Can I train my helicopter crews as artillery observers? Some helicopters can direct fire; they suck at it (the fire mission takes too long to initiate) but if I make them issue fire commands often enough, will they get better at it? I know units improve in SPMBT but I don't understand the process completely.
Each of my combat groups has an artillery observer unit. It's a couple of guys with a radio who travel in an armored carrier. They can order fire missions with great efficiency but in 9/10 cases they don't have direct line of sight to the enemy.
In contrast, my helicopters are always watching the enemy from high altitude. If my helicopters could crash an observed barrage on them could put some real hurt on them.
Hmm, it would be a very good concept for all these light helo's at least.
I am interested in an answer as well.

I would think in a long campaign the Artillery Command rating might increase over time but I'm just guessing. I don't know if the unit experience rating increasing (again in a long campaign) would affect the Artillery or other Command ratings.
do a test campaign on a not too small map with fantastic visibility, buy nothing but 1 helo and a whole lotta artillery. take note of your arty command rating in round 1. finish the first scenario by blowing everythign to smithereens. when second scenario starts, observe if your experience and/or arty command levels go up.
I do not believe either will. I think the only thing that makes units improve is killing other units. So your arty may be getting better but the spotters do not.
You can always artificially increase your arty obs rating on a bird or two with mobhack ...

It would be even better to have light airplanes as arty/damage observers. This aspect is quite missing.
DD, in the campaign, can we "train" (by giving them the task) our helicopter crews to this? Then in the battle you could edit it with MobHack.

I've seen spotter aircraft (prop planes) in various OOB's in Win SPMBT.

Then in the battle you could edit it with MobHack.No. The campaign will only last 12 hours, not really enough time for something like that. It would be useful in another campaign run like the Island Civil War one with simulated 1 week turns.
