I just finished a short test about air power and air defence. Results are promising to us:
I had 4x KUB launchers, 3x KRUG, 2x Silka, 4x Strela-1. 4x Su-22 with AS-7 were used.
US had 6x F-4E, and 2x A-10, 2x M163 and 3x Chapparal.
KURG launchers did not score any hit, they are clumsy,as in real life. KUBs killed the first two F-4Es, however, they scored hits on both Shlikas.
Following it, the problem was, that they have expended all missiles for this turn, therefore following strikes did not meet any long-range SAM threat.
Strela-1s were able to damage 1 A-10 (they are not good evading, but very resistent). However, further strikes devastated 2 KRUG and 2 KUB launchers.
Then Su-22s attacked Chapparals with good results. First of all, Chapparals did not fire back! M163s were useless, they did not score a hit. All four Chapparals were destroyed.
Lessons learned:
Our SAMs are good and capable, especially KUBs. However, they can be "saturated" and destroyed by multiple airstrikes. Since they attack off-map, we should deploy them in forests, so it is harder to strike them. KRUGs are rather useful as supplement, not as indipendent unit. It may be a good idea to put smoke around our SAM launchers, so that enemy air power has problems attacking them (their radar will see through easily). Downside is, enemy artillery will them find them.
Strela-1s are not particularly effective. Since they make smoke after launch, they should change position after each launch. Same applies to Shilkas. They should use bounding overwatch, so in each turn half of them is ready to fire.
Chapparals are not particularly good, M163s are not either. We have the upper hand, I think.
