Double elimination.

The end date to signup for this tourney is 10/23 so let anyone interested know.
Start date should be 10/29.

Just join the ladder Kent! :hail:
Heck 1/2 the KG'ers already there are in the Top 10! :devious:

I have no problem with players who say they don't care about ladders.
I certainly have no time to devote to getting "better" on them. I play when I can for fun, but I do so on the ladder (usually) to report scenarios and GIVE points to players that like ladder play. (All except ER-Chaser I refuse to play him & see him gloating over my dead pixelmen when he beats me! ) :whist:
But I fail to see why the "don't care for them crowd" doesn't join so they can play in tourneys for the fun & excitment.

Join- play- ignore the ladder- simple! :horse:

I used to be a member of several ladders for other games and i have had great fun and horrible experiences as well. Im sure as everything else thats involved with this site, that its all top notch, but i have had too many bad experiences to ever be in any ladders again. They just bring out the worst in people. Im sure its not that way here and i have been told by my clanmates that its all top quality compitition, but i still cant bring myself to join. I have an eerie feeling the moment i click my mouse to join ill be struck dead by a bolt out of the blue, or die of a ladder relapse or some such thing. :dead:

I dont quite understand - if you dont really care about your personal progress on the ladder, but want to play in the tourney, just click and join up, and ignore anything to do with it from that point on?
Or am I missing something?

See thats what you might think, and so would i, to start with. Then the old feelings of compitition would return, then the old obsessions.....then the sleepless nights and nightmares and flashbacks..... i wont be happy til im in the top 50, then the top 25 and so on and so forth....and then god forbid i run into any un-gentlemanly players.....my heart would break all over again. Sorry for my ignorance.

Here's my take - but Palantir is the God on this tournament so he may need to confirm this.

It's a mechanism to ensure that in a knock-out tournament everyone plays at least two rounds, and that one unlucky loss doesn't totally kill you off.

Essentially each round is played with everyone playing one game, and at the end everyone who has fewer than two losses across all the rounds played continues into the next round. Obviously after round 1 everyone moves into round 2 as you can't have more than one loss. At the end of round 2 you will advance into round 3 as long as you haven't lost both the first 2, and then into round 4 as long as you haven't lost 2 of the first 3 etc.

It means you cannot predict at the start of a round how many players will make it into the next round. When there is an odd number of players one wll have to get a bye (perhaps they could play a friendly with Palantir ? )

2054172
21 Oct 05, 06:06
From my perspective we each play two games in the 1st round and round two etc.. One as Axis and one as allied. The best combined score proceeds to the next round. The loser is booted off the Boot. :smoke:

I believe for this tourney we will just play one game per round instead of 2 vs the same opponent. That way if a new player draws a "top" player he doesn't get wiped out in two games vs him at once. (It will also speed up the rounds)

Round 1:
I will randomly divide the field into 2 groups- Axis / Allies. All matches will be randomly determined. The Axis player will determine the terrain settings- town, rural / few trees, heavy woods etc.

Round 2:
Players switch teams- all Axis players in Rd 1 now play in Rd 2 as Allies & Allies as Axis. New random pairings are made. Again Axis player determines the terrain settings.

Round 3:
Only players that have 2 wins will advance into Rd 3. Players will once again randomly be divided into Axis / Allies & randomly paired. Winners advance into Rd 4.

When there is an odd number of players one wll have to get a bye (perhaps they could play a friendly with Palantir ? )
Oh I get it- don't play in a round but get an easy win vs me!

Try splitting the field - Top half versus bottom half - works very well in this sort of tournament and ensure no one gets stomped on the the first round.

If you have 16 players, #1 plays #9, #2 plays #10, #3 player #11 and so on until #8 plays #16. For the second round, simply assign points to players with a win and then sort them by w-l and seeding, split the field again and go on to round 2. Very simple and avoids bad match-ups.+

I'm not sure that your idea for round 3 will work. If you have only 2 players at 2-0 and 14 players at 1-1 you have effectively abandoned the "double elimination" format. Round two should again assign a point to the victor who would then be placed in the 2-0 or 1-1 column. Reorganize for round 3 based on points and initial seeding, split the field again, go on to round three.

By the time round four rolls up you will have eliminated a few players and the rest will be 2-1 or 3-0. Assign a point to the winners, re-seed, split,...and so on.

