View Full Version : How accurate are the maps?
Just curious...I like how you can move around them and get a good 3d view of the battlefield (I just downloaded the demo last night).
Thanks,

Maps can be anything from pure fiction to an absolute CM representation of the real battlefield.
Pure fiction is pretty self explanitory.
An absolute CM representation of the real battlefield isn't so self explanitory. CM takes some liberties when it comes to maps just like it does with almost everything else it does. For the most part, I can make a map that is very accurate. Can I make a map that is 100% accurate? I don't believe that can be done. EVER! On any system, for any game. Or that it ever will be possible.
Here's why I think the best you can ever do with a CM map is semi-historical. Was there a small rise just 13 feet from that critical house on the left 60 years ago? Does that photo of the village you have show that? Does the topo map you have show that?
Here's what I think the best you can ever with a CM is. I can put every fence, small stand of trees, road, bridge, AT TIMES every building, shell holes, rubbled houses, crops, and an endless list of other combinations.
Towns are not well modeled, as was the case in ASL. A single building in a 20 meter square area sometimes doesn't show an actual situation. There are no, massive walls, that tanks or infantry can't go through or over. A tank cannot drive through even the smallest of buildings, though the scenario designer can put them inside and if you play HSG scenarios you will find them in more than one building.
There is no ability to make "mouse holes" in row houses. If you from one row house to another you must go out into the street, when leaving one before going into the adjacent one.
Water is for the most part done well. The lone exception to that is that vehicles cannot cross ice. Even if the ice is at a shallow water crossing, which could be done if the water wasn't frozen.
A lot of historical maps are made from photographs and battlemaps and can be very detailed and as accurate as is humanly possible.
For the most part CM maps are EXCELLENT! The best in a wargame editor, that I have seen, for overall ease to make and end result.
Good Hunting.

BrianWhen you are on the battlefield there are view point height.... use the 1-9 keys.... to get down low hit the one and use the mouse or up-left-right-down keys to move around the map... follow a road, etc... level 2 will bring you up in angle a bit etc... Use the hotkeys button if you dont have the rule book with the demo... this should help
That is all...
Thanks for the info...I appreciate it.
