View Full Version : Half-Life 2 for 64-bit released
From Steam News (http://www.steampowered.com/index.php?area=news&id=496).
Valve, a leading entertainment and technology studio, unveiled a 64-bit version of its Source game engine technology today. The first 64-bit Valve games released will be native 64-bit versions of Half-Life 2 and Lost Coast
Hopefully one of the tech sites will get some performance comparisions between the 32 and 64-bit versions, at which time I'll report in here.
The valve update news didn't really say what it changed, I wonder if it's just supposed to increase performance or if it's actually supposed to change things (textures, etc.) in games like the farcry patch.

Knowing Valve at best it increases performance. It takes them half a year to make a new skin for a model in Counter-Strike, there's no way they actually made any new textures or anything for this.

:cheeky:
I fired it up and it actually seemed the game was running slower, that might just be me though....

Do you have Windows 64-bit and the associated drivers?

Yup, for sure (I wouldn't reccomend it)
There was a comparision article here (http://techgage.com/review.php?id=3889) but it got somewhat of a /. effect when it hit digg.com and now is down....comments from people who got to read it before it died said the article didn't find any evidence to make the 64-bit edition preferred.
EDIT: Google cache of the 2nd page here (http://216.239.51.104/search?q=cache:qPoRPNKJvIYJ:techgage.com/review.php%3Fid%3D3889%26page%3D2+&hl=en). No pictures, but you get a table and the words.
Admittedly, this was by no means an intensive test. But these quick run-throughs can give a good idea of whether 64-Bit is anything to really get excited about yet. Sadly, I was expecting better performance in 64-Bit but was left dissapointed. I would rather play the 32-Bit version where I saw better FPS than have slightly faster load times.
