Does anyone know if artillery is more effective at lower ranges? If your arty has a max range of 10, does it pack more of a punch at range 3 than it does at range 8?

I've always assumed that it did but now that I look for it in the manual I can't find anything about it.

My understanding of this is based largely on posts by HEAT and JAMiAM on similar subjects and goes thusly....

It depends on the composition of the artillery unit- if it all has the same range, it will be equally effective at maximum or less range. I can't say that I've ever noticed a difference except with varying loss tolerances selected, regardless of the range involved..assuming that arty unit isn't suddenly on or behind enemy lines, that is!

In most cases though (as you are probably well aware), an arty unit will have varying pieces with varying ranges. If you opt to use the unit at the longest range available, then only your larger caliber guns will fire and your smaller ones will not participate, as they are out of range....which then decreases the effectiveness of the bombardment.

Obviously, if my understanding of how the game engine handles this is wrong, I'd appreciate being gently corrected (or enrolled in General HEAT's arty refresher clinic, whichever is easier!).

artillery as a single tube is same effectiveness at any range- unless ER then half effectiveness for last third of it's stated range.

Within an artillery unit you can have tubes with different ranges- only those in range will fire (oddly enough using up the same amount of supply)

After digging around in the online Help, this is my conclusion as well. If you have an artillery unit composed entirely of, say 350mm guns, they will fire at the same strength at every range. If the guns are specifically mentioned as being Extended Range (ER) guns, then they will shoot the last 1/3 of their range at half strength.
