View Full Version : Unit pathing

Ok, question, and this is something that has been bothering me a bit.

I create an enemy unit package, an MRB for example, and place it where I want it to start. Then I create the path I want that MRB to take to its objective, give it the assault mission (or ABF, or SBF or whatever). And then, leave it alone. Then I go through this process with the other MRB's I might use, and any other enemy units, place the friendlies and then go to play test using the clock. Everything looks good, for the most part. Hit reset to put everything back where I want it, make sure I have saved everything at least a thousand times (or so), and then go to play the scenario. After playing about 2 - 3 hours of playtime, for instance, the enemy is not showing up or doing only about half of what I want it to do. This takes into account rolling through woods and other types of restrictive terrain (all the paths were clean and should be legitimate, no little green X's with circles indicating a block in the path).

My question is this...I open up the scenario with the editer, and find that the paths that the enemy units have is NOT the one I had planned, even after checking the box "Use Current Path" in the mission dialog. What, if anything, am I doing wrong? Or, perhaps more accurately, what, in general, is going on to cause this problem.

Some help please.

Zip and e-mail the scenario files to me, and I will take a look at it.

Are you using an existing scenario? If so, go to the AI Script for enemy forces (in the "Units" menu, and see if there are phases and orders there. If there are, then this is probably the problem. The script is giving orders that override the missions you are giving your hierarchies.

You can fix this by deleting the phase orders in the script, as well as any initial orders in the script.

In order for me to do that I would first have to figure out which files are required in order to give a user the entire scenario. Secondly, I have deleted the scenario (the main one that you get from scenario selection screen anyway..hope that killed what I needed to kill) and started over. I also believe that, sort of in lines of what you were saying about using a previously existing scenario (which I'm not), that the problem lies somewhere in the Faction AI Scripting. After doing a little more research in the tutorial about building scenarios, I have found that I have skipped this step, thinking that I didnt need to do it. Well, now I'm trying it out to see if that helps any. Still doesn't quite add up 100% but at this point I am looking to see if that is indeed the problem, and then from there, come up with a viable solution.

Go to the "Data" folder and zip up all of the files with the name you specified when creating the scenario. It will be file names like my_scenario.asc, my_scenario_friendly.unt, etc.
