I'm using the new interface mods like a few other people, and I just happen to have a picture handy to show you:
This is Kiev Soviet defenses in an FitE game that's ongoing:

Thanks for the pic Larry. I think I might just try these out, all the roads, rivers, railroads are so clearly defined. Pretty I must say. Do both players have to have them installed for a pbem?
Do both players have to have them installed for a pbem?
No. Definitely no. Definitely a post with more than 10 characters...
Here's a screenie from the Rasca interface mod from Rugged Defence. You also can take a look at it here (http://www.the-strategist.net/RD/docs/mod/index.php)
In the Rasca mod, as well as in the mod Larry is using, the 2D counters have been made with less rounded corners than they are in TOAW. Why? I always found that the clean, rounded shape of the counters was a positive factor. I haven't played many other wargames (as I found TOAW first and therefore have no need for any other wargame :) ) but the few I did play had ugly, chunky, clutered looking counters. Personnaly I thought Talonsoft hit the nail on the head with their counters.
On the the other hand, I love the look of the Rasca mod. That metallic look is sweet. Is there any way to take the mod, btu not the counter change?
[edit]
Also, the railways and roads are nicely marked out in the mod Larry is using. Are there any mods that only replace the roads/rails, or is there a way I can d/l a mod and only grab the parts I like?:)

Hey Larry
As a complete fan of your AAR's i was to tell you this for a long time...
The mod terrain you use is... acceptable (on the limit)... but the units icons are terrible (i think they are dangerous to be shown to noobies... they might think those are the standard toaw graphics...which are not perfect as we all know)
Please don't consider this as offense... just a possible expression of my bad taste...

I'm with Veers on this one. I like the hex shaped counter too, maybe it's nostalgia from first playing the game back in 98. Having not played for about 5yrs and seeing all these innovations is sure interesting to say the least. The reason I like the mod is because on big maps I like to use the 2d small mode and it's a pain in the but to try and eyeball, rail, roads, bridges, etc. Or should I just get glasses? :crosseye:

I congratulate you on even being able to play on 2D small. Although, now that I look at a scenario through it, it does give a nice overview of things, but to play on it, it would be extraordinarily difficult, especially, with, like you said, roads and rail. And I'm a twenty year old with damn good sight, I don't think it's you; better road/rail graphics would help all of us out at 2D small. :)
On the the other hand, I love the look of the Rasca mod. That metallic look is sweet. Is there any way to take the mod, btu not the counter change?
I don't like the edged counters from the Rasca mod, too. Just did a quick install over my toaw-cw demo to give you guys a screenie.
It is possible to have the mod without the counter change, or to have the counters from the mod without the metallic look or to only use Rasca's font etc. etc.
The mod is simply replacing bitmap files in the graphics directory of toaw-cw. When you download the mod and you open the zip file you can decide which graphic files you want to have extracted into the graphics folder and which ones not. You even can take the blue TOAW2 style, rascas counters and the railway graphics larry is using. Mix it at will... But be aware that the original files will be replaced and that you need the cd to reinstall them or save the original graphics somewhere.
Also, the railways and roads are nicely marked out in the mod Larry is using. Are there any mods that only replace the roads/rails, or is there a way I can d/l a mod and only grab the parts I like?
Yes. Have a look at the ressources->download section at TDG http://www.tdg.nu/indexdownload.html
...why am i doing this?
Hey those mods are very nice. I think you guys just convinced me to download one. Now I just need my FitE opponent to reappear :upset:

I just installed this on the demo to see how it looks, pretty cool if I say so myself :smoke:
I have to admit, that JMass's mods are the best that I've seen. And this is coming from a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" purist. They are crisp, clean, and don't suffer from the garish look that so many other mods end up with.
LoL...where were you when we were recruiting for the TOAW III project? S'okay, TOAW III will easily support aftermarket graphics mods. I may have to install this one myself...soon!

My english is not so good to explain exactly what I want to say, so I am a better reader than writer. I have put my TOAW-COW away 'till a few months ago to play only Panzer Campaigns, The Campaign Series, Squad Battles, Steel Panthers, Total War and some FPS because my pbem's friends don't love it. Now I am studying the TOAW system and I am playing agaist the PO e by email (I play also using a mini-toaw of 120 MB on a usb pen!*) and I prefer it over Panzer Campaigns, so I have modified the interface to my personal taste, glad if you like my effort.

