I figure this should be good for a few laughs. Mine are in no particular order.
I always see single guys take off in APC's from base, while 5 or 6 guys are chasing behind it. Seldom does it stop for pickups at that point.
I've seen an allied engineer lay a ring of mines around a flag pole - while I was in an APC right next to the pole getting a flag capture. Forced me to get out of a perfectly good ride.
I've seen drivers of fully loaded APC's take the vehicle smack into the middle of an enemy base just crawling with AT guys - getting everyone killed in the process when it would have been just as easy to drop everyone just outside the base.
I constantly see CO's drop artillery on our own bases.
I've seen a squad form up of all AT guys...making the squad trash against other soldiers at close range.
I've seen AFV's of all sorts fly off cliffs to avoid getting shot. :)

Childish humor, but it is still funny. I agree with almost everything you said Brian. Being artilleried by your own stupid commander really frosts me...

THats a great article...and it never fails either. I like to ride the dune buggy to a strategic location outside an enemy base to provide cover fire for advancing troops. This means I get out of the drivers seat, then man the MG on top. Often, some loser will walk up, jump in the vehicle and drive it into the base to be attacked from all sides and die. Needless to say I've learned to jump out of that trainwreck before it happens now!

...Well... the helo crash-landed as well - right on one of my mines...
:surprise:
Well, a stupid thing that I did was try and fly a helicopter on my first try at the demo. My entire team got into the helicopter and I promptly proceeded to crash it a few seconds after takeoff........
Someone jumping in the landing craft in omaha beach then not driving it anywhere. Wiht a full squad in the rear.
I hate it when you are in a vehicle, being arty'd, and just when you think you are about to escape it one lands a direct hit on you for an instant kill :(
That happened today...I was so excited that I escaped the downpour of artillery, and then I was cooked.

Strange but comforting how these genre of games have similar goofy things happen... :)
Well, my favorite moment of today was when I stopped my APC because I saw mines (planted by my team, so they were VERY obvious with the red skull above them), I jumped out to make sure they were mines and not C4 that I could drive over, I stopped to tell Heat behind me what was on the road, and a guy jumps into my APC and drives straight into the first mine. I said it was exactly what he deserved for stealing my vehicle.

Lol...so typical. Lots of funny moments with C4 and mines...I might actually try spec ops next time just for some C4 action :D.

I absolutely love setting traps with C4, I got so many vehicles that way when we were holding that one cap point (the one Heat never got to leave all map). It does get annoying when you pick a major path, set up the C4 and then no one comes by...

Yeah, that was pretty great when HEAT (and to a lesser extent I think you and myself) defended that one base...almost reminds me of the demo and some hectic defenses there. At a little 2v2 local LAN party with the demo on the 16 player map, I got multiple kills against tanks with the C4...
I just can't bring myself to use more Spec-Ops because I hate not being able to heal myself and teammates...its just so handy. Of course when a tank or any armor comes I'm useless to stop it...

Yeah, Spec-Ops is basically my default class, it's the best balance I think between anti-tank abilities and anti-infantry abilites. Plus, the ability to lay traps with the C4 is just too fun.
If I'm going to be up against a lot of armor, I'll go to anti-tank but otherwise Spec-Ops all the way. For some reason, I just can't get into being a medic, I just don't like the lack of firepower.

I've adapted to city fighting by going with Spec Ops on those maps. The C4 is handy when fighting in alley's and in close quarters and the biggest advantage is having a gun that can knock people down from more than 5 feet away. The AT guys get a SMG which is worthless when trying to hit a guy on the next rooftop, much less two streets over.
It is amazing how bad some players are at this game - it is like they never learn LOL. I wish EA would put keys and locks on vehicles so you could move your dune buggy where you want it, then hold the keys so no one can drive you away just while you are in the middle of shooting intruders!
Oh, and I got caught in a stupid act while driving my tank in the city. In the middle of a huge firefight I desperately needed to reverse down a street - but it had one of those wooden saw horses blocking it. Turns out you can knock those down BUT you need to have momentum to do it. :( Since i was essentially stopped, my attempts to reverse over it resulted in my tank bouncing off the blasted thing...and leaving me exposed at the worst possible time.

