Does a player have to zip and send the spEmx000.cmt along with the spEmx000.dat file everytime he emails his turn to the other player? Or can he simply just zip and email the spEmx000.dat file only after the first turn?

Just the Dat file is sufficient :D

I am using Winzip for my file compression. How big a file is it if I don't zip it. Can I mail it unzipped?
Reason I am trying to get out of zipping the file because I don't want to buy the Winzip program, I am using the evaluation version and it's getting time consuming.

If you are using windows Xp, you can zip files up from within windows. Right click file(s) (using ctrl to select multiple files) then choose "send to" and one of the options is "compressed(zipped) folder"

I don't bother zipping my files for PBEMs, but I do send both .cmt and .dat files.
