We've made it!! :toast:

After 1 year & 7 months of playing :whlchr: the final round of the 3MiF Tourney is about to begin.

And where else of course could the final round of battling 3 months in FRANCE take place but in PARIS!
Down boys that comes after the battle!  I said down, down!!!! :ar15:

Bogdan will be on hand after the battle to "escort" the winner around his beloved city. :hmmm: (yes I know, but you can ditch him as soon as you like) :whist:

Here are the matchups for Rd 6.

1. Antoni36 / The Warrior / Herroberst

2. Aston008 / Malm / Boff

3. Tripps / NiG / The Purist

4. Cougar-DK / Gunner C / airbiscuit

5. Gonzo / Bazooka Bill / Bruce

6. Full Monty / v. Kleist (they will play mirrored)

Good Luck & Good Hunting :salute:

Greetings Northern France Warriors,

Instead of random matchups how do the players in 3MiF feel about running the final POD's as ranked? 1/2/3 4/5/6 etc. 16/17 would play mirrored.
It might add some equal score competition to the final round.

1. NiG / Tripps / Boff
2. Gunner C / Herr_Oberst / Bazooka Bill
3. airBiscuit / Bruce / The Warrior
4. Gonzo / Aston008 / CougarDK
5. Malm / The Purist / v. Kleist
6. Full Monty / Antoni36

As I remember we all agreed to playing round six as a final between the top two players (me and Tripps). I then suggested that if we were to be playing an extra game then why not let everyone else play it too... that's how round six came about.

By rights it should be all over now with someone being declared... lord and master!:halo:

3MiF was a five round tourney originally...

By random lot you will play and opponent of random quality (compared to yourself) by playing rankings then you have a better guarantee of having an opponent of similar quality to yourself. You also may have direct control over whether you advance a pisition in the tourney or not...

...so I choose to play by ranks

PS Boff... you just a wuss? :nofear:

Tripps
23 Jan 06, 18:11
So, everybody pairs off mirrored for the final round to determine final placement?

1 plays 2
3 plays 4
etc?

Sounds better to me

Palantir
23 Jan 06, 18:33
I run these for you so I'm up for whatever.
But- since we have an odd number we either have POD's & 1 mirrored or all mirrored & 1 POD.

Unless there's any further comments I guess we'll go with ranks: 1v2, 3v4 etc with the bottom 3 playing in a POD so everyone gets a competitive final round.

Tripps

Hi,

This one will be coming out by Friday do or die. I appologize for the delay!
We'll do the 1v2 3v4 etc. (unless there's an uprising).

1. NiG / Tripps
2. Boff / Gunner C
3. Herr_Oberst / Bazooka Bill
4. airBiscuit / Bruce
5. The Warrior/ Gonzo
6. Aston008 / CougarDK
7. Malm / The Purist

It's time for the "Battle for Luxembourg Park."

Should be an interesting scenario. :whist:

Remember, everyone that survives gets 2 weeks of R&R here in lovely Paris after the fighting stops. :whlchr:
Try not to destroy too much of the city while freeing it ok.

That swell but where are all my bazookas, flamers and all that stuff thats keeps me happy

Instead I get Tanks - for what reason, so my opponent can blow something up :smoke:

Wait and see - in five more turns I probable get xxxxxxxx more tanks for Purist to blow up :whist:

Hello Gentlemen,
I was thinking of giving out some tourney "Kudos" as voted on by you.
This can be done 2 ways- 1. email me or 2. post them here.

Ideas:

"Best Player to have PBEM'd Against in the Tourney"

"Toughest Allied / Axis Player" (win or lose) :ar15:

"Fastest File Turn-around Sender" :horse:

"Most Improvement," just based on difference between worst to best game score: so far this is Cougar-DK (diff 94) & Boff (diff 67)

"It's not Over until it's Over Player" (he fought like a cornered bobcat to the end in a Major/Total Defeat) :nofear:

"Tactician Award" (Turning an obvious defeat into a stunning Victory!) :surprise:
This one will rely on the loser to post & tell the story. :halo:
Or winner to gloat!

