View Full Version : Newbie?Underachiever Tournament - RD. Two
We are finally ready to go. All scores are in from the first round.
I have attached the results so far in an axell file.
In this round players will be playing Still Full of Fight. 14 turns.
A very even scenario in results in the past. The matchups will be:
Allies listed first.
John Given vs Abitis
Gnrl Confusion vs Michammer
Paulinski vs Ensayne
Jefferylau vs Spartan
Full Monty vs Jesdazone
Please post a message on this thread when you have started so we know when everyone is underway.
The deadline to finish this round will be July 25. If everyone finishes early, then we can start the next round earlier.
Good luck to everyone.

If there is no way around this problem I will have to withdraw from the tourney.
Hold on and lets see if there's a way around this. I didn't realize this scenario wasn't stock. And I can't understand why it won't work if you have all the files.
I have attached the files you will need here, try putting these in your WF folder, and let me know how it goes.

Thanks for the files, but it gave exactly the same result. I then have to close WF using ctrl+alt+del and it leaves everything coloured green and khaki, necessitating a reboot. Unless anyone has a sure fire way of overcoming this I'd rather not 'experiment' too much more. :nervous:
OK....since we have a problem with scenarios, we are going to start round two over. I was not aware that some scenarios will not work on some peoples machines. I will stick to basic WF scenarios for the remainder of the tournament, unless I find a nice after market design that I am assured will work with all the versions of WF. Sorry about this hiccup....but I think this is the best way to handle it.
The new scenario to play for round two is: "Kidney Ridge" 11 turns. Keep the matchups the same, and our new finish date will be July 29th.
Good luck to all. Any questions...please don't hesitate to ask.

Abatis - let's keep playing 'Still Full of Fight.' Even though I'm flirting with a minor defeat for me, it's a very fun scenario and very suspenseful. If I can somehow grab an obj. hex or two I might just have a draw on my hands.
I think we should also report it on the ladder afterward Brian. When a game is reported, both players actually benefit. (one just benefits MORE, lol) Plus, we are halfway though and I don't want to quit - I want my hard work (of losing my own tanks!!??) to account for something.
Awaiting the turn Brian.

Well I came home Thursday night after one of the worst days at work in 10 years and having been screamed at by at least 50 clients (no exageration) all day long. I then compounded my misery by getting home late and playing mine and Michammer's tourny round when, by rights, I should have just gone to bed. 2 minutes into turn 3 I was 100 points in the hole after being up by a slim margin. Now I learn we're starting over.

I've emailed my opponent after thinking about this. In fairness, I've suggested to keep playing so he can at least try for a major victory ladder entry. If he doesn't want to, then I'll concede him a minor for the ladder and we can just play the new one. I think that's fair as I'm still deluding myself that I have a chance.
What I don't get, though, is I never got the expansion CD. I did download some scenarios off the Blitz's FTP site several years ago, but I'm not sure if that was one of them.

Well I'm still in the fight in "Still in the Fight", not that it counts; with exactly 28 points needed to reach draw. It doesn't look good, but my exasperated opponent is beginning to grumble at my tanks ability to seemingly tread water.
As for the "Full Monty" scenario (lovingly named), still too close to call. Michammer's forces are closing in on the "island" and preparing to assault. We don't have the heart to tell them their flies are down, but then, maybe they know that, which would account for their broad smiles. His tanks to the south have been repulsed for now. Not sure if they'll give our Sherman's another try, but for now they've been wumped. Tenous allied minor victory; forgot to look what round. Must be the heat. Or the broad smiles.
We're still going in both of these, not sure what turn, though. Somewhere in the middle. We are quite confident of victory.
We are idiots.
Full Monty bless us, every one.

Abatis and I are up to turn 8; he has launched a brilliant two-pronged encircling pincer attack whereupon a huge mass of tanks commands the southern portion of the map, and the long-ranged pzIV's and a few pzII's have taken the northern pincer. The 88's remain on a hilltop, ready to shred any sherms that dare poke their turrets above the crest of the ridge.
The objective area is still firmly held by me though, and in fact, the point spread hints at a minor victory for me. Again, the culprit is time, not tactics. It has taken so long for Abatis to mount this gigantic encirclement that I'm beginning to wonder what his plans are - he might have a chance if he rushes the 'island,' but he seems more fixated on my shermans (he's killed 4 already, and hungers for more).
Perhaps his grand plan is to 'scare' the shermans - to get them to move so far away, for protection, that they cannot support the objective area?
The irony hasn't been lost on me that he was apparently winning 'Still Full of Fight,' but now seems to be *losing* this scenario, heh. I'd better be careful though - Abatis is a damn good tactician and might surprise me yet.
Later all! :)
P.S. my opinion on the new ladder - seems too convoluted for me to tell if it's balanced. If the math-whizzes who put it together say it's balanced, that's good enough for me. I like the idea of different games being on seperate ladders though.

