodynamics, LO, materials & avionics/weapons integration that is hard to match by squeezing out the potential of the Su-27 design. (Ditto for the F-22).