Other Kudo ideas?

We have some time as Rd6 moves along and you can recall past games (might want to look over the Tourney page - rounds & scores to refresh your memory)

Gonzo in defense during Charge of the Kings.

Slightly tarnished as we had to ceasefire before the true ending.

But from the sounds of it my arty completely thumped him, and then proceeded into turning sure defeat into a 51-49 draw in his favour.

After some initial issues with one game due to a file not getting through we're back in synch on both games and up to about turn 4 (or 5 I think).

As Allies I'm having a lot of luck one flank (some very inept shrek's failing multiple times to hit anything from very short range then immediately commiting suicide when a jeep driver stares at them), and real pain on the other (one Sherman dead, lots of other forces wondering what exactly to do next ...).

As Axis my shrek's performed a little better, and the French Jeep force has been significantly mauled by machine guns and infantry. However, the Shermans are advancing and firing and there's not a lot standing in their way

GunnerC
04 Apr 06, 01:27
On about turn 18 in both. Very different games.

As Allies it's been very bloody, though there is still some Axis heavy armour around. Small firefight going near one of the entrances to the park (flag position), and the Axis are starting to pull back from the centre of the park towards their HQ.

As Axis - the allies aren't quite as close to the centre of the park yet, but I think they have a lot more in reserve than I have in the other game. I suspect it's going to get very messy soon. The trick now is keeping the Alied infantry away from the centre of the park.

airBiscuit
04 Apr 06, 12:00
for my games vs Bruce, we are about 10 turns in, I am afraid, but we've been picking up the pace as of late:

as Allies-
A very rough start as the Germans had well-emplaced AT infantry in the buildings on the right flank road. The tanks didn't know what hit them. Nevertheless, a mechanized platoon performed a daring advance along the road to the far end, occupying a set of buildings only to encounter a heavy emplacement of Axis troops in buildings across from them. Lots of building to building fighting going on. On the left road approach, a mechanized dash for the grounds (first objective) was met with AT fire from hidden positions, quickly knocking out a couple of halftracks and about three or four Shermans. Despite these initial losses, French infantry managed to find cover in the nearby buildings, only to discover a German motorized platoon dug in and waiting for them. A flak truck presented a considerable problem for the French troops as it began bombarding the upper and lower floors of the buildings they occupied. Only a determined push by a reinforcement of Shermans is likely to turn the tide.

as Axis-
The Germans were surprised and overwhelmed by the sheer ferocity and speed with which the French advanced. Initial German defenses on their left flank were light and quickly subdued by the mechanized and armored French assault. Despite attempts to push back their advance along the road, the Germans only incurred further losses of armor and now face many French tanks on a covered advance on the Axis headquarters. Panther reinforcements are attempting to gain a foothold and stop the onslaught, but they are finding themselves outnumbered and easily outmaneuvered. On the Axis right, the French have taken the grounds and driven off emplaced German defenses. AT assets have been silenced along their advance, though the French have taken a few tank casualties from the dug-in AT guns. The Germans are finding their defenses against the armor dwindling to dangerous levels.

04 Apr 06, 12:04
BTW-

This is a very fun scenario, but the most maddening part is trying to get the troops to move under cover from building to building. It's hard to tell where the troops are going to go before the StratAI marks the waypoints, which more often than not sends them out the front screen door into a hailstorm of enemy fire.

Ugh.

The scenario designer is a sadist! He trickles in reinforcements without giving the player the slightest clue as to where they're arriving and how many. I've just had the game tell me I've got 'reinforcements' but I've spent 10 minutes looking for them and I'll be damned if I can find them! 'Fun' for some people I'm sure but this old-timer (read 'grouch' ) can find more enjoyable ways to while away time.;)

I am not as happy with my allied engineering reinforcement as I am with my two new Stugs. It will takes for ever marching them to the front (meaning more waypoints 4 me to place). Ofcause if facing an axis opponent whoes playing aggresive they could get handy in securing already taken objectives to the rear. (Did you read that Full Monty?)

