Quake IV (http://www.quake4game.com/)
I can't wait for this one... although I wish it was following up the original Quake rather than Quake II.

Looks like it'll be an Xbox360 launch title! Just what I need for my new machine :)

Talk about wasting a perfectly good game...

Haha...I would agree, but this new generation of consoles aren't exactly wimpy by PC standards.

I've failed to be terribly impressed by much of what I've seen of the X-Box 360.

I despair, I really do
Will your PC play it?
I should still be able to play it on medium to high, although we'll see for sure when it comes out. I know I'll be able to play it, I am curious if this will be the first game I'll have to drop down to medium for. :nervous:

I agree, most of it hasn't been spectacular - but I have seen a couple (one of the next-gen NBA games). Plus, these are only launch titles - hopefully developers will take more advantage of the hardware later in the systems life.
Does QIV use the DIII engine?

Yeah, funny how it has huge outdoor environments.:p
I don't understand why people would pay such a huge amount of money to buy a console to play whatever games microsoft throws to them, when they could take the same amount of money and build a decent computer that can do everything

300 bucks won't buy a good computer, and it won't buy nearly as good a computer as the Xbox 360 is. In my view, these consoles are actually a good deal.

It will probably be 18 months to two years before a mainstream PC will be able to touch the next-gen consoles. It should be noted that theses next-gen units will be 'high-definition tv' compatible meaning that, unlike the PS2, the gamecube or Xbox, they will be operating at similar resolutions to PCs (assuming you have the tv of course :) ). I'll be interested to see what 'Quake IV' looks like on the '360 given that it will be using a modified 'Doom 3' engine.

I could probably upgrade to a higher spec graphics card and get to medium, but then that will probably cost me the same as the new Xbox - it's a bit of a 'no-brainer' for me, especially as I'm comfortable playing 'shooters' on PC or console formats.

Before mainstream PC's maybe, but it won't touch many gamer's PCs already. I'd also be pretty surprised if the console version even looks as good as the 'medium' on a PC... I'm not really that down on consoles, I just think it's funny, every time a new generation comes out people seem to think it's going to blow PCs away...

I think you're in the minority there. Just think when the Xbox came out it led with 'Halo', yet the best the PC had to offer was 'Return to Castle Wolfenstein'. The analysis that I've seen is that the '360 will be significantly faster and render in far more detail than even the top spec Alienware machines.
However, until the game is out and fired up on our machines this discussion is a bit pointless :) Not only that but I'm starting to sound like an Xbox 'fanboy'

As far as CPU processing power goes, the Xbox 360 isn't anything to sneeze at. Three, 3.2 ghz powerPC-based cores - thats a lot of power (the high-end PC's now have only 2 cores). Its GPU is a little harder to evaluate, since it is a new (and weird) configuration - but it should be powerful by todays standards.
The PS3, on the other hand would blow most current gamer PCs away. Only dual nVIDIA 7800 GTX's could best it in the GPU department - and the Cell processor looks to be a gigantic number-cruncher.
I don't see how this new generation of consoles can be seen as that inferior to the PC. 5 years down the road maybe - but not now. We could even see the Cell in tomarrow's PCs.

Because I can write a paper about Clark Gable on my computer

Take note, I was mainly talking about the XBox 360, powerful yes, but I'm 90% sure that there are PCs more powerful than it out there. I'm not going near commenting on the PS3 yet... I have no idea what that can really do, and I'm honestly a little scared of it.

Well, we were talking about graphical power...which isn't required for Word documents ;p.
And considering the Xbox 360 is only 300 dollars, I wouldn't expect it to be everything a PC is.
You could probably build a better PC than the Xbox 360, but for nowhere near $300.

No argument there.
The core xbox 360 is 300$, most people will be forced to pay 400-500 for all of it's features (such as the ability to play xbox 1 games)
and games are more expensive for the xbox 360

Unless you need extra controllers, there isn't much else you need. It is still MUCH (hundereds and hundreds of dollars, if not thousands) cheaper than a PC.
The game price is an interesting issue. I wonder if gamers will put up with 60 bucks....

Wow... you're the first person I've heard of not saying the $300 version isn't an absolute rip off and a horrible business scheme... Just about every game related site has complained about the fact they even offer the $300 version...

I know alot of people who wont even put up with a 50$ price tag. I can see them charging extra for the wireless controller, but the hard drive and cables should come standard, especially if the hard drive is required to play xbox 1 games.

Well.....for someone strapped for cash that doesn't have an HDTV or broadband internet, I think it is a good deal. What is wrong with offering a lesser version?

the cables and hard drive should be included in the lesser version, since it is a "next generation" console.

The cables would be utterly useless for someone without an HDTV (regular A/V cables come in the core package). The hard drive is debatable - I don't know what the cost of buying one seperately, but it shouldn't be the 100 dollar difference - so it would still be saving money. Not everyone needs backwards compatibility, music, videos, and whatever else people put on the hard drive. Plus, the hard drive isn't so "standard" anyway - the PS3 won't come with one.
As long as the system still functions, I have no problem with MS offering a lesser system.

Looking at 'Quake IV' (linking to the original title of the thread  ), projected shop price for the Xbox 360 version is about 12% higher than the PC version. In the UK this is no different to the pricing structure of games for current gen consoles, or at least as they were a year/18 months back. The market simply won't bear a large price hike so I can't see there being one.
8.2/10 from IGN (http://pc.ign.com/articles/658/658263p3.html)
Despite its shortcomings, Quake 4 is a genuinely fun game. It just won't keep you entertained for as long as you expect.... There's a lot of shiny wrapping, but the gift inside is disappointingly small.
Hmm, I'll probably be snagging it anyway, especially since I no longer have a copy of Quake 2 anyway. :p Might wait a bit though, gotta pay for FEAR first since I preordered that. Mmmm FEAR.

Speaking of which, it got a 9.2/10 from IGN (http://pc.ign.com/articles/657/657310p4.html)
I feel like I've been waiting since Half-Life 2 for a really good, story-based shooter, and that's a lot of competitors in between there and here, for a guy in my line of work. FEAR has that immediacy, and that ambition to suck the player in with vivid immediacy and top-of-the heap production values.
If it just weren't so scary....
I think the guy meant to say he's been waiting since Half-Life 1.... :whist:

QuakeIV received a fair to poor rating in the PCgamer review. the reviewer gave QuakeIV a final mark of 70%.
high: loads of action, gruesome visuals, Q3DM17 with doom3 graphics (? )
Lows: uninspired gameplay, terrible plot, no multiplayer bots
overall: this old-school shooter suffers from modern game design.
OVERALL SCORE: 70% GOOD
enjoy