You give me too much credit John, but it's still nice to hear  )
My new tack in the game is really just a reaction to your 6 pounders picking apart my armor, and your riflemen making meat out of my Italians early on. I'm playing this same scenario in the Blitz Rookie tourney- as the Axis again, and it is very different. By trn 3 I was in the trenchworks with infantry and armor. I got kicked out, but clawed my way back in next turn and kicked out again on the subsequent turn. Think we are on 5 or 6 now....its going on and on, the in the face assaults and close fire.!
Our game here is more about manuever it seems...tried head on with you earlier- had to break it off! Too expensive. Had to try something different-might be able to get more points killing Sherms than taking ground...of course I'll try to do both if the chance presents itself. Clock is killing me though. I think a draw is the best I can do, and defeat is the most likely occurence. Aw well! :p

We are down to our last turns on both of these. We just want to say, for the record, that we're not going to clean up afterwards.

Yes he has contacted me. And he can't seem to get his disc to work. So you will receive a major victory for this round. But that leaves us one man short. Anybody out there that qualifies want to take his spot? I have emailed one interested party. News to follow.
Please...everyone should make a copy of all their game discs...especially CS games as they are getting rare. I never use my original discs to play. I have worn out one copy of EF already. It doesn't take much to ruin a disc. If you need help burning a copy, I'm sure we can work that out also.

I am still using my orig. CS disks, which I know I shouldn't. I have CD burner (or should I say CS burner?) but I have never used it. I hear they are really easy to use.
Questions;
1. Will any store-bought blank CD automatically have enough room to store any and all data copied from a CS CD?
2. Is any type of CD ok? I noticed some are marked 'audio' CD's, others are marked 'photo.' The ones I have in a drawer here I notice, are marked 'photo.' ??
3. Is there software on the CD that will try to stop me from doing the copying? On many newer games, I hear it's almost impossible to burn new copies due to software protection included on the disk.
By the way Abatis, your question about that EF II disk (from your recent e-mail) - I need to see what's on it first. I'll let you know something after I've received it. (it's from Pip Roberts at the other CS forum)
That's all for now! :smoke:

Photo is fine I suppose. You just want a data disc. Even the audio ones will work, they are made for cd recorders that hook up to your stereo system. A little more expensive.
3. Is there software on the CD that will try to stop me from doing the copying? On many newer games, I hear it's almost impossible to burn new copies due to software protection included on the disk I think the CS discs are protection free, but Nero will burn it anyways even if it does. You can download a copy of Nero for free if you want. It is perfectrly legal to make copies of your games for personal use to keep your originals safe.

Ray, thank you for that info! I'll have to get set ta burnin' shortly. Gratz.
Ok, the results of the Kidney Ridge battle are in for Abatis and myself. And the winner is - nobody! It is a complete draw. For much of the game, I teetered between minor and major victory. Then, in each of the last two turns, Abatis captured multiple strong (but dispersed) platoons of riflemen in the fort, destroying them utterly. (total of 39 sp's of British infantry destroyed, the vast majority of it lost in just two decisive overrun attacks)
Final score: 24 points. 0 to 39 points is a 'draw' result.
Hmm, to think just 3 turns ago I had him down to -90 points. Oh, frustration. :p
I will post the results of the game to the ladder tonight Ray.
And once again Abatis/Brian, great game! You're a sneaky one, you are. ;)

Jeffrey wait, I'm pretty sure this will work. Copy the West front files that are on your hard drive to a CD. Just make sure your CD is named WFCB. WF launches from your hardrive. It just checks to make sure the game CD (theoretically purchased) is there. At least try it. Also, try cleaning your original CD with soap and water and gently dry it from the inside to the outside.

Cleaning the CD is probably the first thing to try and then see if it will copy - ideally on a different machine to the one you're using for gaming (a different drive with a different laser may well 'see' the disc more clearly if cleaning doesn't cure the problem). If that hasn't given you a useable disc then try GC's suggestion.
Good Luck!

What, exactly, is happening? If it bombs during the install, it just might be a software conflict, in which case try starting your computer in safe mode and then try to install. If it won't run the CD at all I'd still try the safe mode route, however, it might have something to do with the autostart. Some people used to turn that off to prevent virus installs. Not too common anymore though.

Ray, et al,
Ensayne has had a major computer "event" and is about to reinstall an operating system. He'll probably be down for a day or two. So far all I know is his address book is unrecoverable, so if any of you have played him and have email addresses not on this site, email him again so he can start adding you to his book when he's back up.
By the way, it wasn't virus related, so don't worry that he might have infected you. Unless you've started laughing at his jokes.

My game with Gnrl Confusion has ended in a Major Victory (by 4 Pts!) for the allies (GC). Every time I tried to advance, my tanks/infantry were either disrupted or suffered an SP loss, so I got nowhere near the objectives. I tried to outflank GC to the south, but he had 4 pltns of "uber shermans" waiting for me. Their shells were punching through the armor (aluminium foil) of my PzIIIs, which in return could not even scratch his paint work. Unfortunately, my Marders were not released until turn 7 or 8, so did not play a big part in the assault. By the time I had moved them into position, the game was over.
We have also completed "Still Full of Fight", which ended in a draw.