I am also a bit doubtful in what to do with those halftrack flamers. Maybe I just set every tree on fire ;)

After digging up the originally gamefile I am stunned to learn that this is all true. I thought that Full Monty and I had a steady consistence gameflow not lacking behind and we are only at turn 19. Frankly speaking I think that the originally deadline was unrealistic and I'am not too fun of the new one either :OHNO:

Bruce and I have ended at about the same spot as Malm and Monty. We are in the process of negoitiating mutual cease fire. I will offer my complements to Bruce, though. He did a fine job on both attack and defensive games, managing to box me in and press the advantage. I think the outcome will be quite favorable for him this time around.

This was a very fun and challenging scenario. As I pointed out earlier, the one big problem that I have to gripe about is the ability to move my troops safely between buildings. They more often than not needed to run out into enemy fire to carry out my orders, and I had no way of knowing beforehand how they were going to proceed.

Maybe this is a question to be brought up in a new thread, eh?

Occasionally - when I had spend effort on micromanaging waypoints by placing them out of buildings to a spot where I wanted them - I had found that the AI had calculated a brand-new rute for them.

I think that in some circumstance the building itself does not alow you to enter or leave using that particularly rute of yours. Maybe the unit itself - in a breif of a moment are out of contact with their HQ?

In an urban area I usually keep my squads very tight. When entering or leaving a building I fun placing waypoints close on each side of the wall. Also I always leave a building before entering a new. Having units on the roof - I place at least one waypoint on the floor before leaving. At all time - try to keep your units in contact with their HQ - moving them altogether.

My guess is that the trick is to prevent the AI from calculating a new route which happens when it can no longer process the preplanned one or, your units are out of contact or - they are taking fire.

-

airBiscuit
05 May 06, 16:38
Thanks for the input, Malm. I suspect, though, that it has to do with the nature of the buildings themselves. They don't have doors on all sides. You can have two buildings squashed against each other and you can't move interally from one building to the next. This is realistic, yes, but in the interest of moving my troops the most sensible way, I want to know in advance just where the doorways actually are so I can plan a safe route, or abort the attempt at all.

I tried one approach, which was to set their movement to Sneak, which would have them move really slow and then the AI would tell me the next turn where they planned on moving. However, Sneak was just fast enough that they snuck right out into the open, drawing fire from two or three squads.

Maybe another trick would be to set Pause to the maximum value, and then set Sneak or Crawl, and see if the troops will get started just enough that the next orders phase I can see what the AI has in store for my troopers.

Nothing like setting 1-2 simple "move into building" orders and next turn see 20 waypoints and your guys running around like headless chickens.

Malm
05 May 06, 16:54
Yeah probaly nothing you hadn't tried before and only the designer knows the exact locations of them doors ;)

As I can see we both fun experimenting with them buildings. What I am unsure of is the designer's overall caluculation of the time we spend doing so. However - if we flip over each and every chair we meet on our path to victory we both may lack the needed time to securing them goals :D

Good luck

Nothing like setting 1-2 simple "move into building" orders and next turn see 20 waypoints and your guys running around like headless chickens.

Well - in a real war situation I honestly think that did happend - especially doing WWII in Paris. Wanna have bread, wanna have chease, wanna have wine, wanna have 6. What took you guys so long?

Maybe this is not an AI issue but more a well meant realistic feature :D

Well, after almost two years to the day, 3MiF is wrapping up. Bruce and I have finished our games, each seeing a victory for the Axis. It would seem that the French were going to have a long haul to liberate their homeland.

This tournament was great fun and I tip my hat to Kerry for seeing it through all the way. It's easy to come up with an idea, less easy to get it started, and hard to sustain it to the very end. I am glad to have been a part of it.

I now hear men on the march once again. I guess I better go fall in line and see where the column takes me.

My heartfelt thanks and admiration go to Bogan and Palantir for organising this excellent tournament. I found it a great excuse to brush the cobwebs of the Original CM and enjoyed every moment of it.

I loved the size difference in the games and the natural progression through Normany. Even getting to run around in King Tigers, which you don't get to do that often in Turnaments.
