View Full Version : BF2 Server Question
So, since my video card isn't good enough to play the game, I figured I would try to make a server at least. Everything seems to go smoothly in making the dedicated server until I need to choose my IP adress. The only IP adress that I am able to choose from is my local area network IP, which wont work online. However, if I use the LAN IP, my game appears to be running smoothly; I can see what my fps is, how many people are in the game(0), what map it's on, etc BUT my friend can't see it online
However, when I enter in my computer's IP adress and try to make a game, I get none of the "vitals" of the game but me friend can see it (although he is unable to join)
Any ideas why this is happening or how to fix it?

If you have a firewall/router, you probably need to set up a port forward on it so that when you give your external IP address to someone, you also give the port number - and when they enter that info your router will forward the request into your network.
Soemthing like
xx.xx.xx.xx:6435 --> 192.168.1.1
Yah, I do have a router, how do I set up this port forward?

Do you know what model router you have?
I have a Linksys router which sits on my LAN at a certain IP address. It has a web interface which I can access using my browser. Once inside, it has a ton of options I can adjust, one of which is the port forwarding as I mentioned.
It is a bit complicated unless you have a manual in front of you. Hopefully this will get you started though...
Also we had some problems, for the server you need to set sv_internet 1 in the config I believe, otherwise it won't show up.

I think as long as he has a big-name router (linksys, netgear, belkin) it should be fairly easy to setup. What brand is it?
It is a D-Link Wireless Brand Router. I'm connected directly, not wirelessly though.

I think this is the proper guide -

I don't know what ports would need to be opened though :(.
I think I may have found the ports I need open at these forums (http://forums.totalbf2.com/showthread.php?t=5694)
But, of course, the setup is still kinda complicated
Alright, so I found a much easier way that just takes more risks. My computer is currently a DMZ which allows any and all internet things through. Hopefully that'll do it.

:-O...I hope you don't plan to do that long-term :D./
