View Full Version : Track that Unit! Update (8/14 END!)
Welcome to the first installment of “Track that Unit.”
In a new segment of the forum we will follow the “actions” of a randomly selected soldier/vehicle in a QB combat. Further “snapshots” will follow as the battle progresses.
(Future installments will also depend on member feed back!):halo:
Today’s 20 minute battle pits a fresh but aggressive Rookie Battalion Commander (me) :ar15: against the skilled and ever deadly Field Marshal (but clearly battle-fatigued) “Scipio.” :whlchr:
To kick it off we will be tracking the progress of a Russian SMG squad of which this soldier is a critical part. That lucky soldier is of course “MOE.” (Every unit has a “Moe” in it, trust me.) He’s the bright fellow on the right in the pict below, his squad leader has just yelled “What’s that to the left!” Notice his instinctive reaction to guard the other side…
Moe’s fellow squad members are, Boris, (to his right), Yakov, (in the front) Yerik, Sarha, Lesta, Gaurie & Fjodor. The other squad members are, of course out of view, they've learned to stay as far away from MOE as possibile, so you probably won't see much of them.
The commander has just give the order to advance, 4 objectives lie to our front, let the battle commence and the fortunes of MOE & his squad be honorable!

Would have been better if the attachment had held! :o

You have bought a gamey *giant* SMG squad! :surprise:
Guys, correct me if I am wrong, but if you look closely you can see that Moe is in fact wearing eyeliner.
Perhaps Kerry could explain why a so-called randomly picked soldier just happens to be the only one in the unit wearing make-up.

During those years germans didn't like guys who have a makeup.
Bad news for mister Moe.
I guess you "missed" the report about Moe's winter "conscript" mission. :(
Lets just say he's no longer allowed to carry the units captured German flamethrower.
Did I also forget to mention that there used to be an 8th member in his squad? :dead:
Moe said the only good thing to come out of it was, "at least we had something to keep us warm through the night!" :surprise:
See, I told you there was a reason most of his fellow squad members stay away from him (not counting that sub-zero night of course)!
Kerry :cheeky:
Hahahahaha, this entire thing is hilarious!
Looking forward to following this thread. (5 will get you 10 that Moe is the first one to die; I love irony!)
Come on MOE! We're rooting for you!

Oh, hoo, ha, hey - I know this map!!! But never taken a look on it from the Soviet side!
Well, I will show you how fatigued I am! :whist:

Place your bets gentlemen! :D

Weird how CM infantry ends every move/run/advance/assault in the kneeling position, guns held across their chests and showing off their big shiny boots -- kinda looks like "Soldier of Fortune" meets "River Dance."

At least it's normal for the Russian. They automatically fall into position to start a cosaks dance :)
TtU UPDATE!
The battle is only 3 minutes old, MOE's squad has advanced, however it has still fallen behind.
BUT!
MOE has claimed his first 3 kills!!! :surprise:
Lets listen in shall we and see how it happened.
:)
MOE:
“There they are those three little black suited beasts sneaking through the brush. Closer, come closer, closer…: OPEN FIRE!!! SSSST! SSSSST! Got him now the other two before they run away! SSSST, SSSST two down! SST!
Oh no, running out of ammo only one more volley left- SSSsssst! Got him, blew them away! YEA!
Squad leader Yakov Starikov:
“Damn it MOE, zip up your pants and quit pissing on those ants, we don’t have time for that, get back in formation, we’re falling behind the others!
Why my squad, why mine Mr. Joseph? :argh:
I should have listened to my papa & joined the navy.”
:whist:
UP next- MOE'S letter home, if that German Panther moving up gives him time!!!! :OHNO:

Before somebody put me to court martial for gamey unit purchase... just for the record: it wasn't my fault that I have a Panther! My units were auto purchased!!!:crosseye:
Well, there's a few lost bets: obviously Moe was not the first down.
At least it will keep this thread alive for a little longer.
What happens when Moe dies?