Tried JMoss's mod graphics in one game, smallish scenario - really nice and 'clean' impression, but maybe maybe the green was a bit too shiny. I will try some of the monsters this weekend (Mario, Foggy) and then switch back immediately to the old servant to compare...
Can one have two different TOAW folders on the computer, fully loaded with all necessary files, to be able to switch mods according to mode, without having to copy/rename folder etc? Any quick answers, or I will try it come weekend.
Yeah it's pretty easy. Just make a back up copy of the originals somewhere on your hard drive, insert the mods into the graphic folder in the game directory and just switch the whole folder back and forth at your leisure, thats what I did

That's what has been discussed, but not tried.. You can create a copy of the toaw registry keys and carry it with you on that USB stick, change the drive letter accordingly to the drive letter for the USB on the system you would like to play and add your modified registry to the registry of the system you plug your stick in. Something like that? It's worth trying..
Rasmus, maybe tomorrow. How big is your usb? you don't really need those "3D" graphics..

Instead of switching the whole folder back and forth, you should be able to just set the Windows desktop shortcut properties to target the appropriately nested executable.

That should do it thanks, then I could even rename the two separate icons: Winning Game for Dicke and Losing Game for Dicke, and I could pick JMass's for the former and the original murrier for the latter! :cheeky:

I like the lighter green, since it allows the cropland terrain to stand out somewhat from clear. In vanilla TOAW, the two are sometimes very hard to tell apart. In TOAW III, the cropland terrain will go back to costing +1 MP's, as per the CoW manual, so being able to readily distinguish between the two is not such a trivial matter as it is in CoW.

The size of my next USB stick will be decided by this thread;) .
My wish is to play the TOAW directly from the stick without installing anything on the computer at all. The computer just delivers the neccessary hardware (screen, keyboard, mouse) the rest should be run from the stick.
If I have to lose some TOAW graphic functions to play it off the stick so be it.
It must be able to run off XP ME and any other windows program with plug and play.

Gosh, with the prices of the thing (a 1GIG for about $60-65) that should be more than enough. And, with the 2-4Gig models out, it just gives more room.
I have one for my job that has a Windows PE OS for troubleshooting/repairing broken PC/servers. Its WAY faster than a HDD, and holds far more than a CD. With the 4GIG model, its coperable to a DVD. I also have a 512MB one for college work, holds the resume, several address spreadsheets, contact info, etc. the wife has one that has nothing but MP3's of albums that she plays on her PC at work (it has no CD to play music). Ain't technology great???
I read on one of the Linux boards that some are now even loading Linux images onto them. I look forward when I can do the same for Winders - imagine- your own PC that hangs about your neck.... All you need is a host machine that can run it...

Rasmus, with the current TOAW-Century of Warfare this is not possible, it won't run without the registry entries on the comp. So, no toaw at work ;) ...just the demo, it should work . Maybe a modified exe with bioEd will, i don't know..
At least until JMass teaches us something different...
...or Ralph tells us something about TOAWIII.

I know squat about the technicalities, but it should be doable as it has been done with other programs such as Open office and mail clients, browsers and so on.
It seems to me that these guys are on that track.

Correct, however it is simple adding the registry entries in a new pc: you must copy the toaw directory patched to 1.04 and no-cd on a usb pen, if you have 128 MB you can save space leave out sounds files, docs and some graphic files as the 3D files if you use only 2D (as I usually do). Then you must write with notepad (copy + paste the following lines) in a text file:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\TalonSoft\The Operational Art of War, CW]
"cd_path"="F:\\TOAW-CW\\nocd\\"
"game_path"="F:\\toaw-cw"
and save the file named toaw.reg on the pen. When you plug the pen in a new pc see the letter it assign to the pen, if it is different from F: , p.e. G:, open the file toaw.reg (click right -> Modify), change F with G and save it. To adding the registry entries click two times on toaw.reg -> Yes. Done. Attention: to delete the entries you must do it manually using the windows registry editor (regedit), remember that you must pay extreme attention when you are working with regedit.
That's what has been discussed, but not tried.. I like to play Panzer Campaigns in 3d mode so I would like have a nice 3d graphic also in TOAW. I have some ideas to have that...

:D No, really. I play in 3D mode and I am used to it since TOAW I. I know that majority of players plays in 2D mode but to each his own I guess.
Also, this is not full 3D anyway.

