View Full Version : Have you ever played with technology trading turned off?

I'm experimenting with this now. One of the things I find annoying is that, with a very few exceptions, any technology that one civ has will be very rapidly traded to all the others in short order. You ever notice the AI seems very eager to trade techs among themselves, but they all refuse to offer the human player a trade on anything like decent terms.

I'm running a single player game on a Huge map with technology trading turned off. I'm not sure how this will affect the game over the long run, but it should result in civs which have very different capabilities.

what difficulty?

most of the time you can bleed the AI dry by selling them tech

I have found it very easy to catch up on tech by tradeing with an AI player.
the only time they refuse is when you are in frontof them on the tech tree.

How did this end up working out?

I am not sure it is connected, but the last time I tried this, religions were also not transferable. That was brutal if you were locked out from having started one and needed the happy happy element for your civ.

I like not trading in multiplayer though. Keeps my friends from being cretins, and bribing off the AIs to attack me :)

One thing I do know though, the AI sides don't care who they trade to. If one gets it, they all end up with it.
Thus, I NEVER trade techs to AI players, even ones that say they like me. Can't trust the dumb idiots to not give techs to my enemies.

I usually sell off old techs that no longer have real value. But, the second I sell to one, I immediately sell to them all. That way, they can't become buddy with each other by seeming to be nice trading with each other the tech I just gave to one :) I either sell it, or give it away. If the AI is going to get a favour, it's going to be from me!

No, haven't played Civ IV in months.

Just had some time on the PC at work, and thought I'd drop a post. :)

Oh - is it my turn or yours? Did you get the turn from MSN when I left it on all night?

Now I WISH I had turned those off.... I'm near the end of a large game, where I'm well ahead in points and military, but now the dang AIs are all building Spaceships! I can't go conquer them all (the other side of the world, on the other continent!) in time...
Double drat!!:freak:  :bite: :OHNO:

So what are my options?

1. ...start building Spaceship parts and try to win the Space race from way behind..? I think Gandhi is too far ahead.

2. ...um, what's left? ......nukes.....? Hmm, nukes... Nukes!? Hey, how about Nukes? :devious:  :OHNO: :clown:  Nukes!!! ahahahahaha!

I never would have thought when beginning this game that I'd be seriously considering nuking Gandhi...

It is annoying, but I almost always play it 'straight up', i.e. not a 'custom game'. I just started playing the games of the month, from civfanatics. I've noticed they mod they use changes the rules, probably mostly to take some of the luck factors out. I have yet to see any forest or jungle growth. In my latest attempt my spies were successful at sabotaging city production six times in a row! (Lucky for me, cause otherwise i woulda lost via space race)

"I never would have thought when beginning this game that I'd be seriously considering nuking Gandhi..."

(There must be some serious karmic penalty for that...)

Turned out I only threw one nuke, to the city about to finish building SDI...
So I went ahead with the big invasion and started building SS, but won with Domination.

My next game will have Tech Trading turned off, and space race.

I always play with trading turned off now, except in multiplayer games. I find it much more satisfying to research every tech myself. Gives them a little more meaning. Also techs advance WAY to fast with trading - no matter what the game speed. Musketeers for one are totally useless. Whole epics of advancement are leaped and bounded over with tech trading on.

The only things I miss iare the diplomatic options tech trading gives you. If my civ 12 step program fails and I play single player again I am going to try my modified version of increasing tech research costs by 50% but allowing tech trading.

You should try increasing tech by 200%, and having trading off...

Darn tootin'! I hate it when some tree hugger wins the game. I hate 15 nations that never do anything putting 120% into the space race - if you did anything all game except build your cities and economy, you'll never catch them! And you can't invade all of them at the same time.

Also have to echo Bill's point - entire eras of a specific unit's domination (age of powder, cav, etc) can be skipped right past in the blink of an eye... Kill the turn limit, slow down the techs, prevent trading, and let 'er fly!
