Strategic Situation: December 1940.

In late November and early December the Italian 10th Army Corps under Marshal Maresciallo Graziani and the British Western Desert Force under General Sir Archibald Wavell faced-off across a 70-mile wide no-mans-land. The mid-point starts roughly at and runs south from Mersa Matruh, Eygpt. For weeks on-end small skirmishes and raids have been taking place along this stretch of unoccupied territory.

On the evening of December 6th the British began their advance across no-mans land and on the 8th they unleashed their long awaited offensive, code-named “Operation Compass” against the Italian Sidi Barrani defensive line. The attack went better than they could have hoped. Within 2 days the entire 10th Army Corps was in full retreat, although outnumbering the British in men nearly 3:1. Their withdrawal didn’t stop until they reached the safety of the Bardia fortifications 70 miles to the rear.

Scenario setting: 5 December.

As British formations move up and prepared for Operation Compass reconnaissance units from both sides continued to probe the empty frontier separating the two armies. On December 5th such units met along “Shawala’s Wadi,” contained within is something highly prized, water. Reports of this previously unknown spring draw the attention of higher command, units are quickly detached to take control of this area for possible “future” operations, and more importantly to deny it to the enemy.