This removes the need for random placement and makes for a better competition (it is an elimination tournament so "competition" shouldn't be a dirty word here). Heck I'll even volunteer to help with administering the rounds.

...I see - different to how I do mine, where you have to lose twice to be knocked out... :)

Waleed
21 Oct 05, 13:17
...the way I run my "Double Elimination" Tourneys -

32 players matched up (by whatever method you wish :))

After Round 1, 16 winners go to Pool A, 16 losers go to Pool B.

Round 2, still 32 players:
8 v 8 in Pool A, winning 8 go to Pool X, losing 8 to Pool Y.
8 v 8 in Pool B, winning 8 go to Pool Y, losing 8 eliminated.

Round 3: 24 players, 8 in Pool X who have not lost, 16 in
Pool Y who have lost once.

4 v 4 in Pool X, winning 4 go to Group 1, losing 4 to Group 2
8 v 8 in Pool Y, winning 8 go to Group 2, losing 8 eliminated.

Round 4: 16 Players, 4 in Group 1 who have never lost, 12 in
Group 2 who have lost once.
2 v 2 in Group 1, winning 2 to Pool P, losing 2 to Pool Q
6 v 6 in Group 2, winning 6 to Pool Q, losing 6 eliminated.

Round 5: 10 Players, 2 Players in Pool P, 8 in Pool Q
Winning player, W, from Pool P goes to Knock Out Stages
Losing Player from Pool P goes into the Knock Out Stages
4 v 4 in Pool Q, 4 winners go to Knock Out Stages, 4 losers
eliminated.

You effectively have a Knock Out Tourney now, as there
are only 6 players left, one, W, with a "spare" life as he has
not lost, and 5 Players who have lost once.

Now, in Round 6
i. W wins, so 3 are eliminated and you have 3 players in Round 7.*
ii. W loses, so 2 are eliminated and you have 4 players in Round 7.**

* W who has never lost, and 2 who have lost once.
** all four have lost once.

If i happens, I let W decide if the other two play-off in Round 7
for the privilege of facing him...then Round 8 will be W v one other.

(Or in Round 7 W could play one, and let the other have a bye. W wins
then he has a "life" remaining, W loses, you have 3 left and do a Round
Robin. OR, you could have a "Fresh" Round Robin with 2 lives each if i happens.
Basically if i happens you can do many things to resolve it)

If W wins, he has won - if W loses, there is Round 9 with two players
who have lost once - and the winner is the one who wins Round 9.

If ii happens, it is dead easy - you have Round 7 of 2 v 2 all of whom
have lost once, and you basically have 2 Semi-Finals.

...and Round 8 is the final consisting of two players who have lost once.

There you go... ;) :D

...hope this helps - if it does not, just ignore it :) :cheeky: I am just happy to be playing in a Tourney - as long as no one is eliminated for not "winning" big enough... :(

Hey Savatage - we last played 20th May to 18th June 2002...

...in the Second WarfareHQ Quick Battle Tourney.

Your Green Devils, Rocket Arty and Armour was slaughtering my Brit paras and their armour support for 16 Turns.

...I had one Stuart and one Challenger left v

Puma
Hummel
StuG
Hetzer
JP IV
Tiger
...and a Marder.

You were strangling my men with a tactical win, but as your armour on the flanks battered my infantry there was a gap up the middle along 2 roads, only guarded by the Tiger and JP IV.

...my 2 tanks went for it, and you fried the Stuart :(
To divert your right flank I managed to get a full platoon within 1 metre of the Hummel...but you annihilated it, then the Challenger saved me, wry grin.

He got within 11 metres of the Tiger, 68 metres of the JP IV and 100 metres of the Hetzer, one by one, taking them out in Movies 16, 17 and 18 - he got cocky though and went head to head with a Panzerschreck at 68m and lost...

Matches in the first two rounds will be randomy determined, and will basically follow Waleeds DET rules.

Players will be randomly matched up for rounds 1 & 2. There-after double elimination rules apply.

Players will play as follows:
Winning players will stay in Bracket “A” as long as they win. Losing players will drop to Bracket “B.” Any player who loses their second game while in Bracket B will be eliminated. Players with 1 loss will stay in Bracket B until they lose their second game & advance to the finals.

I'll struggle to average more than one a day. It all depends on RL (other family members on the PC and late nights / trips for work) getting in the way.

On a good day with a communicative opponent I can sometimes get through quite a few turns.

