One of the best TOAW scenarios I played, fantastic map, accurate OOB's fantastic even engine. Great job!
German player:
PLAN: taking Stalingrad will be too expensive in troops, so a moderate push will be taken by 6th Armee, to reach the outer defenses, where a cordon on Infantry will take the defnesive. The north front will be garrizoned by a fresh pz division starting in october to act as mobile defence.
The main push will be on two axis: 1.4th Pz Armee to Astrakhan, to cut the caucasus railway and to then move north to take Stalingrad from the rear. 2. 1st Pz Armee, 17th Armee 11th Armee Rumanian and Italian forces will drive to seize the Caucasus on a frontal assault (assuming forces there are weaker).
Soviet player:
PLAN: Lure the german into Stalingrad, smash him with a pincer counteroffensive.
ACTION: German forces painfully reach Stalingrad defenses and painfully pass the lake lines in the south. Astrakhan is taken by turn 30 and German armored forces cross the Volga and start rampaging in the back of the Soviet lines, who gather much reinforcements and halt these forces in what looks like a semi-encirclement of Stalingrad. Soviet cannot make a pincer attack anymore and so mlaunches its winter offensive (half-Uranus) against Italian forces with objective of cutting the whole German forces off.
In the Caucasus, German forces easyly seize Maikop and Grozny, but then advance slowly. Italian Alpini and Rumanian forces manage to hop across the Caucasus and reach Armenia and trigger a Turkish intervention. Soviet forces in the Caucasus hold on to ground around Baku, which is not taken at the end of the scenaro.
The winter soviet offensive smashes through the Italien 8th army and drives towards Rostov, but is ultimately stopped by the 1st Panzer Army, who is now railed back from its Caucasus campaign.
It ends as a substantial victory for the Axis.
Very enjoyable and somewhat balanced scenario, with cold sweats for both players. bravo! wouldn't have wanted to live in 1942!!
