Did the game work WITH the CD in when you installed 1.06?
Try this.
Uninstall the game.
Reinstall from CD and test to make sure it works.
Install 1.06 (full patch!) and test to make sure it works.
Modify registry to point to your nocd directory (as in the nocd instructions)
Take out CD and see if it works.
There was also a forum message a month or two ago about the new versions of the game from Take-2 being a little strange. I don't remember off-hand what this issue was, but a search might find it.
We'll figure it out and have you running in no time!

The quality of the Cd leaves something to be desired...
The label is torn and "bubbled" in several places...the Cd has stamping blemishes and my "guide" was stapled wrong
If I wasnt so addicted to GTA III and Vice City I might be mad :p
Let me get to uninstalling and Ill see

Argg
Well...good news and bad news
Good news:
Game works
Game works in 1.06
Bad news:1.06 causes more problems than it solves
I get that bug where an info screen goes off the screen if you leave it idle for about 10 seconds ( I had the same problem in TOAW II)
I also get some very serious sound bugs
Poping...screeches...and the sound stutters every few seconds and stays off for a full second
I dunno what im going to do....I think im going back for more experimenting

When you go to help/version does it show version 1.06? I want to confirm that you are in fact using the new patch (sometimes it won't install properly).

Yep
1.06 is listed
Make sure you are running ACoW in "Win95 compatibility" mode.

Ok thanks...that helped alot
One track still pops skips and crackles...but I think TOAW just doesnt like my soundcard....but otherwise the game is running good
Thanks for the help
Actually, try running it in Win2000 compatibility mode, and see if your sound clears up. I've never tried this, but you might also try running the game through VDMSound. (http://www.ece.mcgill.ca/~vromas/vdmsound/download/index.html)

Fall, do you by chance have an Nforce motherboard with onboard sound? Those are known to have issues with sound on a host of games.
Just a stab in the dark, but want to eliminate all possibilities for you.
