I have a question. As a long-time Close-Combater, how does Combat Mission compare? With no new CC until at least Feb. I'm looking for something in the genre as a filler.
I've never played CC so no idea.

THere are many differences between the two games.
First of all, CM is one generation more advanced (at least). It has a real 3D enviornment. It has real multiplayer options (pbem or tcp) and it has a far better map editor and scenario editor.
It is also far more realistic. The projectiles are tracked individually (I mean main gun shells, not small arm fire). Weapon database is thorough and solid and covers almost everything in the theater. OOB's are good and well-researched. It also included many more tactics.
The mechanism is also fundementally different. CC was more like RTS (although it is much more robust than most of the click-fest RTS) while you have control over your unit at any time. In CM, you do not. You only issue orders in "turns", which is minutes in fact. During each minute, the AI "execute" your orders and there are some random factors will affect how your units will actually behave. This AI is called TacAI. And it is vitally important to understand its behavior in order to master this game.
oh, it is also far more flexible than CC, you can have a lot (A LOT) more troops and way bigger maps. Overall, I would say it is way much better than CC.

How to make friends lesson number 1: Go to a forum dedicated to a specific game and then call it 'filler'
ER has made several good points. I'd add that the only area where CC scores over CM is the campaign structure. I think CC gives you a sense of being part of something bigger whilst CM is 'just' a battle, even the operations (several battles strung together) feel strangely isolated.

That guy had insulted the great game known as 'Combat Mission',when he has purchased that game he must be humbled in PBEM~~~!!!

Another area CC series is better is that individual infantry units are portrayed individually while in CM it is like 3 infantry units are represented by one 'unit'~~~
Overall, besides what ER had mentioned the environment in CM is more dynamic as in you can destroy the buildings(if you have enough firepower) and soldiers can choose which floor to go if it is a high building. Also more variety of units in CM series(I have played both CC3 and CC5).
Even then I must say CC series is a classic, but then i still strongly recommend CM series~~~

Since you cant alter your tactical movements immediately and many a times you have to leave it to the units to slug it out themselves for 60 seconds straight,i would say that the game theory has far more importance in CM.
Anticipating the opponent's movement is really the crux and challenge of the game~~~ :smoke:

:hush: I suppose that could have been worded a bit better.
I think I had downloaded a demo of one of the CMs a few years ago and while intriguing, it seemed to play very slowly (and didn't really give a sense of over-all "campaign"). Has this improved through the newer versions? What would be a good starting point for a beginner, and how is the real-time multiplayer (not pbem)?

No campaign at all, though they are developing a campaign game for CMBB as we speak.

We're a pretty relaxed lot here :smoke:

Either CMBB or CMAK would be fine, and you should be able to acquire them pretty cheaply nowadays. Choose whichever one fits your theatre of preference. :) Note:- CMAK covers the whole of the Mediterranean theatre of war from 1940 through to 1945 and there are mods available which alter the appearence of the game to cater for players who prefer the battles in North-West Europe 1944-5. Incidentally I don't find the play in CM to be any slower or faster than CC.
TCP/IP play is pretty easy to set up (one player hosts) and it's considered polite not to take too long over issuing orders for the next turn. With this in mind it's best to stick to small battles unless you can come to some kind of agreement with your opponent prior to starting the game.

Thanks for all the responses and info. I'll have to look around at prices.