JMass, I'm embarassed to stand here with a pitiful bouqet of early summer flowers, but you're truly worth a lot of praise. As much effort that has gone into the reshaping of this game by a lot of volunteers, I think your effort will be so extremely valuable for the continued life of TOAW as it so enhances the playing experience. I always did wonder how many copies had been sold of TOAW; I willl wonder too how many of the new copies sold are due to your genial and fresh packaging, to the benefit of us all! It is really the dot above the i (I think this is an expression in most languages). :salute:
JMass, I'm embarassed..
You? :surprise: I'm embarassed! :shy:
OK guys, let's not turn this club into an online dating service.

Uahhahah...great!! Not that i'd play in iso 3d, but... What i always found most annoying in toaw iso3d were the hills and mountains and the cities. Your forests look real good! What software do you use?
I use The GIMP, Here (http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html) is the windows version (it is open source and I use it also on Linux).

Never heard of that before, was just pure curiosity. Go on by all means!
Bring out the Gimp! :gas:

Great, I like the woods very much... looking forward to this mod very much!
Will railroads will be different or? I play FiTE so it's hard to see what railroads are broken and what are ok but again it must be fused ok into graphics so to not make uglier picture...

Coming from WiR, TOAW opened new doors for me.
The smaller scale "Soviet Union 1941" scenario is a doozy. Without knowing all the fine details of the game's mechanics I let my panzers roll east like a wild uncoordinated posse. By September I had captured Leningrad and Moscow... the AI doesn't put up a good challenge in this one.
I've already been messin' around with the GUI.
My personal mod is a compilaton of what's available. I prefer the fatter raillines with narrow ones showing damaged rail, and the specific border outline...
The cursors was my own idea. The same color but the ones showing units of the same formation are "chopped up" using a pic editor.

Small mod: made the frontline borders a bit more visible... by making it dashed lines ;)

Another small graphic mod: airfields with a reddish tint.

I put a zipfile in the downloads section, containing the revised gui and map mods I use on my copy of TOAW III

Funny, I'm using the exact same red airfield.
The original is too hard to spot.
I've also changed the national border to a thick, fat red one.

I made the red airfield and dashed borders in my file. Other stuff are "modded" mods and a collection of the best of various mods. Thanks to the respective authors :) but please don't shoot me,:upset: I can't recall what came from which mod...
I don't need to see the terrain as background in the unit panel, sometimes it obscures the text of unit info. That's why I went for the black background...
I added my terrain mod to the download section. It's a variant of the classic toaw look mixed with original and manipulated graphics from the various other mods. Click here (http://www.strategyzoneonline.com/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=1194).

Nice  I use the rivers, roads and railroads. They're very clear...
I made a small change myself... the frontlines were still not clear enough to me... I made the blue ones red making for a thinner or thicker frontline (if you play with "no borders")
You'll have to forgive me if this has been posted before but I want to reiterate it as I think it would be a great interface addition.
With the great importance of artillery; I wish there was a setting that would highlight the hexes within range of an artillery unit when you click on that unit and make it current.
Possibly set it up so that the unit's longest range tubes would highlight all hexes pink (or light yellow); the next longest tubes range would highlight a light red (or orange); and the next tubes range (if there is one) could be red (red). If there was only one equipment type it would only highlight pink (or yellow).
Its tedious but managable to determine where an arty unit is best placed. Having a highlight option for this one type of equipment would go a long way to improving a players planning.

That would be a good idea.
Updated my terrain mod. The irritating blue dots that appeared in the black, unplayable hexes have been deleted.

it is easy to create specific reg file depending on your drive letter, and register them dding of your configuration
here is my toaw.reg file
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\TalonSoft]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\TalonSoft\The Operational Art of War, CW]
"cd_path"="H:\\TOAW-CW\\nocd\\"
"game_path"="H:\\TOAW-CW"
and my second one toaw2.reg
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\TalonSoft]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\TalonSoft\The Operational Art of War: Century of Warfare]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\TalonSoft\The Operational Art of War: Century of Warfare\1.00]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\TalonSoft\The Operational Art of War: Century of Warfare\1.04]
using the the inverse click on the file name use the register option
That's all
Der WanderTechSupport
What would the corresponding registry look like for TOAW III?

Been messing around with and got inspired by the bright yellow cursors in Goran Wickstrom's graphics mod.
Can be handy in scenarios with high unit density.