Back to the turney. My armies meet crashing defeat at the hands of Ensayne. We played both scenarios and the results were the same.
Still Full of Fight I hoped for a draw but got burned when his troops captured my heavy tanks.
On the second scenario the sheer number of his panzers demolished my units. I was able to wrestle the 50pt objective leaving him with one objective hex but my losses added up quickly. My AT guns were miserable and he was able to put them out of action in a first few turns.
Great opponent and skillful commander.
Paul
Actually, skill had little to do with it. I sacrificed 3 goats to Full Monty before the battle, which seems to have made the difference. The neighbors were furious. (What was I supposed to do? I didn't have any goats.)
We kept our distance for the first 2 or 3 turns, concentrating fire on his mortar and AT guns whenever they appeared and moving the armor to his north and south in the same kind of pincer move that others seem to have used. The assault guns were very useful for taking out AT guns and for disrupting his troops. I had a few tanks on or over the ridge in the south when his reinforcements came in. We had one brief tank exchange after that and I realized his armor had better range and firepower than mine. So we pulled out back over the ridge and out of sight of his armor and concentrated on the objectives - saving enough firepower to take on his tanks at close range if they came over the ridge. Eventually, he had to try that and we had a more favorable exchange due to the sheer numbers of axis tanks. A narrow major against a very worthy opponent - and a lot of fun!
It just unable to read disc ...so I believe it is the CD that has gone bad ..
Did you try resurfacing the disk? A lot of stores sell a device called Skip Doctor that can be used to repair a disk that has been made illegible by scratches. Basically, it grinds and resurfaces the disk so it's free of scratches. Then you repolish the surface with a cloth that comes with the device. The data area, which is below the surface, is not damaged. This has worked a couple of times for me with CDs I thought I was going to have to toss.

I successfully burned backup copies of WF and EF2 using Nero, although I was using the full version, not just a bundled copy (might make a difference, I don't know :) ).
@Ensayne Please ensure that the next time you sacrifice goats to me that they are under 4 years old and preferably female. That last lot were a bit old and the meat was too tough for such an ancient being as I.
I wondered what that lightning bolt was for - it just missed, taking out a nonbeliever sitting on my right.
I'll ask the neighbors if they wouldn't mind having the common decency to get a better grade of goat. I think they've run out of ammo, so they may be willing to talk now.

Are you trying to copy the original, or the new disc you made from the hard drive files?
If it is the original disc, then the "Irrecoverable Read Error." may mean you have a faulty disc. You may want to clean it or run it through a skip doctor also. I find the unit that my local movie rental store has is a pretty good machine for cleaning discs. maybe you can find a shop that will clean a few of your discs for you. Barring that..they are still available for purchase around the net as the World at War set.

My EFII disk is real old and copy protected (basically they put one bad block on it; when trying to copy it you'll get a read error). I also have the Gold Edition CDs which are not copy protected, don't ask me why. A program called Alcohol 120% will make copies of copy protected CDs and DVDs, not that I'm advocating it, but I believe we should all be able to make at least one backup of purchased CDs.
As far as the CD from game files on your hard drive, I still think it's doable, but it might need the autostarts, which of course wouldn't have been installed. (I'm still guessing though).
Alcohol 120% has a trial download: http://www.alcohol-software.com/

monty not only decimated my AT guns but his Italian infantry started hurling bottles of a great vintage of wine to the troops dug in and waiting needless to say they lost all semblance of decorum and shed ther clothes and started screaming fro sophia loren for some ungodly reason (to much tv me thinks and it hasnt even been invented yet. Oh well will try to survive to just get a draw woudl be satisfactory i think.

With one turn left I've managed to drive my armour into the British position. Whether they'll be able to fend of an infantry counter-attack is open to question. Hopefully, all will be over tonight!
Give us your score when you're all set men. I will come up with the info for the third round shortly.

Final Score for us was:
-54 Axis Major Defeat
Michammer was axis, General Confusion allies.
Do you need axis/allies total point loss or anything? I take a screen shot of the final score to keep track.
No final score is not needed. Just the outcome(major win, draw, ect, ect).
It would be nice to get the one final outcome though, so we can get started on the next round.

My poor poor poor Shermans..................
Well the Italians did it again a replay of the 1834 world cup soccer championships the Axis powert won a major victory against the Brits, so much for the superiority of the Sherman expecially when outnumbered so heavily ................. but tis my fat ein life to always be outnumbered and always dug in with no place to retreat to, damn this sounds like my job with the govt here.
congrats to full monty on your win a well fought battle but next tiem dont break the code and give yourself a regiment of panthers and two battalions of king tigers yeshhhhhhhhhhhh.

Axis Major Victory (182 pts)
Despite a brave fightback in the last turn denying my panzers the 50pt victory hex, Jesdazones Brits had suffered grievous losses and were unable to make much of an impact on the final result.
I have to say I was reading about this particular battle in Jon Latimer's 'Alamein' which influenced my strategy somewhat. I decided that, as much as possible, I would concentrate on reducing Allied AT capability before launching an assault on Snipe. With a little good fortune it worked leaving me able to close up on the position with only a minor risk to my armour.
OK...see the new thread for the third round.
