STRIKING THE BALANCE
The losses of the British Navy
"Whoever rules the seas rules the trade of the world and the riches of the world, that is the world itself".
In logical application of this principle, little by little Britain destroyed all the great seapowers in the world, the Spaniards, the Portugese, the Dutch, the French and the smaller powers too as the "confiscation" of the Danish fleet in 1807 proves.
Since Nelson's victory over the combined French and Spanish squadrons in 1805 British domination at sea has been uncontested. Even the first World War 1914-1918 dealt it no decisive blow. With the exception of the Baltic and other parts of the North Sea and the Adriatic the Union Jack and the flags of her allies continued to rule the waves even though submarines and merchant warfare caused the British Supreme Command much anxiety.
In 1940 however, the position was radically changed after the defeat of France when Germany won the Atlantic coast from the North Cape to the Bay of Biscay and when Italy entered the war. The ever-increasing activity of the German Navy and Air Force stationed in the newly won bases puts Britain in a very serious position. The losses suffered by the Navy and the mercantile marine are on the increase and the island finds itself facing a mortal danger.

The Race. According to British admissions, twice as many British warships are sunk as can be replaced by new launchings. The illustration in whcih the original number of warships is marked in black and the new launchings red shows the unavoidable and constant decrease of the British Navy during this race between ships sunk and launched.
This war has already proved to be the most difficult in memory for the British Navy, and a situation which is unsustainable. Defeat of Britain is inevitable.
