View Full Version : What Happened To The -no Disc- Download???
HI, poundr here, and I'm curious as to what happened to the download where one could start without having a disc in the cd drive.
In other words, where is the 'no disc' patch??
It's just that my disc is getting so scratchy and old, that I fear the day when it will not start up!
Any info appreciated!
Mr Poundr.

Ah so! :yummy: Me be very thankful!
One question. Is there a history of this patch making things difficult, (meaning some scenarios stop working, this happened to my laptop, but I also had the 'final version' downloaded and installed at the same time, and it's an xp with not a great ammount of memory...
Unfortunately I lost the zip's, and now I spend a lot of time at my friends, and her pc has win 98, I put in the 04 toaw acow patch, and all scenarios, including downloaded ones have worked fine. Just some very large ones have not, and this machine has limited memory, but it's back to the great days where combat loss screens didnt dissappear, or one didnt have to restart a new scenario window four times to get to the game one wanted to play...
So, have you heard anything about the no cd??? Just curious...
Thanks again!
And by the way, does the modern exe, only fire up when you want to, or are you stuck with it forever once you fire the zip up?
I shure like the idea of Sam efficiency made greater. Also what is with the ww2 start up, with strange lineups of units???
And lastly, anybody for a game of medium size, with possibly post ww2 action??? arround 25-35 moves??? And can you recommend a scenario???

From my experience, which has swung from utter dismay to complete satisfaction, I can tell you that results will vary, depending upon which patch you get (yes, there are different versions of the no-cd patch), and depending on what OS you try it on.
If you are lucky enough to have an original TOAW"ACOW cd, then it should install and run fine on factory settings on win98 thru win2000. If you have an XP system, you may have to set properties to emulate 98 mode or 2000 mode. All I can say is, sometimes that works, sometimes not, depending on which WIN operating system you have, and how it has been upgraded, which vid drivers are onboard, etc.
Now, on to the patch.....there are (to my knowledge) have been three different no-cd patch fixes for TOAW:ACOW......on for 98, one for 2K/NAT, and one very recent for XP+.......you need the one for your particular OS (I'm assuming that is XP, so you need the most recent patch....PM me and I can email it to you if you can't find it on wargamer.....its tough to find :=-) at least it was tought for me........
Hopefully all will be solved with the Matrix Edition (AND SOON!!!!!!)))))
Cheers!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, never knew about that, too. But from my experience the nocd patch from the toaw site/szo works on my notebook, it runs with a fresh installed xp without service pack 2. A friend of mine never brought toaw to run on his computer under xp (doesn't matter - he's more in Civ).

..i put the original no-cd on disc, i'm now running cd-less toaw in xp, fully up-to-date, but in Win 98 compatablity
..no problems
Thanks to you guys I found it, and have it under wraps, and have it running on my laptop, my bin pc still needs the now very worn disc (I'm afraid that it will become too worn one day, and thus the need for a no disc option, unless the talk about toaw-3 mean a new game is coming to the shops).
I also use the disc on my friend machine where I have also installed toaw on her pc incase I get the urge while I'm there... She has win-98, and boy does the 1.04 patched up toaw run smoothly on her machine!
Scrolling anything is relaxed as no 'runaway casualty lists' ect occur!
Unlike on win-xp.
Anybody know about the new Macintosh, which can run (alledgedly) any windows program, although it's a mac op system, not a dual mac-pc!
This sounds like heaven to me!!!
Oh, and anybody have any info on the games from matrix called: 'desicive battles, europe' and there is 'Normandy' and 'Italy'. They had Normandy in one shop in finland arround last Christmas, but I missed it by a couple of days, and it was sold out, and I called the importer and they never call for a new batch of strategy games as they have calculated the number of strat gamers in Finland, and order accordingly, strange as it was out of stock, and at least I hadnt got my copy!!!
Anyway, are they as good as they look??? And, why oh why doesnt the matrix games site take my friends visa card, even when I can pay for my ACG subscription with it, or order from amazon.com?
Thanks for any info,
mr poundr.
