Let me know, but it seems as though this website devoted to TOAW has gotten slow in its old age.

I remember the good ole' days of 2002, 2003 & 2004 being chalked full of some of the finest threads & tournaments.

Perhaps the fact that TOAW has been out for as long as it has.....

Perhaps the fact that the names synonymous with the top of the ladder have ceased to contribute to the site....

Perhaps the fact that the last tournament that started so well, ended on a sour note.....

Perhaps being one of the first that ran out & bought the game in year 2000, I am now one of the last to hold out on a slowing (dying?) game system....

Perhaps I am way off line....

Perhaps I am not the only one who thinks this way....

Perhaps I have used perhaps too many times....

Any comments?

Meh. The TOAW community has its ups and downs. I think enough interesting things are going on at the moment (for instance, see my signature line) to not rate this period as a down.

Plus, I'm about to have an interesting and probably rather prolonged discussion with Keke on another thread. Enjoy!

no way to be bored of such a great game
don't forget you're on your way to win in our game
isn't that exciting enough

All my Soviet tanks are down to 1 tread each.....They're doing donuts on the outskirts of Stalingrad...How do you figure I'm on my way to a victory?

I feel many people of the TOAW community left ACG/SZO mostly the foreigners, but many US people who were very good keeping the community together.
Most of them doesnot forget playing TOAW, but temporary they play e.g. Total War.

Many people still design new TOAW games (e.g. I will make something) so the game definitely not dying...

Maybe we can make an offtopic section UNDER the TOAW section so many people can come back for a free chat...

I am sure everyone is simply too busy plotting and scheming to destroy their opponents to post on a regular basis

or perhaps we all put off RL too long and it came and bit us in the arse :D

I am liking some of the comments, but I do not believe the problem is in the TOAW games & scenarios being built (& thanks to all game designers out there), but in the interest of this web message board (or blogg) and the lack of interest in tournaments as the last tournament game I played (in what was WarfareHQ) was now quite some time ago and was never quite completed.

Tournament play was rampant in years past (ohh, the good ol' days) and this had brought the interest from newbies & pros alike. The message board was full of some of the most interesting questions & announcements.

I do not mean to step on the Euro-vs-American tournament, as I believe the format is good & does contribute to the comunity, but I believe that waiting & waiting month after month for new & fast paced tournaments on this site has now become the norm.

...and once again has me questioning as to why.

Ahh yes, I remember the good old days. My favorite tournament of all time was the Sands of North Africa where I got to lead my elite team of Panzertruppen as the team leader against those pesky Americans and British devils (led by my Arch Nemesis Jamiam!). I think we somehow squeaked a victory out of it too. :cheeky:

The key to tournaments is having scenarios that are short and small so that everyone can cut through them in a timely fashion. Larger scenarios inevitably lead to delays and an inverse amount of enthusiasm the longer the tournament goes on.

I do agree that we should have a tournament or two going on at all times.

Well, in war, the old hands are casualties, so also here it seems. New recruits fill up the ranks, but the recruiting base diminuishes... It's all the signs of a losing war! And it's summer too...

I don't think the many changes to the forum are helpful either. Maybe Laszlo has a point in having an off topic section here too...

I think it'll pick up again; as was noted above, it is summer and folks are taking their required vacations. (I just returned from a 3 thousand mile road trip- pulling a 26" travel trailer through the Rockies and the Pacific coast). Funny thing, I check here to see what's going on and the first thing I see is my main game opponent is gone for three weeks on vacation! I have had a turn ready for five days, but no way to send it.
In any event, I will most likely be playing TOAW for years to come.

Regardless of people who have vacations planned, a site like this should ALWAYS have a tournament going at ALL times with:

...Short small scenarios
...time limits
...points for entering/completing tournament (regardless of Victory/Loss level)
...matchings of veterans with newbies/rookies
...invitations for all to join (including guest that may be thinking on joining the ladder)

As well, a new tournament should be in the planning & implimented before the privious one ends.

