View Full Version : Civilization patch 1.52 released!
Readme here (http://www.civfanatics.com/civ4/doc/Civ4v152Readme.htm).
v1.52 is a major upgrade to Civ IV and includes numerous optimizations for memory usage that should help performance on all machines but are tailored to especially improve performance on machines at or near the minimum specification.
Major changes include:
-Shared low-level graphics buffers
-Removed many unused fonts and reduced interface memory usgae
-Paged out units which are not visible
-Reduced terrain data size and overhead
-Reduced route data size
-Created a set of low-res movies for machines without dynamic texture support (this is a separate download)
In addition to many gameplay tweaks.

Just typical, I had alot of packages to wrap up, as well as a mother to pick up at the train station. But, nooo... I have to create yet another empire to se if this patch is worth something ;)

Wow, that is quite a surprise that an update would be released this close to Christmas!
Thanks for the heads-up gobeavs!
And potentially equally as cool.
Buddy just told me Futureshop (Canada) has it planned for half price on Boxing day.
Don't be late! :)
Question, where IS this patch?
Not on the official page?
Never mind :) found this with some searching.

I encountered a message stating a 6 minute wait though :(
Further edit, choose Filefront, no wait time there :)

I should say - the easiest way to patch is through the in-game patcher...you can find it under "advanced" from the main menu.
I never ran into any issues personally with Civ IV before. But I started a game on the new "Marathon" speed setting at about 2am, and finally tore myself away at about 5:30am. I kept meaning to stop... "Okay I'll stop when I get to knights... hmm, I have Iron, but it's not making it to my capital because of the Japanese city in between, I should probably get ready for war and then stop and pick up the war tomorrow... Hmm, I think I can just take the 3 cities I need pretty quick I'll do that then head to bed... Hmm, the French just declared war on me (I was Germany), I oughta drive to Paris then head to bed..." And so on and so on.

Did you notice much different? I'll be interested to see if it helps my endgame performance..it got pretty bad in MP around 1900 AD.
I also heard that they added a new 1100 turn game-length.
In all my games, I have not actually experienced any game issues.
I will likely read that read me later when I have a need to fill some hole in the day.
I have won a diplomatic win so far. All my other games I have walked out on due to my success not being what I call a "success" hehe.
I have found "aggressive" AI to be a challenge. I think it tells the computer, build a LOT of units, and when the human looks to be having too much success going cultural, jump all over him.
15 units attacking cities with 3 units in them, usually get a pounding. They trash all your developments, and if you attack a large stack with anything other than a large stack, you get a pounding :)
I have also found, you have to carefully balance experience with proper type, proper terrain and proper target to get any results. In short, this game is a lot more wargamer friendly :)
My son is getting pounded simply because he expects a better unit to always win hehe. Knights are cool, but they are just like tanks, not perfect.
So far, I only seem to get attacked, when the putz nation on the bottom of the cultural score gets annoyed that I am just absorbing his lands without firing a shot at him hehe.
But through it all, the games seem stable. Just lags big time in late game.
I'm hoping most of the lag from end-game is from memory usage, which they supposedly fixed in the new patch.
Aries, you are right about having to through battles before you start throwing units everywhere....I have now realized the power of artillery.
I still have pretty good success with very simple armies. Only artillery and Cav for the offensives. Occasionally I'll bring another type of unit along (or in a recent multiplayer game as Japan with Beavs I found the beauty of Samurai). But I find because the computer usually has so many more units, or if nothing else, attacks completely randomly and all over the place for no reason, I need to have mostly cavalry type units for their mobility to deal with rapidly changing threats.
As for end game issues, I never had a lot of issues with it, even in multiplayer (the beauty of hosting I suppose), but hopefully this patch cleans things up for everyone.
That said, the Marathon (uberlong) game version is interesting. I'm enjoying it so far at least (and I was pretty unimpressed with the Epic setting).

something that always confuses me is the numbering of patches. how does it go from 1.09 to 1.52?? i'm not complaining, looks like some good stuff in the patch, thanx for the heads up!
by the way, nice sig overseer!!! i'm looking forward to opening my new widescreen unrated version of serenity on sunday, shiny!!

The large jump means it is a large update. The small jump from 1.0 (or whatever the original was) to 1.09 meant it was a small update. Why it was 1.09 versus 1.08 is probably just because internally they went from 1.01 to 1.02 and up through 1.09 before it was released...I'm guessing.

ahhh, it's all becoming clear now....
Word on the street is the Civilopedia is much improved.
Some people are having problems with the new patch, and it seems it can be solved by deleting the old cache files, which are in C:\Documents and Settings\<Your user name>\Application Data\My Games\Sid Meier's....\cache. Make sure to show hidden files first though, so you can get to them (in Explorer, tools > folder options > view tab > under advanced settings.
Roger the civopedia improvements. The end-of-game mess is cleared up and air transport makes sense now.

Ooohhh, air transport changed? Interesting, I haven't gotten that far in any of my patch games (since I started only a multiplayer we haven't picked up again yet, and a marathon game).
Yeah, I could never make it work. Now, a bold green square marks availble destinations.

Erm.. that's odd, that always showed up for me...
...oh wait, no it just showed up when I moused over a legal destination, but if they show up without mousing over than that's cool.
Just read the transcript from the xfire chat with various big-cheeses that worked on the game...they talked about reducing memory usage 20-50% in the next patch (which is in final testing), and showing exact combat odds. I think they are talking about 1.52 (this chat was on the 21st), but I don't remember exact combat odds in it. Maybe those are coming in the next patch.
For me the patch made the game finally playable... That's the way it should have been from the begining.
