Technical Advice required

I have recently installed a service pack from Microsoft for Outlook Express 6 as a critical download from their site. I run Win 98. I now find all my incoming attachments are automatically blocked so i cannot access them. Apologies to those waiting a gaming reply. The message i get in the attachment line is: "OE removed access to the following unsafe attachements in your mail: (and then whatever the file name is)". I have looked through the parts of the system i know to switch this off but have found nothing. Can anybody else advise before i pull my hair out.

cheers

I found this on a site: http://access.globalknowledge.com/article.asp?ID=4060

Q: I am unable to open all attachments to e-mails that I receive on Outlook Express 6. When I try to open an attachment, I keep getting the message ''OE removed access to the following unsafe attachments in your mail.'' This blocking of attachments also will not allow me to open jpeg photos that are sent as attachments. When I was Outlook Express 5, I did not have any problem. -- Anonymous

A: You've narrowed down the source of your problem very well. Outlook Express, starting with version 6, tries to stop you from opening any attachment that ''could potentially'' be a virus. I don't think jpeg photos should fit that description, but sometimes viruses do arrive disguised as photos (by giving them names like ''lookatthis.jpg.scr'' that might fool you). So be careful.

Here's how you can turn off the restriction for a particular file type: start Windows Explorer by right-clicking the Start button and picking Explore. Now go to Tools... Folder Options and pick the File Types tab. Scroll down until you find the kind of file you want to exempt, such as ''jpeg image,'' highlight it and pick Edit. Uncheck the box that reads Confirm Open After Download and that will effectively exempt the file from Outlook Express restrictions. If you don't find the box checked, then the files you're getting may not really be jpeg photos.

If you would like to completely disable the restriction on attachments -- knowing that this will make you much more vulnerable to viruses -- you can do so from within Outlook Express 6. Go to Tools...Options...Security and uncheck the box that says ``Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus.''

With the last critical updates for Outlook Express there was a check mark automatically added in the security area. With OutLook Express 6.0 open it then go to tools, then to options and then to security. Uncheck the mark next to the box "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" then hit apply. With a check in that box OE will not allow ANY attachments in mail received. If you do uncheck it make sure you do not open anything in question and make sure you have a current antivirus program running on your computer.

Hope these help.

For anybody wanting an alternative to Outlook Expresss, try Incredimail (free download).

I found OE to be very buggy, but Incredimail is very smooth. Also, the added graphics, sound, and stationary options are real cool.
