Title: GB- Jort v1.2
Type: Allied Attack: Semi-Historical
Date: 15 August 1944
Location: Normandy.
Region: France
Weather: Clear, very dry
Terrain: Rural
Turns: 25
Size: Medium
Points: AX 3800 / AL 7600
Best Played: PBEM
Designers: Guillaume - "Bogdan" & Kerry- “Palantir”
STRATEGIC SITUATION:
On August 14th, Lieutenant-General Simonds, commander of the II Canadian Corps, was ordered to capture Falaise as soon as possible in “Operation Tractable.” Their orders were to then move eastwards to Trun in order to prevent the German Seventh Army and the 5th Panzer Division from escaping. The occupation of Falaise was to be the mission of the 2nd Canadian Division. Meanwhile, the 4th Armoured Division, which was to move directly on to Trun, ran into some difficulties near the town of Damblainville: the Germans held a hill from which they could rain down heavy mortars and machine gun fire stopping the Canadians from crossing the Ante River. Nearby, the advanced troops of the 1st Polish Armoured Division, under Major-General Stanislaw Maczek, were assigned to capture the village of Jort.
After the complete German disaster of “Operation Luttich,” the axis troops are withdrawing everything they can from Normandy: the advancing allied troops are quickly creating a new "Kessel" around Falaise. Now, as British and Canadian units are pushing southward toward Falaise itself, and American forces are rapidly approaching northward towards Trun and Chambois: the 1st Polish Armored Division attacks eastward, in order to close the trap around the last German defenders. The Poles without delay must pass the Dives River and defeat the defenders above before achieving a complete encirclement: Chambois is only a few kilometers south-east of their location.
TACTICAL SITUATION:
After several fierce clashes west of the Dives River, the Polish troops have finally reached the vicinity of Jort, a small rural village, which is one of the last organized German defensive positions. However, the currently shallow but swampy River Dives Valley has to be crossed first. The bulk of the Polish regiment has arrived only to find one of two key bridges across the river destroyed. On the opposite bank, the Germans are hiding and dug in waiting to prevent the crossing. Now, in the last moments of the morning the 10th Polish Dragoons Regiment is ready to launch a decisive strike against assorted elements of the German resistance. Can the last line of German soldiers hold the village of Jort?