A player who might be "gone/vacationing" should have the knowledge of whether he will be able to complete the tournament in time should there be a clear time limit on when rounds/tournament will be completed.

As it is now, nothing much is going on... :bored:

Has it ever occured to you that there may not be enough active TOAW-players for these continous tournaments?

If there actually is, feel free to start them.

he's already organising a lot of tournaments at the blitzkrieg ladder
i can tell those tournaments have met good success, and the format of those is always interesting, i'm looking for next round in the north africa tournament

Over 50 people joined the last tournament back in 2004....My guess is that there would easily be enough players...Meanwhile I don't doubt that there could be a few new players who have joined the community since 2004 that would like very much to meet new (& veteran) players on a tournament level.

As for feeling free to start "them", it is not my job to start "them"...It is though, ALL our job in requesting "them" if we want "them" and anyone should feel free in requesting "them".

CyberGeneral, sorry about my *****ing. Maybe the Blitz already fullfils the need for tournaments.

Edit: It wasn't *****ing actually.

I have always looked to this site as the place to find the best players interested in TOAW as I am myself. There is no doubt that that are more people involved here than at the Blitz but I prefer to be a part of both as I have been since 2002 & I'm not the only one that places in both sites.

The Blitz always fulfills tournament needs for the Blitz regulars. But without on-going tournaments here at this site, how can there be interest enough here to keep veterans activly involved while getting new players interested in joining in. I have been looking in on the message board for months since the last tournament that ended on a sour note, waiting for the announcement of something new. A new tournament has always paired me with new players with different & unique styles of play. As well, some of the people that I had played in tournaments with, I have been able to count on from time to time to get in another game outside of tournament play.

This site is too good of a wargame community to be sitting dormant.

well some of the staff members seem to be away for a while. i have no news from mantis since two weeks or so.
westpointer seems to be around.
isn't jean luc in holidays atm?
and anyway i think it might be a good idea to wait for september to go back to tournament because in summer some have better things to do than playing toaw. Like where i live it's so rare when you have good weather here, we take advantage of this by going out playing football

Actually, turns out we already introduced it there the last time we occupied the country, but that it was banned by the Taliban. Making a comeback now:

As this blogg has been resurrected from the dead yet again....

I did want to say that it has been put to me that if someone is bored, then they are boring...

So, I should find a way not to be bored (or boring)...

I am now only checking in on the new & improved Strategy Zone Online website once a week instead of once daily as I had in the past...

It is now working...

I am better.....

Good- me too.

Hey C.G.

We still have a scheduled game of Braunschweig which I’m looking forward to. I’ve been holding out in hope of getting an updated version of the scenario for our re-match. With some unexpected things in a new scenario we will both have our boredom swept away (right through the Volga delta).
If we get info that the updated scenario is over 6 months out, then we can use the existing one-say starting in mid September?

Dicke Bertha

Beware of 11. Armee option, the German going for Rasmus' style southern headshot. It took only 20+ turns for me to surrender, Stalingrad lost and huge numbers of surrendered armies, Volga penetrated at will, Machachala (never mind the spelling) lost early and Baku/Caspian wide open for a Panzerarmee to take despite heroic defenses by odd divsions and AA Bns... If 11. Armee is activated, there is only one recipe (remedy effect unknown) and that is to abandon the entire Black Sea coast and the mountains and Tbilisi too, and make one huge fortress down at Baku, and hope for a quick winter, and any reinforcements in the north - don't counterattack, rail them directly south... Or, take a chance at defending Grozny/Terek bend with the odd AA Bns and rifle corps and hope for a miracle... :)

On this rematch I will have the Axis, but as agreed, the 11th army option is forbidden. I would like to keep the GD dv and the LSAH dv;-I think that’s all I need for an OV. If I can reach Makhachkala by the 1st week of September victory is assured. Of course I may change the great plan on a whim… :whist: :devious:
