View Full Version : Kellys Heros - "Tiger"
This has probably been asked & answered a million times already but because I can't picture it & it's bugging me...
Does anyone know what model of tank was used as the last "Tiger" running in the movie "Kelly's Heros?"
What about the Sherman's used as long as we're on the subject?

The Tiger in Kelley's Heroes is actually a T-34 mock-up. Notice the forward placement of the turret.
Absolutely right... t34... but they did do a good job didn't they. Not like the awful KTs in the Battle of the Bulge... :blab:
Try this...http://www.nitpickers.com/movies/repository.cgi?pg=t&sp=i&tt=54438
I can remember it was an odd looking beast- I'll have to catch it again.
I do know I loved that movie as a kid- the town battle vs that Sherman was a "blast!"

Kelly's Heros was filmed in Yugoslavia. The Tiger was a converted Yugo T-34. I wonder if it still exists?
Note that the Tigers in Saving Private Ryan were also converted T-34s. I saw one at the Bovington Tank mueum after the movie was filmed but before it was released and thought it was the Kelly's Heros "Tiger." But later found out what it was when SVP came out. Does anyone know if Bovington still has it?
Why are T-34's used for Tigers?
Besides that there may be a lot of them still around?

Why are T-34's used for Tigers?
I think foir two reasons:
1. In KH, they were in Yugoslavia and that is what was available.
2. The roadwheels can be made to look somewhat like a Tiger's wheels as no other tanks besides German ones had that type of suspension.

If that was the case, why didn't they? There were no interleaved wheels in either Kelly's Heroes or SPR.
The features disc of Band of Brothers shows the comparison of a T34/85 and a Tiger. Overall, the height of the main gun was just about identical and the length of the hull was close. T34 also has wide tracks like the combat tracks of a Tiger.
If anyone really thinks there are all that many Tigers in running condition in the world, point them out - no one used them after 1945 while the T-34 remained on inventory in many Arab and eastern European countries; probably still does. There are one or two Tigers kicking around but those that aren't on plinths are jealously guarded by museums, and rightly so.

What they did in SPR was cover the large wheels to look like Tiger wheels but it would be very difficult, if not impossible to interleve wheels and remain function on the T-34.
There is no running Tiger that I know of unless the Bovington one runs. Kubinka has a Tiger but there arn't many left for whatever reason.

There is also at least one running Tiger II - Namur, I think?

It's at the French Army Armor Museum at Samur. I don't know if it's a runner or not.

Guys
Just stumbled across this thread :)
I agree that the Kellys Hero Tiger was a T34.
I believe however that the Tiger 1 in Saving Private Ryan was a T55 and is owned by a private collector here in the UK, and he shows it at various meetings around the county. Search for Beltring War and Peace Show on the net and I'm sure you'll see photos of it.
The Tiger II at Samur is a runner, although it only every moves on Bastille day.
The Bovington Tiger 1 was lovingly restored and is a runner, the only one in the world at the moment. Interestly I believe the Tiger 1 that was in the USA at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds has been sent to the UK to be restored by the same people.

The Tiger at the Bovington Tank Museum is a genuine model, captured in Tunisia and fully restored, fully operational. It's the only operational Tiger I in the world. Here's me stood next to it (just click on the thumbnails).

There is a replica Tiger at the Duxford Land Warfare Hall and here's one of my pictures of that, but it's amazing how considerably smaller it is compared to the real thing. I think this one was used in SPR (I visited the Museum with someone who worked on SPR, and he said this was the case, so I trust him).

Finally, I saw this beastie at the Beltring War and Peace Show this year, again, it's a replica, by looking through the driver's port you could actually see the framework of the vehicle below.

As you go to each gallery, if you click back and forth you'll find more pix of each of those vehicles.