One danger of just jumping onto a server (even ranked) is that there could be a lot of inter-personal problems between players that aren't apparent right away.
I jumped into a game, found a squad, and we all boarded a helo to get dropped off somewhere downrange. Well, it turns out one of my squad mates had done something to piss off a pilot of one of our fighter jets. I did notice the two guys saying things to each other...but I thought nothing of it until I was sitting behind my minigun looking for enemy targets when I notice a plane zero in on us...and move closer...then move directly at us! But this was an allied plane... Turns out, it was the fighter pilot who was pissed at the other guy...and he took out his anger on this guy by ramming our helo, killing 6 of us, plus himself. Scratch one squad...and scratch that server!

This one is a classic.
I was driving some guys around in a jeep and turned a corner and one of our team mates was standing smack in the middle of the road. I tried to brake (wish they had a sound for squealing tyres!), but at the last second I glanced the guy and killed him.
One of my passengers gets out of my rig, walks around the vehicle to my window, and proceeds to unload his clip into me.
When I told him he was absolutely the most idiotic person I've enountered in BF2, he said that was payback for killing his squad mate.
*smacks forehead*
Unbelievable people out there.

Heh I never played BF2 but I played the others in the series. It seems that things haven't changed from the days of BF1942. The games where quite fun with the right people but common sense is not a common virtue on the virtual battlefield.

I just don't see how the game could be fun for those clueless folks. Honestly, where is the fun in running around in circles, falling under tank treads on purpose, and generally getting in the way of the real players? Don't these people have chores or something more important to do?
I've seen some shady tactics going on too...like groups of guys killing each other over and over (it just keeps repeating on the screen, although I didn't actually see them in the game). I suspect that 4 people join 2 sides, then go off somewhere in the bushes and use the knife to kill one guy, while the other guy revives him. With 4 guys you could rack up quite a lot of kills for all 4 players...and this would almost certainly give the medal for knife combat.
That just sickened me last night.

Well some people(particularly teenagers) get a kick out of griefing. Their whole purpose in life is ruining the fun for everyone else. They get a rise out of being a total *******. The anonimity the internet provides makes people much more apt to act rashly then they would in real life. The repercussions of their actions are so much less harsh than it would be if they were face to face with another human being.
If someone were to act that moronicly in a group of people. They would be much more likely to get a good thumping or two.

I'll admit it, I love stats, from back in my CS days, I always wanted great stats, but I never got the point in artificially boosting them, or in this case, artificially gaining awards. Is it so they can look at your stat screen and say, "ROFL 1 pwn 4ll!!!11one11eleven111 LMAO 1 ch34t 4 st4ts" (that is invariably how these people speak afterall), because I'd much rather gain all the awards actually earning them..

Heat... Great article! Love some of the points you made. I am looking for intelligent players to get with to play on a daily or every other day occurrence. Let me know if you found a good ranked server with some others that are into the same. I'll be happy to join up if the servers are under 150 ping for me.

Not being able to dive bomb in BF1942. The bomb hits the tail and you explode with your tail gunner, getting -4 points. Woohoo.
Edit: In the old Market Garden, only the allies have planes. Once I saw a German steal a plane only to fly straight into a hill right after takeoff. Even in the updated version, the German team still act like idiots and try to steal P51's I noticed this and camped a tank to cover three entrances, with the fourth one being behind me!The German team kept trying just one entrance, and eventually I just covered that one. Soon, others on my team joined in! And that's how the Germans lost. It was all casualties!

Lol, call of duty is the same, one time my team in Bocage took like 15+ casualties attacking an mg 42 that had an obvious and easy flanking spot right next to it
Well, here is a stupid thing I'VE done -
Lost the CD-key. And only realizing this after uninstalling the game. :(

Small problem I've been having with that. In the last week I've earned the Basic Resupply and Support Combat award three and two times respectively.
Not a sausage to show for it on my stats though.
I've lost a mess of hard-won points too, which is annoying cause I want a PKM dammit!

Had a classic on DC CTF once, when I had laid a field of mines in the Berlin map to stop the allies racing stright to Opposition flag. One of our vehicles creeped up and stopped behind me, so I warned him there were mines there, and stood infront of the vehicle to highlight the fact that he shouldn't go forward. Then he ran me over, hit a mine and killed everyone in the vehicle... I lost 6 points for TKs of him and everyone in the vehicle, and the guy was then saying they should kick me for being a TKer!!

I did enjoy playing in the same game as Curt the other day...and it reminded me of one other stupid thing I've seen.
Don't you hate it (Curt) when you sit down into the Commander's chair for the first time at the start of a match, and then see the immediate call for your mutiny? Worse yet, you then have the rebel player sit there and yell at you for the entire game - while the world falls apart around him. That was just classic anti-teamwork!

