I have executed encirclement maneuvers with helicopter units being deployed as regular ground units-to plug a hole in the ring. This made me very nervous but it seems to work. Does it? The enemy inside the ring was annihilated, they didn't overrun my helicoptres trying to get out.

Depends on the time, helicopter pilots tend to want to be in the club by 5:00 PM. And they don't seem to want to be up very early in the morning either.

This tactic has come up in my Vietnam scenario and at first I was concerned it was too gamey. But there is a historical rationalization in that the U.S. used helicopters to pour firepower into an area to prevent the enemy using that as a retreat route. TOAW doesn't allow us to interdict empty hexes so we plop the gunships down. I don't care for the way this looks but the end result seems to be accurate enough.

Its not gamey,i remember my father describing just such an incident. It involved just 1 or 2 cobras hiding below the tree line and popping up when the ambush was sprung, can't recall all the details of what he said.Even if the tactic wasn't really used your just being innovative, isn't that what a good commander does?
