View Full Version : Your initial thoughts on the demo so far

What do you think so far?
Overall, I think it has a lot of potential, some minor things I don't like, but nothing I didn't expect out of the BF series (something about the actual infantry combat and guns always bothered me about the BF games, probably the inability to effectively kill with them). I think with 12 total maps, another army, and a couple more vehicles for the existing armies it'll be a great game.
OK basic gameplay:
Tanks need to have more torque. The Abrams can barely crawl up small inclines at certian points.
AA Missiles need better tracking, when I have a lock and launch 2 at a helo that is barely moving away and they both miss and he hasn't dropped flares something's wrong. Most of the small arms need their deviation tightened. And for god's sake, they have to fix the nametag problem! Also I wish we could setup mutliple usernames under one login, so everytime I get promoted in my clan I don't have to make a new account.
What I like: AT missiles go where you put them, and the smoke on the vehicles is effective to a point. The physics in the engine are pretty decent. The Helos seem decent enough, although a ton of folks are complaining that they really don't like them.
My biggest concern is the balancing on the maps. I'v read the map reviews and the way it sounds out of 12 maps we may get 2-3 that are fairly balanced. But I know some mappers out there will fix that with their custom releases.
Edit: Of course, when PoE comes out with it's custom armies and maps, I'll probably be happy as a pig in it.
The chief complaint I've heard about Helos is that they're harder to control compared to BF:V. However, from what I can tell, that's good. In BF:V they completely dominated the game and basically could singlehandely control objectives in the map. And even without customizing my controls, I don't have a HUGE amount of problem using them compared to the ones in DC. Heck only the second or third time I tried them I was able to land one on a small building without taking damage.

The squad play is excellent and if you think it doesn't make a difference, try playing on a server where everyone is doing their own thing. Of course having a squad doesn't necessarily mean that your members will do as they are told...and I often find my guys are running off doing their own thing anyway. The best squad leaders have VOIP as they can continually remind their other squad members to keep their eye on the ball so to speak.
I've played as the CO and thought it was pretty cool. You can actually zoom down to see individual enemy soldiers, so it wouldn't be that hard to use VOIP to tell an assaulting squad exactly where to watch out for the enemy (they are hiding in that dumpster right next to you!). Being able to use artillery to rain death from above is another great feature of being CO. A useless CO can really cripple a team too.
The armor is good, and it teaches you the importance of working with infantry to protect your blindspots and keep enemy sappers off of you. Armor is often seen charging in alone into battles...and seldom lasts long. The previously mentioned issue about having trouble getting up slight inclines is true, although we can surmise this was put in so that tanks can't move like dune buggies all over the map. I am slightly bothered by the fact that armor is in essence a big log of cheese, whereby a hit on the front is as effective as a hit on the backside...but perhaps there will be mods that correct this. :D
One good pilot in a fighter bomber can literally control the entire battlefield. Because of the scale and ineffectiveness of the SAMs, one veteran pilot can fly around with impunity dropping bombs on armor and generally disrupting an entire base. If your side can't put up a good pilot to stop him, the battle could get ugly. This is the beauty of this game system too...is that you could literally spend an entire game only flying planes if you preferred flight sims for example. By the same token it shows that if one piece of the rock paper scissors equation is missing on your side, it will be exploited to good effect.
Overall my complaints are few, and mostly mirror what has already been said. I will say the game really shines when you use voice because even a good text-based comm system can't tell you when an enemy is crawling up behind your tank in a timely fashion...nor can it easily explain how to spread out your AFV's to assault a base from 3 sides simultaneously...and so on.
My thoughts are posted in this thread -

Starting at the bottom.....
Mainly, I like it a lot. I agree with most of what has been said here, especially with the comments about teamwork and squads. I love all of the changes they have added - I think the developers made a lot of good improvements to an already great series.

I have to say, if you are the CO and you have a bunch of loser squad leaders - you might as well resign right then and there. I tried to lead an entire side in an engagment only to find that each of my squad leaders wanted to do their own thing. So here I am, assigning orders for everyone to attack X, while they are out defending some worthless real estate out in the bush or riding an M1A2 into oblivion. I managed to stave off the vote of mutiny by picking some juicy artillery targets...but my side lost big time.
I also learned that dropping supplies on artillery will fix them, and that those supply boxes actually act as healing stations and armories which will heal/reload you if you stand next to them. Cool stuff.

I knew it healed troops, but I had no idea it fixed artillery, good to know.
I don't like how it takes two hits from a tanks main gun to take down a helo
I havent played MP yet, does anyone know if you can rope out of helos? I thought this was going to be a part of the game, but I havent seen it mentioned.

You can't "rope" out of helos, but you can jump out and use your parachute if you are higher than a couple feet off the ground. I guess this was an easier solution than creating ropes. That being said, I've only played the demo so the actual game experience may vary (at least that is what it says each time I load the demo!)
It probably isn't in the game. I thought I remembered seeing a screen with people roping from a helo at some point.

has anyone noticed a significant accuracy difference between the m249 and the rpkll ? I cant seem to hit a thing with the m249 yet the rpk11 is accurate as hell.

I haven't played the support classes many times, but the one time I did I remember the M249 being horrid.
Alot of things that were "supposably" in the game aren't acctually in it.

You mean like working ranked servers? And working stats? :whist:
Finally downloaded the demo.
Played in SP mode for ten minutes, found it to be rather lacking in a great many areas.
It's BF-1942 with a facelift, and nothing more. Oh wait, it's the f%$kin' system hog from hell.

Why would you even bother with the SP mode? Since when has that ever been a reason to play a Battlefield game.
To be honest, I never liked BF42 that much, and I did enjoy BF:V for a little while. This game is much, much better than both of those.
Of course, I could swear this game was released by Valve (over Steam) for how many problems they seem to be having.

The only reason I was playin' in SP mode was because my clan was not online at the time. MP play is the sole purpose for the game, however, that does not negate the fact that BF2 is still lacking.
But yeah, I feel ya, and so does the rest of the community. Bugs and gameplay errors are pretty vast.

To be completely honest, when you use all the new teamplay stuff with your clan, I'll be amazed if you don't have an incredibly good experience (and might not say it's exactly lacking anymore).

Well, besides that I don't think they haven't delivered on anything (besides maybe destructable enviroments). With your ranked servers, are you staying for at least one round? I don't think the servers send the stats till after the round, so you need to play a full round to get the stats.

A lot of people have been having the same problem as me, I've played through several maps on one server. And I've waited for long periods of time before checking. It's definitely NOT updating. I think the ranked servers are just completely FUBAR.

I hope its just an early hiccup...this is one of the coolest features of the game for me, they better get it fixed soon (I just had it happen to me, I got a basic first aid medal and it doesn't show in my collection of medals).
