Hehe, interesting situation
OK, in first turn of FiTE you get also Italian HQ in Trieste, and I moved it by rail to front line of Army Group South...
In my first turn I attacked with artillery and Italian unit was stacked with them but they didn't participated in attack because they couldn't, they were in wagons :)
Lo and behold, now I noticed that at the end of turn 1 they had only 30 % of supply out of 100! They shouldn't have lost any supply.
Any explanation?

I've seen this before with entrained ssm units, which is exceptionally annoying since they've typically got very large bombardment ranges. I forgot about it when doing the buglist.

I forgot to add that Italian HQ had 60% prof. and was untried and after those rounds of combat in first turn was veteran and has now 50 % prof.
So, somehow maybe some bombardments did reach this unit, maybe some 2 hex range gun have hit it from some Russian infantry that was defending. But, this is very strange as this unit didn't fired a shot so it is a bug maybe.

Did the hq have any r2 guns? I know embarked ssms will support any battle in range, and IIRC even show up in the combat report. I don't recall what if anything happens with shorter ranged units in the stack, (mainly because I kept my scud units well back from the front)

Yes, they have some r2 guns... Didn't pay attention on battle report though.
BTW, I remember also that Italian air units later could get veteran status by puting them to air superiority I think, they could be also I think not in range from enemy fighters so i don't know where they did get their veteran status. This air units thing I say only by memory so maybe it's not 100% accurate but I know that something like this happened.
