Ok I made the scenario. I sent the file to my opponent. He sent back his part.
Now what? I put the file in PBEM. Does it go somewhere else? Do I put it in saved games?

Save the file he sent in your PBEM folder. When you open the game be sure to select Multiplayer game, then Load Email. Select the right file and load it up and you'll be off and running. I'd suggest naming it something unique so if, or when, you get more then one game going it will be easy to know which is which.
Most of this information is in the manual! :p

No it isnt. The Manuel doesnt specify to use multiplayer to get the saved games to appear. Since you dont have to use multiplayer to start a play by email game it does not follow that one would assume you must use it find the save game file.
More to the point, most games consider multiplayer to be ON LINE. Thus they have a seperate PBEM section.
Hey Twotribes.
Naming your game files something like your name_opponent name_01.txt, then *_02.txt, *_03.txt for each new file, just help no to be confused with game files, especially if you're (or want to be) on with several games with different players.
Also it helps to clean your pebm folder with past useless files, keeping your video files only.. :smoke:

I normally keep the last file I sent to my opponent only. Not only does it keep the pbem folders relatively clean but it makes picking which match(es) I have to play in a session a doddle. Bear in mind that the number of games I have on the go at any one time runs into double figures so with only 2 or 3 running you may not need to be quite so ruthless with the saves.
Incidentally I'd agree with TT that the manual (such as it is over here) could be clearer. I was able to play a relatively experienced player in my first pbem match and I learned a lot that way. Once you know what you're doing it does tend to be a touch of :duh1: but at first it can seem a bit daunting :)
I'm now a big fan of overwrite. I just call the game something like 'Bastogne' and simply overwrite it as we go along. I used to go on the numbered turns but now find this way easier.

I've never felt comfortable with that. I've seen too many dodgy files (well, 2 or 3 :D ) to trust it. Plus it allows me to change my mind
Two words: Pbem Helper (http://www.nic.fi/~fuerte/pbem.htm).
The neat tricks that this will do to organize and launch your pbem games is too numerous to mention - that website sums it all up.