MOE DIE?! :surprise:
:OHNO:  :stop:
Oh ye have little faith in the Guards ability to take out that Panther. :nofear:
We've got more 14.5mm ATR's than you can shake a dead Iraqi at.
BTW- MOE has a question, "How many Molotov’s does it take to knock out a crack SS Panther?" :D
Hey, he got those 3 ants didn't he; 2 more and he'll claim ACE staus!
Kerry :cheeky:
{Note- To make for more interesting “field reporting” my worthy opponent Scipio has agreed not to peek at further “intel” reports concerning MOE.} Thanks!
Five minutes in and the action is literally exploding all over the battlefield.
Top pict: Here we see MOE’s platoon racing for a tree-line in a wide flanking movement around the objectives. (That’s our heroic lad closet & to the right high-tailing it with the rest, but as usual trailing in the rear.) On the ridge above we see a PSW 232-8 AC exploding and to the right the T-70 that just nailed it.
Bottom Pict: However, in the "topdown" pict rolling down the ridge behind our gallant lad are 2 German Armored Cars. That’s MOE’s squad at the very bottom.
I decided to add the yellow targeting line, well because that’s my T-34 targeting his PSW! Just a few more seconds and… :skull:
Kerry :cheeky:
Hello all,
MOE has been quiet for a few turns because well... lets just look & listen in.
"NAPTIME! Who just ordered a company wide naptime!!!!!" :D
{that's Moe second from left, "napping."}
Actually MOE's company(+) is in the process of making a wide flanking move. Boring I know.
That's Moe's squad highlighted lower right and that "faint" red circle at the upper left, is Scipio's Panther playing "King of the Hill."
The earlier armored car threats to the rear were neutralized when one was killed and one "conveniently" backed off the map just before a T-34 fired. (I hope I get credit for that as a kill!)
The AC by the German flag is in full retreat as another T-34 has him in his LOS.
Kerry :cheeky:
Casualties!
Some confusion about an “unordered” nap time is over, the company will continue it’s advance.
Twelve minutes in and Moe’s flanking company is ordered to rush a pine forest line.
As we can see Scipio has a hot reception waiting for them.
Within seconds Moe’s squad comes under some very direct and accurate fire. If you have good eyes and can spot his “eyeliner” you’ll notice Moe has slipped to the right rear behind Boris. Good news for Moe very bad news for Boris...
Because Boris, Yerik, Sarha, Lesta, & Gaurie are quickly hit by automatic fire, while Moe, Fjodor and squad leader Yakov race on for cover knowing for certain that poor Boris took one in the head.
The fate of the rest of their comrade’s is not immediately known.
Will Moe & his comrades make it to safety? Stay tuned for the next turn!
And here it is!
Duck, sneak & cover!
Top:
What’s left of Moe’s squad & platoon wiggled and jiggled through a wall of hot flying lead and successfully crawled to the edge of the Pine Forest. (Yellow circle in bottom shot is Moe.) Enemy fire is currently passing harmlessly overhead.
Unfortunately the rest of the company not having the raw nerves of steel like Moe (or the stupidity) withdrew back to safety and cover. (to the left on overview) But an entire platoon was still eliminated (top left). :skull:
The EXPECTED covering mortar barrage was foiled when a (superior?) HQ passing in the rear took away the mortars spotting C&C HQ. (That really sucked!)
It was probably Moe's fault, he had just "ordered" out for some Hungarian food on the companies only radio...
Enough force is still advancing and if the mortar’s get their stuff together another rush to clear the forest and join up with the heroic Moe is expected shortly.
:nofear:
Overview map:
At the top left and right in the overview you can see the results of a hull down surprise flank shot at the Panther; which due to the repeatedly poor marksmanship of my T-34 :kotz: allowed him to leisurely turn and blast my ass off!
The death of a fleeing German AC at center by another T-34 has reverted the main VF to neutral.
Kerry :cheeky:
Come on MOE, get off the phone!

How many Russian casualties could have been avoided if Uncle Joe had only invested $$ in "call waiting"?
:hmmm:

Holy S#@$! I'm a "trooper." When did that happen?:ar15:
We're into the 23rd minute of a 20 minute battle!
MOE’s been pretty quite for the last 6 minutes or so as his depleted squad of 3 men (Moe, LMG'er Fjodor and squad leader Yakov) have been “pinned” down (green circle). Recovering about two minutes ago they took off on a wide encircling move that saw Yakov catch a bullet in the thigh and put out of action. Now only Moe & Fjodor presses on to help trap any Germans escaping the pocket.
As you can see center the boys have made a massive single assault on the VP capturing it. (even without the help of the dang mortar team who sent every frigging shell off target into the wheatfield! those lossers are now part of the assualt wave :D )
If time allows the entire horde will be swinging left to rush the Panther.
To the left around the main VP the battle continues against Scipio’s cautiously advancing Panther. Unfortunately for me none of the INF around the flag has anything left that can hurt the Panther, but he doesn’t know that so he’s keeping his distance!
All 4 targeting lines are from 14.5mm ATR’s. I’m hitting him 90% of the time but of course their main goal here is to give him a headache and keep him occupied.
This might end in a “draw” next turn but with the loss of all my vehicles he should get the advantage.
BTW- I "know" Moe is still alive: the guy wearing eyeliner is still visibile!:crosseye:
Kerry :cheeky:
Another "interesting" event is taking place way across the map.
What do you get when you have an "out of ammo" AC retreating and a fantatical German HQ bent on getting a ride? :(
A chase scene from hell!
The bottom picture shows the starting and ending points (so far) of the "Great Chase." Every turn I expected the INF to call it a day, but noooo, he keeps on coming. (a follow up wil be attached if warrented).
I'd run right over them if I thought I could! :D
Kerry :cheeky:
The battle ends as worn out Field Marshal Scipio pulls one out. :hmmm:
MOE’s battle ended with a Tactical Defeat, but he survived to fight another day. :D
As any good veteran will tell you when the battle's over it’s time for a nap, and since Moe's a vet he quickly takes advantage of the short lull in activities. That’s Moe all alone in the foreground catching a few quick winks. (Even as the Panther blasts away 150 meters up the hill and with all the carnage around the flag, 118 “eliminated” Inf and 52 inf “casualties.”) :surprise:
Overview:
The blue squares show 2 of 3 dead T-34’s the Panther shot and the red squares 4 of 5 dead AC’s/ Scout cars.
The circles upper right shows the final positions of the fanatical German HQ & the out of ammo AC (my last) who was finally able to race away.
Regrettably (in the random selection) Moe was detailed to the wide flanking platoon and although he came under fire several times & pinned was never able to return fire. :crosseye:
But as in real war many are called to serve but few actually fire on the enemy. Moe probably should have been conscripted as a tanker- but then he’d be dead right now!
Thus ends the first (?) attempt at “Track That Unit.” :halo:
{Happily we now also have other players posting their own battlefield Action Reports. If someone wants to start another “TTU” let me know or post if you have a comments about this TTU or the concept. :whist:
If not Moe was never known for commonsense and those German Panthers sure look comfortable!
