View Full Version : Downloaded a lot of scenarios from The Blitz--hardly any of them work

I have a bit of a problem. Recently I downloaded nearly all the EF scenarios from www.theblitz.org
Only problem is, a large majority of these scenarios don't work with my version of EFII! I have version 1.03 and I installed it from the World at War CD. What is the latest version of EF out there, and is there a patch that I can get for it that'll make the levels work?

What you'll have to do is open each of the scenario maps in the map editor and select "Save".
Once you do this, the scenarios will be converted to 1.03 standard.

The .map files, not the scenario files.
You can access the map editor via going into the game itself. Or, since I use the editors on a regular basis, I have created a desktop icon by sliding the efmap.exe file from windows explorer to the desktop.

Cheech, you may also have to edit the map if you find that it has hedgerow hexesides. The best way to find them is to rotate the map. They show up clearly. :thumup:
This happens every time a map created in version 1.02 is attempted in version 1.03.

I know about the re-saving the map trick in the map editor, but this leaves, to me at least, the very annoying bocage and, or High wall problem all over the map. I have found a way to get around this and to all extents and purposes fully convert a scenario no strings attached.
here goes:
1) as you might expect the map is the problem. Open the scenario map in the map editor and then save it.
2) open the *.map file in a text editor. You will see several blocks of symbols coding out the map (you can really see how the map is coded). Scroll down until you get to a block that is all numbers. It is a large block always near the bottom, and is the only block to be all numbers (at least as far as I have seen). Delete this entire block (trust me).
3) reopen the map in the map editor and the save it again.
4) the scenario should now function just fine. The whole process takes very little time as I have not yet found a scenario for which this doesen't work

Hedgerow fix.

Delete this entire block from the 1 down to the end. If there are more than one block below then clear them all out. Then save map.
3) Reopen the map in the map editor and the save it again. It should now have no bocage or walls. However.....
4) EF Gold erases your location labels, (at least that has been my experience),
So open your old EFII map, and copy and paste your locations list at the bottom of the new number block that appears when you make the above save. Thus:

5) the map should now function.

Got your message and attachment. From your discription I think you missed a step in the map conversion from EFII to EF1.03.
Got to follow the steps in order.
Open and save map old EFII map in EFGold, (yes this gets you headgerows).
Open map as text and clear number blocks below the
0
0
0
0 row, and save as text.
Open in EFGold and save. Now you should see no headgerows. Got no labels though, so ...
Open original map as text and copy labels.
Paste labels on new map opened as text below the 0 rows, thus:

Something else for everyone to keep in mind is that the above instructions are needed only if you are using the EFII version provided with the World at War expansion.
If you've upgraded your EFII install with the Fall of the Reich expansion, the above steps are not needed when converted maps from 1.02 to 1.03.
Merely selecting Save will do the trick.

OK, I just tried the above method on one scenario and... it worked!!! :cheeky: No more stupid hedgerows in Russia! Now to apply the same method to the other 200 or so scenarios that I downloaded... :shock:

I've long since installed Fall of the Reich, and perhaps as a result, I've never had any problems with any East Front II scenarios.
However, when I try to mod an original East Front scenario (I can mod EF II just fine) it won't let me mod it, because I don't have East Front (as Jason Petho recently pointed out in in 'scenario design' section on the forum).
I'm still in the process of 'updating' my East Front scenarios - I've downloaded many hundreds total, and nearly 100 in just the last few days. I shudder at the thought of updating my West Front scenarios - that's gonna take me a month! But there's just something neat about having all that variety when I press the 'new game' button.

I did not know that! :rolleyes: Almost by default, for any custom scenarios, I usually go directly to the file in word to check it out and make the neccessary changes.

That's about the only advantage of having the FOTR disc... making conversions easier. Makes sense though!
