View Full Version : Hungarian Unit info needed
Double Deuce

I am working on the NATO vs WP Campaign and need to put together an Ad-hoc Hungarian unit based on real unit names/identification in service during 1984. Basically it would be an Infantry Regiment(-) in size that has been in sustained combat in Central Europe for about 6 months. It will have armor and/or other units attached (maybe even an air assault/airborne Company) but will still be under-strength as far as Regiments go.
Ideally what I would like to have is;
1x Motorized Rifle Battalion
1x Tank Battalion
1x Mixed Battalion (assorted air assault, airborne, naval, support units)
Any suggestions?

Hi DD,
Let me take a look at my WP resources and get back to you. I will send it by email ok. Have you done the West German units yet?

Haven't done the West Germans yet. What I am thinking is a PanzerGrenadier Brigade (-). It will be considerably less than full strength from previous combat operations as will most units in the Campaign.

I have put on a draft in another forum. Numbers of units will come later, if you find it OK. It is basically a mixed unit, with mobile leftover elements from different larger formations. If the war went on for months, probably this would have remained. (Or, like in WW2 with German, most Hungarian units would be under Soviet command at battalion/company level. Especially if there are doubts about their reliability in the political sense.)
I am also trying to get a training book from an officer friend of mine, which was used in officers training in the 80s.

Pannonicus this is great info. I am just about done the DRAFT Pact Forces with the exception of the Hungarians. It doesn't have to be 100% historically accurate so to leave a little to the imagination and flavor of the campaign.

Here is my draft of a Hungarian "Mixed" Regiment. It could be actually a mix of remaining mobile elements in that sector. Numbers of units will follow later, I am still doing some research. (from 1985 we partially abandoned the regiment system, and moved to brigade structure, so it is a little bit of confusing time).
Feel free to change!

Overall command would be assumed by MN 11. Tank Div.One question. What does the MN stand for?
AND more importantly, can this force be built "purchased" in WinSPMBT or would alternate units need to be substituted?

MN = Magyar Néphadsereg = People's army of Hungary
(Magyar = Hungarian, nép = people, hadsereg = army)
(nowdays it is called
MH = Magyar Honvédség = Hungarian Defense Forces)
(Honvéd = something like home defender Honvédség = something like home defense organization )
Hope this helps :)

Thanks Artur. That helps immensely.
OT - Have you had any contact with Pal Woje lately? I hadn't and so just sent him an email. I have need of his assistance.
No I have not. He told me that he quit the COCAT project quite a long time ago when he stated the same on the combat-campaigns forum.

Just as a historical note:
To complicate the issue, each unit had a number like MN 6854, which was completely random. In its contacts/contracts with the civilian world, they only used this number, as it did not tell anything about the type of the unit.
Sometimes the "real" name of the unit was not real, especially in the case of sensitive/new technology.
Scud-B missile units were usually designated as Tank Battalions
Luna-M (FROG-7) missile units as Armored Recon Battalions
In early 60s, SAM units (armed with S-75 DVINA komplexes) were also given such disguises.

Some more info
Tank Battalion:
21x T-72M
10x T-55AM
1x D-944 (PSZH-IV)
3x Trucks for general transport purposes (in this case, they could be ammo trucks)
4x trucks with cranes that carried KMT demining devices. 1 tank in each platoon could be equipped with them if needed.
(Company= 3x3 tanks, + co. commander's)
Mech Inf. > you can take the Soviet unit as the basis, but with only BMP-1. AT equipment is SPG-9 RR and AT-3 Malyutka.

The problem is, that in 1985 we moved from regimental system to brigade-based in most cases. But it helps a little bit. Give me a few days, and I will come back!

DRAFT Hungarian information posted based on discussions in this thread.
Pannonicus, please make sure I properly translated your postings to the OOB unit names and structures. Some units will need to be broken down into actual SPMBT purchases (i.e. individual vehicles and squads).
