TOAW Beer League Pre-Season Sign-up Sheet

In a few months time, we at TOAW will be opening what we very, very...very lovingly call, the TOAW Beer League--modelled after America's twenty-fifth past-time, bowling. What we want to do here is offer an early Pre-Season of just one match to sorta get a feel for the idea and perhaps get some input from you guys for the full season, which would be something like 3 or 4 matches.

For Pre-Season play, we will not be taking player created teams in order to keep things balanced. I mean would you want to play against a team of Jamiam, Mantis, HEAT and Jesus? I think not. So we're going to take all you gutter kings drunk enough to try to impress the girls in the next lane, and sort you into teams according to the WARS rating.

The highest ranked player to sign up will go into team one; the second into 2, etc. If there are five teams, team five will get the fifth and sixth ranked players, and then we'll start back over the teams in reverse order. "Stop counting on your fingers, Mensch! The math works out...trust me."

All you have to do is post below and provide a valid email addy in whatever format you still think fools the spam scanners (hmm...sounds like the start of a Monty Python Sci-fi flick). Whatever, just sign-up already. I'm tired of talking....

If we get one more player, we can go with that. I don't want to say, one slot left, but if more than one person signs up, we'll need at least another 5...preferably 9. Otherwise, teams, as a whole, won't face off against one another, but each side will be staggered. In other words, team 1's Allies will play team 2's axis, but team 1's axis will play team 5's allies. If you get my drift.

So continue to sign-up....we'll go with what we get. Don't worry, if we need just one more player to form the fifth team, I'll jump in or twist an arm to fill the slot.

Again, teams will be created by using the WARS rating...

EDIT: Also four of you (Jim, Diesel, Velcrophobe and Jaydub) are not on the WARS ladder. Are you registered as a different name (he asks not sure if that's possible)? It isn't 1005 mandatory, but we'd like you to so that these games can be recorded. Again, they will be recorded as "unrated".

As it is, I'm giving you the beginning rating of 5000...

To clarify things since I've gotten some email/PMs about WARS. Wars is the ladder system used here at SZO. You can find it by clicking on the Wars (ladder) on the header just under the box that says "Welcome [member's name]." I'm not sure if you'll be shown on the ladder even if you register. It might only show your name if you've logged a game. But register anyway. I'm going to log those not on the WARS board with a 5000 which is what you start with. If you have any further questions, send me a PM.

Teams are posted on the Pre-Season webpage. And I collected everyone's email and sent out a mass email to all participants. Instructions are included in the email. If you didn't get an email from me, send me one at: menschenfresser@rcn.com and I will get things straightened out.

Team 1 will play Team 3
Team 2 will play Team 4

Each team must now select a captain, a team name and decide which of its two players will play the Axis and which two will play the Allies. Once I have all this info for all four teams, I will post the individual matches.

Again, there is a link to the scenario on the preseason webpage if you do not have it.

IMPORTANT!!!
I'll state this now even though play has yet to begin: the Allied player must use opart300 when starting the first turn. The reason for this is the unit limit and the size of this scenario. Two Weeks in Normandy is right at the limit for the regular opart.exe. Meaning that either side can only break down about half its total forcee (a rough estimate taken from memory). Due to the matrix of the scenario, this benefits the Allied player because it limits the German ability to spread out.

So I state again: Allied players, start the first turn with Opart300. If you don't already, you should be using opart300.exe for all your games. There is no reason to use the regular opart.exe. If this is unclear, email me.

I hope that we can get this part of the preparations done by the weekend.

On a side note, I'm sorry to those who had to be left out of the preseason due to the limits of needing four or eight more players.

The full season will start some time around the New Year (a guess). Look for it then. I really hope we can get a larger number of teams then.

You may want to link to the scenario, and/or attach it somewhere in this, or another, thread. There are several versions out there, and the one at the RD archive is not the most recent version. It should be 2.31, and was in the old WHQ archives. I don't think that it has been uploaded to the newer SZO archives.

We should all be playing the same version.

Shane, I really don't know how many I have left over. There are several previous posts but I haven't heard a strong 'yes' from anyone. So I just posted a short apology in case there was someone hoping to join, but missed the gun.

AND, I haven't heard from a single team concerning their name or who's playing what. Double time! If you need help I can start team emails.

