Just something I've thought about, but have yet to try out.

Say I've got a regular infantry platoon that has progressed through to Veteran by mainly hit & run actions and small, intense firefights. If I continue to use them in this role, is there any point at which they could possibly become an SF unit, or something even close to that level of proficiency? I'm thinking No, since it depends a lot on their equipment?

Units can't change icons, except by embarking, or in the case of ski and bicycle units which are affected by the weather.

Proficiency is unaffected by unit icons or composition, and unit icons have nothing to do with unit composition.

Unit experience (proficiency) is completely separate from an icon-granted ability, like that granted by the SF icon. Your infantry may gain proficiency up to 100%, but it will never become anything other than an infantry unit.

So, to answer your question, "No."