I'm seriously committed at the moment, gaming-wise (4xCMBB, 3xCMAK, 2xCMETO plus the tourneys) so presently I couldn't guarantee being able to turn around more than 1 phase per day. Obviously this varies so I could be able to speed this up depending on when the contest starts.

...regarding the Divison Type.

I read it as Italian Infantry v Canadian Mechanized.

...is this correct ?

...as this is a Tourney and I am out to win rather than a fun social game, I would pick Rural Heavy Tree Coverage and the Canadians would be stuffed as all their vehicles would be next to useless.

Would it not be more equitable to have Infantry v Infantry if the Axis player is picking the Map Parameters.

Or making it set map parameters, eg, Village, Moderate Trees and Hills so the Canadian vehicles have a chance ?

Those parameters of interest are:

Axis- Infantry Division
Allies- Mech Division

Axis- determines the field of battle= terrain.

I lay all the "blame" on 2054172 :whist: who was the brains behind this one and selected what settings to have for round one.
I'm willing to give anything a try once.

Word of note:
The Allied players should carefully read the QB scenario settings selected by the Axis player BEFORE purchasing their units.

I choose not to answer that comment on the grounds I may incriminate myself... :whist:

If it's the European version then it has to be installed to the 'Run' directory. Not, incidentally, a 'New Folder' in that directory! (Been there, done that  )

Hello all,
After seeing that the results of one game had been posted , though I would pass on an update to our game.
The Hooded One's map set-up had two narrow passes through the woods for armor to pass from my (Allied) set up zone. He was surprised to find that he had allowed that.
What has resulted thus far has been a close quarters infantry battle at the main objective among the tall pines. The Italians have had the upper hand and if it hadn't been for a particularly effective, hastily set up, Vickers machine gun :halo: would likely have control of the flag early on. A Sherman has managed to gain access and target some of the Italians in those pines and stopped the advance(temporarily?) on the left flank of my bruised infantry company.
Getting turns out at a fair pace and hope to get some IP play tonight. The 16 hour time difference makes it tough.

I meant to pick 'City' but seem to have picked 'Town' by mistake. Lots of nice open streets wide enough to take 4 Shermans side by side, and a load of flat fields to cross to get there (and you know how slow anti-tank rifles are :( )

My Game with RangerBooBoo is now in turn 12. It has turned to a real brawl on my right flank. I think the only thing keeping my flank from completely rolling up is my platoon of Shermans. His Italians just about annihilated a full platoon of my Canadians. Whoever came up with 6 man squads should be put against a wall and shot. I feel like I put up a paper defense.

Anyway, victory points are about even, with 1 of four opbjectives a question mark, even though his troops, or what may be left of them surround it. 8 or 9 MGs and mortars, at close range, tend to have a negative effect on troop morale.

By the way, I think FTs should be outlawed.

(See map) Frontline = green line, Areas of current action = red lines.

My worthy Axis opponent :salute: has made a 3 prong INF attack upon the city (blue arrows) while trying to send some "armor" around my flanks. Both of his flanking armor were KIA, 1 by a Piat & 1 by a Humber, (one Sem is still alive north of the M4) but at the expense of one Humber kia on the west.

I decided to throw some power right into the center with one M4 and a M3 holding the line (green circles).

The Italians quickly filled the building just north of the M4: which was fine because 2 turns later I blew it up! :devious: The other "firefight" buildings are quickly filling up with new targets for me to kill.

There's a lot of open space & wide streets that the Italians will have to get across before they get close to the VF's. But I believe I have enough HMG's to hold the line. :)

I believe he means "no Panthers."

Why I doubt the Germans ever let their little buddy have any Panthers.

...paused for around 10 days due to work on my side.

I am assuming a deadline of 24th January - we are on plot 14 for me.
I'll arrange to stay up some nights in December and January and e-mail at Dirty Duck's convenience to ensure the battle is completed...just had a very hectic 17 hours - now 4 hours sleep and then to catch the first of four trains...lol.

Have fun guys :D

Scheduling some tcp play on the weekend sometime could finish most of a game if not all of it in a few hours. I highly recommend this for players having problems finding time to play overall.

RangerBooBoo and I have about 1 urn left to play. Due to the holiday, that won't happen until Sunday.

