Anyone planning on getting this when it comes out? It looks like it takes a lot its inspiration from Half Life 2, which is certainly not a bad thing in my book. The screenshots show that the game has a gritty, realistic feel to the environments.

I definately want to get it since I first heard about it two years ago.

Fall 06 was the last I heard on earliest possible release.

the game looks sweet, but not sure my system can handle it. it puked up the fear demo, so we'll see.F.E.A.R. is probably the single most demanding game you could run at the moment, at least with the settings turned up, so I wouldn't say that is the current "standard." Of course I would like to be able to run F.E.A.R. maxed out as well, but I can't quite get their without a significant upgrade.

It will be interesting to see how the graphics engine stands up to the Doom III, Half Life 2, and F.E.A.R. engines. Of course the new Unreal engine is on the horizon as well.

I'm less concerned about graphics than gameplay/story.

I buy a game - I want a game, not an extended demo. FEAR was horrible because it has next to no replayability, MP is naff, and no one is modding for it. And it was short.

Although F.E.A.R. did push the envelope in graphics, it was hailed by all the gaming sites for being one of the few FPS game to actually offer a decent story. Not as good as Half Life 2, to be sure, but still decent.

oh, I wasn't having a go at the story - that was good; more the gameplay department, and even then, just the longevity side of things. I don't think it's too much to ask to still want to play a game a week after I've bought it.

I mean, I still play AvP2, and it certainly took me longer than a week to play through it the first time (and It took me decidely less than a week, of casual playing, to get through FEAR)

Yeah, I'm a fan of longer games myself. I guess that's why I like to play things like Sim City.

it's why I regularly go back to games like Jagged Alliance, Fallout, UFO Enemy Unknown etc

FPSs obviously won't be as long as some of those gems, that's why mods and MP are so important. But I still regularly play SWAT3, even vs AI, as it is still interesting to do so :)

you're right, mods and mp are important. i wish i could play fear, but my computer gets mad at me and smacks me in the face if i try. the only reason i got HL2 was for counter-strike, and the fact that its so freakin pretty, but i dont like the story or the game play very much.

As a huge fan of the horror genre in all forms (movies, books, games, etc), I thought the story was the most disappointing part of the game. It was every Asian horror movie rolled up into one. I know that's the new big thing because everyone just learned to read subtitles (or remake them in a junky Hollywood version) but come on. Not only was the story cliched, but it only seemed to be around now and then, the entire middle of the game was devoid of any significant story elements in my opinion, and they decided to stop being creepy and just be a shooter for the vast majority of the game outside of the first two or so levels and the last level.

Quite frankly, those gaming sites that hailed the story in it wouldn't know a good story if it smacked them in the face.

Hehe Just like me...
Have you tried JA2 Wildfire? The new weapons and much better damage system increase replayability. (though it is decicively harder then JA2 sometimes.)