Situation 'familiar' from other games: recommend 'Commo officer' for each team having a 'online' time equivelent to 'east coast usa-england' at first.

Commo officer= someone who is 'online-alive' for the overlap, set up to use most common 'instant msgrs', etc.....hence, immediate news/orders sent-recieved.

In one case, I was 'the commo officer' for an online clan, simply due to the fact that I was on the 'vampire shift'. ie: was awake all night with a -8hr gmt shift, which overlapped the rest of the 'clan's sleep period. This meant that just as I was 'going to bed', the clan-ldr was comming online, and the XO would be coming online in another 3-4 hours.

This is especially usefull in the case of 'voice communications' software/ and-or IRC channels...

Once you find such a person, 'title' him as desired..

Just a thought............really doesn't matter in the course of PBEM rounds, eh?

S'okay. Knowing my busy schedule, I actually started the turn about a week ago, and got through with some of the initial overruns. Then I saved it, shelved it, until I knew the tourney was going to start, and who I'd be playing against. Now, of course, I'm busier than a cat covering up sh*t on a hot, tin roof.

As this was my first ever game against a human opponent I found it a hell of a lot more interesting and challenging than playing against the P.C.

To clarify reporting games, now that some of you are finished...

You can report your games, just make sure you check the "unrated" button when you do. It divides points evenly between both players and does not add or subtract from your WARS rating.

And send me a final .sal if you have one. I think I'm going to collect them and make them available from the Preseason webpage as an aftermath AAR.

Well, I'm having trouble accessing the TOAW ftp and can't seem to update the tourney webpage. However, of the two games still open; one has been declared an OV for Foggy and OL for Mr Clark. I've contacted both parties and they agreed.

Jaye's and Gunner's game is only half way through. We're still in negotiations as to how to solve it. However, unless they can finish it by next weekend, neither party will gain a victory. Since both parties expressed guilt in the slowness of the game, the likely decision will give them both losses.

That said, the Kilroys from Dover Bar & Grill are definitely the winners, having won every game.

Last place goes to The Operational Art of Four...having lost every game. :(

If Jaye and Gunner finish and Gunner gets an OV, then the two would tie for second. However, Gunner has indicated to me that his Germans are in a bad situation, so it seems unlikely.

As far as the full season goes, I'm working on a list of scenarios. I am taking suggestions. They need to be medium to small scenarios with no more than 30 turns. If the scenario is really small, then it can go up to 40...but that has to be really small. It isn't important that a scenario be balanced. However, it can't be sloppy or have cheap and easy ways to win. And keep in mind that the more balanced it is, the more varied the final results will be.

With 2 Weeks in Normandy, it seems either side can win, but you either win big or lose big. No draws.

I think if a battle isn’t balanced, each opponent plays that battle of a side and then of the other (so they play twice; for example, in 2 Weeks in Normandy, since the german side and then, since the allied side).
For the ladder, if a battle is OV (when one play of a side) and it is OL (when one play of the other side), the result is: Draw.

Both players should send the turns at the same time.

I never got around to organizing the full season. Got bogged down in picking scenarios and then TOAW3 delayed things further and finally I just left it hanging. With JL running a pretty massive tourney at the same time, I figured the idea could move to the back of the shelf for the next quiet time.

Probably a good thing for everyone at this point. I'm involved (if only slightly) in moderating JL's tourney. I have three 1 on 1 games going, and The Great War Multiplayer. That's enough for now.

If/when it ever starts again I wouldn't mind opening a collection on prizes. I have a few. To generate interest. And I would like to seek out some strong team captains to guide his team to victory. The idea is for the four players on each team to help each other out, give advice, etc.

I think to lead, like this one, a three round TOAW III tournament based on three period of time
- WWI
- WWII
- Modern ( 1950 up to now)

folks will define which scenario to use for each period

The list of scens I had been compiling for possible use was short, and has been made shorter because of TOAW3, but here is what I remember and what I've added since then:

-Gothic Line
-Mount Cer
-El Alamein (not sure whether to use Daniel's or Bob's CFNA#6)
-Petsamo-Kirkenes 44
-Curt's Blitzkrieg
-etc, etc, etc

The idea was to make a list of candidates and then let all those who signed up vote on which ones to use. I was actually thinking of running a four or five game full season.