It is a close one, but I feel he has the edge. I have two minor objectives, he has a minor one and the major one. We both took some heavy casualties the last few turns. Unless something dramatic happens, I think he may get it on points. It also doesn't help when I have already lost two of my four Shermans,
UPDATE: Make that three of my four Shermans. :(

I've accepted surrender in my game with General Herr. After some intial armored car losses for both sides and a Italian truck convoy got shot up pretty good, General Herr's lone PZIII was taken out leaving my Stuarts rulers of the battlefield.

Iron Mike and myself just finished and I managed to luck out an Italian minor victory. Managed to take out one Canadian Sherman with indirect 105mm fire and got two others with lucky grenade bundles. It was a very close game until the very end one I killed one of the aforementioned Shermans and claim one last flag. Hats off to Iron Mike who had to suffer my good luck.

For the better part of the game, I thought I had him. My Sherman's were chasing him around. Then I got cocky, and strayed too far from infantry support. Down go two Shermans.

Bring me more.

Savatage and I are into the home straight. Should finish at the end of the week. A lot of artillery has fallen, Savatage holds the major flag and I hold the minor but there's plenty to happen before the end.

...I 've e-mailed my latest file to Dirty Duck. (I am at home - I have one day off a week.)

My accommodation is not secure and there is no internet access anyway...

I'll do what I can and arrange to do files quickly when I am at home.
...is the deadline 3rd week in January ?

Last hope for the Axis in my game. The sole PZIII has just taken out a Stuart and is bearing down on a Sherman :nofear: . If it gets it (unlikely but possible) anything may then happen. If it gets blown instead the game is over :hurt: .

10 turns to go and still I'm nowhere near any flags. Having said that anti-tank rifles have taken care of a few carriers and the odd sciout car - so how much infantry can he have ??? :whist:

I'll make myself available to Dirty Duck's timezone over Christmas and New Year - but I have not heard from him this last week - I sent him Movie 14 to view and send back on 28th November and have sent him a "re-send" today. I am next "back" on 13th December.

...at the moment the delay is mainly my "fault"for being away from any internet access - but I have a few days leave coming end of December / start of January.

Sincere regards,

A note of interest- since this is an "Elimination" Tourney players that fail to respond / return files without notice without a valid reason can be easily eliminated from this tournament.

Waleed's mention of being gone is such a valid notification (assuming he sent a note to his opponent as well).

Then- it is his responsibility to play as many "missed" turns as possibile upon returning "active."

We should still make the January deadline :)

My match against Palantir was a whitewash from the start.
I picked the wrong terrain and failed to see the PzIII option from the set up screen and cried  when i saw one of my supposed Tank Destroyers killed by a AT rifle.
In the end i had to surrender as the fire power from the Sherman and Priest (if i recall correctly) was to much for my men. Looking forward to getting some revenge soon.

Ps: to all my opponents I am still waiting for my internet connection to go on so i am sorry about the delays.
Can't wait to find out who has won the nail biter between me and 2054172.

19 Dec 05, 18:32
Somehow i pulled off a victory as the allies over vic charlie. I think we each gambled a bit purchasing units, and the terrain forced us to slug it out nose to nose. The battle just reached a pont where we really could not afford to move save for the shermans that i could keep back a bit and stop his large infantry force from gaining any ground.

The only ways to do that are:

1. Fewer scenario turns.
2. Require faster responses from the players.
3. Shorter Round times (= faster responses from players)

Anything can be adjusted for future rounds. Just need to know what everyone wants since we put on tourneys for them.

The following match is still running:

Geordie vs 7th Cav

However, since I have not been contacted by anyone involved concerning a "delay" those players / match will be dropped / deleted on 1/19.

If anyone is in contact with one of these players let them know they need to get in touch with me ASAP or they are out as of 1/19.

Matchups for Rd2 will be posted on 1/20: the round will begin on 1/21.

Rd one was pretty onesided... all settings will be pre-determined for Rd 2.

Just a note to any player that had a "slow" opponent/game (and to those slow players as well).

Normally if this occurs I can run a "ceasefire" for your match & award you a victory (and bonus if required).

However this requires that I have the passwords from both players.
In Rd 1 only 1/3 of the players cared to send me them.

What this means is- the "winning" player will most likely be awarded a Total Victory no matter what the real level of victory is (even if he is lossing but his opponent dissappears). So the quitting player will just lose more ladder points than he would have had he just sucked it up and played to the end.

Palantir
19 Jan 06, 15:35
Well, it looks like Geordie & 7th Cav have gone MIA with no word from either of them.
So they will be dropped from the tourney tonight.