I have heard this complaint from many players. Here is the SIT REP I am a SAW gunner giving suppressing fire, I get up to move to the right flank of a base and not more than 10 feet in front of me running at me is an enemy sniper, by the time he stops he is maybe 5 feet away, i pull the trigger of my SAW unleashing 10-15 rounds point blank and the guy doesn't fall :surprise: :nervous:
I have to fire another burst of 5-10 rounds to kill this clown
In a real world situation that guy was swiss cheese, so far I like Call of Duty online better.
I am still learning this game and I am getting better, just frustrated.

Well, I'm sure someone else getting the nod as commander because of rank probably pee'd in this fanboy's whaeties, but the same thing happens to me everyday. I should have resigned as commander, then let all of the lone wolves ruin HIS commander record!
That was commonly known as a "head-shaker"!
The perfect time to relieve a commander is BEFORE all of the flags are lost and when you are down by one-third the total points. At that point it is still very easy to come back and win IF the bulk of your team gets into squads and at least attempts to accomplish the goals you set for them.

I too find the SAW a bit odd. I don't think I have ever killed anything with it. It just sprays bullets, but none hit home. In real life the SAW is meant as a suppression weapon, but in the game suppression has very little effect. But, as in real life, if I take the time to aim a few of the bullets in that burst should hit.:blab:

Weird, I've been making some nice 50-70 yard kills with the damn thing, plus some real long range 'guesstimated long burst hits" Problem with those is they tend to attract attention....
Close up through a choke point the SAW is a mincer though. Defending the first platform in Karkand can be fun when the enemy try and mob you up the stairs. Unless they toss frags up first of course :)

I've been using the SAW (and other country replacements) for it a bit more now, and I'm really not having too much trouble with it. Now and then I'll get the occasional situation where I lay bursts down on a guy that should kill him and he shoots twice to kill me, but there's been plenty of spots where I've actually beaten the M4 or similiar at mid range.
Thought this might be appropriate.
Apparently it's just me lacking in the 1337 5k111z department as several other people I have mentioned my problems to about the SAW have also said things like "I've got tons of kills with the SAW" "It's my weapon of choice" "Dude, learn how to shoot". Oh well I guess I am just another 1@mm3rz D00d. :rifle:

Yeah seen that as well a couple of times. But somehow I feel a sorry for the guy who had planted the mines as he nearly always will be punihsed.

Hello Siberian. Those are some revealing anecdotes. My neighbour has the games and plays them frequently. He now has a system that runs two video cards on one Gigabyte motherboard with a 3GHz Pentium processor running on 2 Gigs of RAM.
The change from his other super duper comp is that noticeable. It was like going from my P2 to a 2.6 GHz Celeron. Yet, I have never seen a computer as fast as his.
The irony is that although this puppy mashes 20 min install programs to mere seconds to minutes he still has to put up with as you mention in your posts the learning curve that suicidal aliases engage in.
Alas, my game is just the Geriatrically paced Steel Panthers, where the 'Real Life' Kamkazi's don't really get to do much except as you mentioned:
Call in arty on their own to mash an unwary but numerous Communist opponent ..
Charge in trucks or halftracks to cause MBT crewmen to bail out to their own slaughter ..
But worst of all, is the 'AI'. Humanity has nothing to worry about possible artificially intelligent machines. They are even worse behaved then their human creators.
Nice to know that wargames mimic life or that life mimics wars.
Have fun.

for sure, taking empty vehicles with people around is very upsetting. i think having friendly arty dropped on you is bad, but as a commander, seeing your team move to where arty is already been called on and getting a ton of tk's from it is also upsetting.

the light machineguns can drive a man to pre-mature baldness for sure. i really like the support class, in paticular the saw and rpk. my favorite tactic is to find a decent spot with some cover with a good few, and just pick of the enemy making their way to a flag. shorts bursts are the key, and i mean very short.
my problem with the machineguns is exactly what happened to you. run into an enemy at close rang, unload at full auto, only to be killed by one shot.
or, you're running around, see an enemy, go prone to shoot them, only to see them go prone and kill you from one burst after you've sent 3-4 bursts in their direction.
honestly, the spread is just to big for the light machineguns, specially at close range. no one's afraid of them because of the horrible accuracy they have. even thou if you check the weapon stats in the bfhq, they are suppose to have medium accuracy, sure they do.
In bf 1942 desert combat I've tried to sneak up on an enemy base to capture a flag using the boats, only to have my gunner open fire on passing aircraft. Then getting nailed by enemy CAS.
