hi all. new to this forum, and new to TOAWII. bought it used last week and am REALLY excited about this game's potential. steep learning curve, but i am dying to get to know this game. wonder if you old hands could help me with a couple of things....

i am running the game with windowsXP pro.

1) can't seem to restart saved games. it keeps telling me "this version of TOAW can't load selected scenario". it REALLY pissed me off when i had a really neat fulda gap game going and lost it when i couldnt reload it.

2) how do i slow down the comp. player's moves?

3) is there a site you guys recommend (other than this forum) for strategy help?

thanks in advance,

"the new guy"

Welcome!

1) Did you save it with an SAV or SAL extension and can you see it in the Saves sub-folder of wherever you saved the game? If SAV then use OPART exe, if SAL OPART300 exe for larger game size.

2) I don't think you can slow down the computer's moves, except by clicking on the main map during play which gives you the option to switch sides (or for the computer to switch). It's really a pause as opposed to a slowdown.

3) There's a FAQ page over at the TOAW HQ page: http://www.warfarehq.com/TOAW/TOAWHQFAQ.shtml. Also see http://www.militarygameronline.com/artofwar/strat_guide.asp. A must read. There's also some articles here at http://www.warfarehq.com/Articles/TOAW%20Articles/toaw_articles.shtml and over at TheBlitz.org.

Hope this helps!

Aside from articles available at a few other sites, you'll not find a better place to ask for strategy help than here. This forum is by far the most active TOAW community, and the expertise available here is second to none. (Unless Norm lets you move in with him. But I don't think his wife would like that).

The amount of community support here is amazing. So when something troubles you, or when you get stumped, fire away, someone will be able and happy to assist!

Welcome aboard!

Surprised no one has mentioned this yet, so I'll chime in....

When you think (emphasis intended- I'm learning something new on this site every week) you have a good handle on the nuances of the game and find yourself ready to play versus someone, PBEM style, you'll have much greater success in finding opponents if you can track down a copy of Century of Warfare (ACOW, for short)- it's the most recent version of the game and what probably 99+% of the active PBEMer's have.

Anyhow, welcome aboard, good luck in your battles, and fire away with the questions!

John

thanks for the quick replies guys- i really appreciate the input.

i'm getting the impression after doing some research down further on this forum that my version will be a constant battle with windows XP. i'm thinking i'd best get my hands on a copy of ACOW.

trouble is, i can't seem to find any in any of the stores i've looked in up here in canada. where would be a good spot online to order a copy? could i feel confident that ACOW would work smoothly with XP?

thanks again vets- looking forward to learning this game and maybe trying my hand at some PBEM games down the line!

Although I have a dual boot system, I run CoW flawlessly on XP, and have for a couple years now. Also - Norm has recently released a patch for CoW (1.06) which is mainly a compatability update for XP, as Norm has upgraded his system to this OS, and decided to address issues for stability.

If you feel the game as you've seen it in TOAW II is interesting, you'll not regret getting CoW. It's the standard that 99.9% of us use; it also includes all scenarios from other versions of the game, and is the only version that is compatible with all user made scenarios from all previous versions.

It is still available via mail order from Talonsoft.

One last point, and the most exciting for us hardcore fanatics:

Although these games are 'old' by software standards, WFHQ and certain individuals played no small part in assisting Norm and Take 2 to get back to the table and agree to allow new patch development!

Norm is currently working on a new patch that will add hex-side rivers, he's looking at more events, etc.

i just went and ordered COW from the talonsoft site- can't WAIT until it gets here. i havent been this pumped up for a game in awhile. it definitely looks like the game i've been waiting for.

does anyone remember an old board game called "NATO" that came out in the 80's? i forget the company that put it out, but this game (esp. the WP-NATO scenarios) instantly reminded me of it. its a game i always loved, but a lot of my friends didnt share my love of it because they felt it was a too complex.

so, when i get my copy of COW, will i be able to run it with all the new whistles and bells, or are there patches i need to get? mantis- you mentioned patch 1.06- will i need to get that or will the version i buy have it already?

Hopefully to add to your delight, there are ports of the following boardgames:

NATO:The Next War in Europe (AH)
The Next War (SPI)
NATO Division Commander (SPI)
The Third World War (GDW)

You can get the patch right here (it won't come with it). Go to the TOAW HQ page.
